Summary
Who can you turn to if not the police?
Essex, Christmas Day. As the residents of a small town enjoy their mince pies, shots ring out in the street. Five people are gunned down before the lone shooter turns his weapon on himself.
Grace Fisher, now Detective Inspector, is tasked with making some sense of this atrocity - all the more sensitive because the first of the victims was one of their own: a police officer. The case throws her back together with crime reporter Ivo Sweatman, but as she investigates it becomes clear that the police connection goes much deeper than she thought. As the evidence of corruption grows and she is obstructed at every turn, Grace knows she is walking further into danger. Then, her young key witness disappears....
What far-reaching compromises will Grace have to make to safeguard the innocent?

Second in the series but better than the first
I wasn't sure what to expect with this book and I thought it was going to be a poor sequel to the first book in the series but I was wrong.
I thought the story telling was better in this book and there was a little more action, although in common with the first book there is plenty of police corruption and dodgy dealings to last the full story. Whilst it might not have been entirely believable I felt we got to know some of the characters a little better in this story.
Suspend disbelief and just enjoy the story for what it is and you'll enjoy the suspense and excitement as the case gets closer and closer to its conclusion. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Full of suspense whilst down to earth
This is book 2 of a series about a female detective. I really enjoyed the first book and the second one was just as good. I found all of the characters really interesting, strong and believable. The story was gripping and full of moral dilemmas. Looking forward to the next one in the series!

AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL!!!!!!!
I never write reviews but wold not want any one to waste a credit on this book... it doesn’t even merit one star.
The narration is so bad it detracts from the story to such a degree that it is impossible to indulge yourself in any plot or relate to the characters in any way.
I stuck with it in the hope that it would pick up and I’d at least be able to say the story line made up for the narration..... but sadly it didn’t.
So utterly disappointed.

Most enjoyable
This was an excellent story and I loved the fact that Ivo and Grace felt it was important to find answers for the perpetrators children. The plot was well thought out and really clever. I felt I had made a connection with Grace Fisher in book 1, so reading about her in book 2 was like meeting up with an old friend. I was pleased she'd made friends and realised that I have to stop worrying so much about the social lives of fictional characters! Moving along at a brisk pace, it really made me think about how parents' actions impact on their children. How they get caught up in a problem not of their making and I'm still thinking about it now. Surely, those are signs of a good book. A thoroughly engrossing book that I definitely recommend. I'm looking forward to book 3.

Excellent story
Although I find Grace a bit irritating at times, the moral dilemmas this author poses are very interesting. She makes the corruption believable as well as understandable whilst never leaving the reader in doubt as to when a line is crossed. This was a very clever story and I look forward to a lot more in this series. This would make a very good tv series.

Excellent sequel.
Grace continues in her solid way instigating a disturbing crime that a first looks nasty yet strength forward. Not so. Facing similar issues following her from her last case, in book 1, she pushes through to a good result. Compelling story moves at a good pace. I did not want to have to take breaks.......
