Summary

The Sikh religion has a following of over 20 million people worldwide and is ranked as the world's fifth largest religion. However, events such as the verbal and physical attacks on Sikhs just after September 11 indicated that they were being mistaken for Muslims, and suggests that the raising of sufficient and appropriate awareness about Sikhism still needs to be addressed.

This book is one of the first to introduce newcomers to Sikhism's meanings, beliefs, practices, rituals, and festivals. Eleanor Nesbitt highlights the key threads in the fascinating history, from the Gurus and the development of the Sikh appearance, to martyrdom and militarization in the 17th and 18th centuries, and the diaspora. She also examines the recent proliferation of Sikh lifestyles in today's news and entertainment media. This book is an essential guide to increasing understanding of the Sikh religion and culture.

Horrible Narration

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Get a different narrator. She sounds like the lovechild of a mediocre tour guide and a bad screenreader. She butchers many of the non-English words and even pronounces English strangely at times.

What did you like best about this story?

The story was excellent.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Susan McIneary?

Literally anyone who wasn't obviously sight-reading every foreign word.

What character would you cut from Sikhism?

The narrator.

Any additional comments?

The story was excellent. I really, really tried to listen to this. But once I realized she wasn't even pronouncing the foreign words correctly, it was just too hard to listen to.

Better than potatoes!

Great book! Laid everything out simply and is a brilliant introduction to the topic. It provides you with all the core beliefs of Sikhism and some background knowledge on Punjabi culture.
