Summary

By the #1 New York Times bestselling author and unparalleled master of historical fiction, James Clavell’s Shogun is soon to be a major FX/Hulu TV series!

Shogun, the classic epic novel of feudal Japan that captured the heart of a culture and the imagination of the world, is now available for the first time in serial format. Part Two contains the second half of the complete novel.

After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss, and he is torn between two worlds that will each be forever changed.

Powerful and engrossing, capturing both the rich pageantry and stark realities of life in feudal Japan, Shogun is a critically acclaimed powerhouse of a book. Heart-stopping, edge-of-your-seat action melds seamlessly with intricate historical detail and raw human emotion. Endlessly compelling, this sweeping saga captivated the world to become not only one of the best-selling novels of all time but one of the highest-rated television miniseries, as well as inspiring a nationwide surge of interest in the culture of Japan. Shakespearean in both scope and depth, Shogun is, as the New York Times put it, ‘'not only something you read—you live it.’‘

What a ride.

Always wanted to pick up Shōgun. The recent Miniseries prompted me to get this.

Hard to describe. And anything I write won’t do it justice. I love books that make me look up their real world influences.

Much improved recording

Great listen … although I still found some character names difficult to tell one from the other !
Sound fade at points in the narration much improved over book 1

Fantastic narration

The first volume of the book is a lot more enjoyable than the second. I felt the second half meanders along in places towards what feels like an incomplete and unsatisfying conclusion. Overall I loved this book but I wish it had a more satisfying ending

AUDIBLE CAPITALISING ON SHOW

The book's fantastic but Audible decided to delete the 53 hour single book out of the library and upload it as two parts for purchase. this happened half way though my listening, I complained and was given extra credits to purchase the two parts.

rant over, it's a fab book!

really well done

Well read. The story is brilliant. The plot is flawless I think, and the characters are vivid. Clavell has a decent understanding of that period in Japanese history and he writes it well. I enjoyed it.

Great potential, but REALY overrated

The start is great and you are expecting it to get better and better as you proceed. Every page just gets worse and worse. Too discriptive, so many filler dialogues and the character building and development is off. Just cant fall in love with anything in the book. So sorry!
Numerous characters that got you lost. Who was who and how the connection were completes the confusion.
The ninja attacks is where I drew the line.
At this point I just hope the show deviates from the book, by A LOT. Especially the story line. it cant get worse at this point.
