Sooooo gooood!

This is a wonderful novel. I really liked it. It is more than a story of sisters, it is more than a crime story and it is more than a story of love and loss. The story twists and turns and is well written. You can not stop listening because you have to find out what has happened and what IS happening. I also liked the narrator. She read well and had a nice voice.

Disquieting and heartbreaking

I loved this book. It manages to be both a crime mystery and a quietly devastating portrait of grief. There were moments when I was close to tears. And yet the emotions are bound tightly to the plot, and the further in you go, the more uncomfortable events and perceptions become. This effect is helped by a clever, rather than gimmicky, use of its narrative structure. It totally avoids cliche and the writing at times is startlingly beautiful. I struggled with Juanita Mahon's voices of the characters other than the narration, but that's a minor point. The more I have thought about it now I have finished, the richer it has become. It seems a diservice to classify it as `crime' as the quality of writing takes it beyond genre.

Disappointing

This book starts well but promises more than it delivers - overall it's slow paced, dull and has an ending that is easily guessed.

some memorable observations but not stand out

This book was let down by the narrator but I'm not sure this was a great book to start with. It's the first time I've felt rather let down by an audible book and I find it hard to recommend. Perhaps it is because I'd just finished 'The Help' which I thought was brilliantly written and brilliantly narrated and therefore was a hard act to follow, neverthless...

I like great writing but I can equally be hooked by a darn good plot, even if it isn't world class literature. This book does have some truly memorable observations, some that stay with you for a day or two. Sometimes these are about sisterhood, sometimes about grief or something completely random like watching a scary movie. Little diamonds which are book's best feature. So despite what I suspect I will go on to write, I'm glad I read it for these alone.

The casting of the narrator was poor. I don't know how old the main character Beatrice is but I would guess late 30's at the very most. I don't know the narrator either but I'd guess from her voice she was older, in her 50's perhaps. Poor casting got in the way of making this character believable. Then there simply wasn't enough variety in the other character voices. Perhaps it was a lack of recording time but that doesn't forgive an incredibly bad American accent for the character of Tod. However, this is not simply a case of narrator spoiling book. The book for the first 2 1/3rds held attention and I was impressed at how much of the mystery was able to be retained. However, by the last 1/3rd I began to feel manipulated and almost bullied through the plot and when it finally ended, totally exasperated by the way it did end. For obvious reasons, not going to describe.

I take away from this book some really memorable observations but I wouldn't honestly recommend it as a must listen to audible download.

A great listen

Though a little frustrating at first with a slow start, I was soon hooked. The twists and turns of the story took me in all sorts of directions but it wasn't until the last moments of the book that it all fell into place - brilliant. A highly recommended listed.

Drawn out

I didn't enjoy this audio. Narration let a strong story down. I will listen again, but I was just glad to get to the end of this story. A few twists along the way kept me going.

Great story marred by the choice of reader.

Unfortunately I found myself constantly battling to believe that the main character was 26 because the voice if the narrator, although perfectly pleasant, is certainly not that of a 26 year old. I would have put her at 20 years older. It made for quite a confusing listen. I also thought she struggled with the accents if some of the characters too. Some started off sounding wrong and others slipped mid-sentence. It's such a pity.

Riveting

Ms. Lupton was a completely unknown writer to me, but I will be looking for her books in future! I won't tell what the story is about, you can read that in the blurb, but I enjoyed it from first to last. It also had a very surprising twist at the end. The narrator does a perfect job in rendering this story even more unforgettable. A very well earned five-star! Don't miss it!

Brilliant story with many unexpected outcomes

Beatrice is not an easy person to warm to or like (an interesting angle which works well) but by mid book that completely turns around. I loved this story and look forward to more by Rosamund Lupton.

Loved this book

Fantastic book that has kept me spellbound right to the end. Have listened whilst doing the housework and in between looking after the kids and can't recommend thoroughly enough for being to pick up and put down.

Kept me guessing and kept pulling at my heart.

I love it when there's a plot I think I've got all figured out- one where I am just listening to a nicely told tale of things I know will unfold. But this one I couldn't guess at no matter how hard I tried. I was stumped right up until the final chapter, which bothered the control freak in me. And while it's a great mystery, it's also an emotional tale that kept pulling at different places in my heart (I'm a big sister, and a mother). The characters are rich and complicated, no one is completely perfect or completely awful. I kept myself busy with extra chores so I could finish listening to it; my house longs for me to find books like this.

This is a debut novel for Ms. Lupton, and I'm looking forward to the sequel, Afterwards.

It is entirely worth a spent credit.

Sad but insightful story

I ordered this book because I have a sister, a twin, that I adore and because it sounded like an interesting mystery. I enjoyed the authors writing and insight into sisterly love and connection. The story was almost unbearably sad, however. The narrator read this book well but painfully slowly. I was desperate to speed it up; not only in time but also to lighten the unbearable sorrow of the story. The sadness of it makes me want to hug my sister and I know it will take a long time to shake the story and the feeling that I'm left with.

Plotless, dreary, boring

Couldn't get into this book, which is well-written but lacks key elements such as plot and movement. The main character talks to her dead sister throughout the book, an approach that some readers might find poetic, but just didn't work for me. Among the most boring books I've downloaded from Audible.

Sorry I ever got this one

This is a novel in need of much editing, poorly written and with a plot that relies on a primitive gimmick. The narrator does a good job with the voices but reads so slowly that it is excruciating. I turned my ipod to the fastest setting, which usually makes the reader sound like a high, squeaky chipmunk, but in this case it sounded normal and still too slow. Maddening. But the problem here is not the narrator. It is the weak plot, based on a crude gimmick, and peopled with single-dimension caricatures. What a waste.

intriguing, mysterious, literary

This just might be the best book I've ever downloaded.

A sister dies and her sister works endlessly to find out why. The twists and turns are perfectly placed and perfectly timed. I fell in love with the characters, especially the mother. Their pain, their sorrow, their remembrances brought me to tears more than once, but it isn't just a downer...I laughed out loud a few times and might have even cheered once or twice! The story kept me completely engaged; I was on the edge of my seat by book's end.

The narration was fantastic. Fantastic.

I learned of this book through a review in the New York Times and was so glad to find it on audible.

Very skillful thriller

A very well-written, well-plotted and well-narrated thriller. I am hoping for Emily Blunt and Carey Mulligan in the movie.

Enjoyed every second of this book.

I have listened to audiobooks for years, and don't give many glowing reviews but this deserves it. The book was well written (the ending really surprised me) and well narrated. Definitely worth your time.

tremendous

Gets off to a slightly slow start, but keep listening! The story is a tightly woven mystery with vivid characters (could do without the mother) and the ending is outstanding. Better writing than usual in a mystery novel...especially the ending.

In sixty-two years the best read EVER.

The narrator? One of the best I've listened to in a long time. It took three attempts at start

OMG......this book's ending frustrated me....

....to no end!!!!.....I am going to assume this was the author's plan......to make an ending that will tick you off enough to keep you thinking about the book for days after reading it and eventually bringing yourself to liking it more than you initially thought you did.....I felt this book was really slow in the beginning and was getting restless waiting for the good stuff to happen and just when I would be ready to give up....something intriguing would be dangled in front of me and I would keep on reading.....it does keep you guessing but I did figure out who the killer was early on.....but the DANG ending.....OMG......FRUSTRATION!!!!........
