Summary

America's favorite mermaid detective is back! Alexis Silver returns in her biggest adventure yet!

Even immortal beings need to get away from it all.

Mermaid Alexis Silver can tolerate only so many years living primarily on dry land before it’s time for a nice long swim. While she loves her work as a private investigator, a few nail-biter jobs in a row calls for some time off. She leaves everything behind - literally - and dives into the ocean, planning to take a month off cruising around Central America.

What’s the point of vacationing without seeing new things? Soon after arriving in Panama, curiosity pulls her to shore. A not-so-chance meeting with a vampire thrusts her straight into the middle of otherworldly chaos. It’s a challenge working a case when all her possessions are thousands of miles away, but not having a phone, money, or a comfortable outfit is the least of her problems.

She can’t stop the dark masters’ plans entirely, but she might be able to save one guy - if he doesn’t kill her first.

Either way, Alex Silver is going to need a vacation from her vacation.

Mermaid Detective

A short easy to listen to story.
Book 4 of the series
(currently last one available on audible)

Good book but uses repetitive information when not needed and also patches of information dumping rather than writing a fuller story.

Ignoring this, Alexis Silver series keeps me wanting more and I do hope there will be more.

Great

Alexis decides to take a vacation where a vampire tries to attack her . When she gets to know Miles he tells her he’s on his way to find someone to remove his dark master and she agrees to help him. I’m hoping this isn’t the final book in the series as I would like to know what happens with the rogue dark masters and their leader.

A high stakes paranormal adventure!

This is my first foray into the Alex Silver series without have read the prior three. I was told that this book does act as a standalone, so I wouldn’t miss out on much by jumping straight into Silver Crucible. That being said, I don’t necessarily agree with that. I was definitely confused for the first few chapters since it was clear that the readers should already know all about paranormal detective Alex Silver and her past. However, once you get to the meat of the story, that sense of being left out quickly fades.

Alex decides to refresh by swimming to Panama for a vacation. But even on vacation, Alex can’t seem to actually rest because she gets bitten by a vampire, Niles who is determined to give up his vampiric life in order to escape the Dark Master he serves. The stakes are high though, and Niles could easily wind up dead in the process, but Alex has to try, right?

What started off as a bit slowly, quickly exploded into a high stakes paranormal adventure filled with action and disaster. I mean we get a ghost ship filled with zombies in the Caribbean, which I was 100% here for.

I enjoyed Alex as a character. She’s a force to be reckoned with and doesn’t scare easily. Her chemistry with Niles was effortless. I really enjoyed their banter and how they balanced each other.

I definitely would the rest of this series since it’s honestly a lot of fun. BUT, start with book one.

Thank you to the author for providing a review copy. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own.

favorite!

I have enjoyed this series from book one -- but this is by far my favorite one! Alexis is on vacation. However unlike normal mortals and humans-- she gets sucked into helping a vampire (of all things) after almost being munched on. His hitchhiker wants to die and the struggle is real; whatever game Elizabeth is playing she's def upping the score with each dark entity.
Alexis learns of an alchemist with the ability to separate the dark from the host -- at what cost no one is sure of. Along the journey to find the missing piece to complete the process, she runs into a few mishaps and a few sunken ships. Few of those ships have hidden mysteries of their own that she feels obligated to help solve.
Nothing this PI can't handle.
this book is def more mystery than the others. more twists and turns, more intrigue to it.
I'm so glad the story continues and will hopefully have another installment.
not to mention the narrator, she really is spectacular and with any luck she'll be here for the entire series!

Another great Alex Silver story

I have loved getting to know Alex Silver in the series so much! She’s a fun character and her interactions with her dark master are always so much fun. It was fun to see Alex in a completely different setting and the new characters we got to meet in this story. As always Alex ends up having to deal with many more things than she bargained for. I really want to know more about what is going on with the dark masters and what the end game is going to be. As always Alex is a joy to follow along on her adventures. I can’t wait to see what will happen next. Definitely a story that can be read alone but it’s so much better read in the series and order to know everything that’s going on.

Alexis is supposed to be on vacation, but of course she doesn't just get to relax. She comes across a vampire and a ghost ship. Both need her help. This is a fun story and I love the conversations between the two of them

Mystery plot!!

Alexis finally takes her vacation and she finds herself helping a new friend out. When she finally goes out back to see in search for a mysterious item, I feel like this is really when the story picks up. I enjoyed the suspense and plot that surrounded the mysterious boat. It was fun and kept me on edge of my seat. The narrator, Kelly Huston did a wonderful job performing the story and using different tones and inflections for different characters. She truly elevates the story for me.

Different, but Fun!

This book in the Alexis Silver series is different from the previous books in the series. It’s more ghost story than private investigator style mystery. But, it’s still a fantastic book. It’s a very fun book and I love the different direction that this story took. It was a refreshing change and really lightened the mood of the series as a whole. Alexis seldom stresses about anything. Even ghosts and demons don’t phase her. She takes it all in stride and still keeps up a happy, and curiosity-filled life. It’s fun, and I kind of want to be more like her.

Kelley Huston shines, as always, as the narrator of the book. She is spot on with the mood of the characters and really makes the book feel like a story a friend of mine is telling me with full-technicolor descriptions. I love Kelley Huston’s style of narration and it works so well with this book!!
