Summary

In the 1800s American South, Harriet Jacobs is enslaved and tormented by a cruel master. He relentlessly attempts to force her into a sexual union, and, when rebuffed, he separates her from her children and spends a lifetime trying to coerce her and then recapture her when she escapes to freedom. Jacobs outwits her tormentor and eventually reunites with her children, works in the cause of abolition and reform, and helps newly freed slaves with education and aftercare.

In 2012, Timothy Ballard encounters a grieving father in Haiti whose three-year-old son has been kidnapped and sold into slavery, along with thousands of children who were orphaned after an earthquake devastated the country. Inspired by Harriet Jacobs, Tim pledges to track down the missing child and leaves his job at the Department of Homeland Security to establish Operation Underground Railroad. This foundation infiltrates black markets in human trafficking, liberates victims, and provides a comprehensive aftercare process involving justice and rehabilitation for survivors.

Slave Stealers alternates these two riveting stories, weaving them together to expose the persistent evil of trafficking and sexual exploitation that has existed for centuries - and inspiring us to find a way to end it. Filled with heartbreaks and triumphs, miracles and disappointments, hair-raising escapes and daring rescues, this gripping book provides insight into this terrible evil and the good that can be done when caring people step up and stand in the light.

Amazing and eye opening. I'm changed!

I knew it'd be interesting and eye opening but this book affected me more than I'd every imagine.

Wow what a powerful story about a very painful subject

I just finished listening to this book on a long car ride. I have a new appreciation and awareness for the history of slavery. Making it even more powerful, is having Tim retell the stories of bravery in the 1800’s as well as his recent undercover recuses. I hope this book sheds light on these horrific crimes of humanity, so that finally the world will come together as one to stop any form of human trafficking.

Eye opening!

Very enlightening to a major problem in our world today. Just like many in the North hadn't seen slavery, and were thus blinded to it, we blind ourselves today because it isn't in our immediate lives.
Very powerful stories! Loved it!

Learn to see in a new light!

A riveting compilation of true stories from the past merged with stories of the present which have together played a brilliant symphony of good vs evil, dark vs light, which I will not soon forget! It has been a long time since a book has effected me enough to attempt to even write a review - my whole outlook regarding service and light has changed dramatically, and my awareness increased greatly. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone - the only unanswered question left for me is what am I going to do about it?

A Must Read

Thank you Tim Ballard for enlightening your listeners on becoming modern day abolitionist and fighting human trafficking and slavery. We are fortunate to have Operation Underground Railroad and the wonderful men and women who are fighting the good fight. May we all have the courage to become Slave Stealers.

Shocking and inspiring stories!

I love Tim Ballard and all the work he does. Such a beautiful organization that inspires me to do so I can to help in today's slavery. This book had my attention the whole time and I found the accounts of slavery in the 1800's sad and shocking while at the same time full of power and lessons. I love how he mixes both old stories and modern day stories.

I hope many people can read this book and get involved with the O.U.R. team.
