Summary

Legends chronicle Robin Hood and Guy de Gisbourne as the deadliest of enemies. The reality is...complicated.

Home razed by Church edict, loved ones struck down by treachery, Rob is left for dead. Taken by the old druid master into the deeps, he emerges with a new name and purpose: Leader of a band of tight-knit outcasts, claiming the ancient forest and wielding the Horned God’s vengeance with silent, deadly arrows. Also escaping the aftermath of Loxley’s destruction, noble-born Gamelyn has returned from Crusade with his own new identity and purpose - but no absolution.

When the two boyhood lovers next cross paths, a brutal, blindfolded game of foxes and hounds ensues, pitting Templar assassin against Heathen outlaw. And as Robyn discovers his sister Marion is still alive, the game turns.

Thwarted kings of a breaking realm, Robyn Hode and Guy de Gisbourne must restore the Maiden to her rightful place - and manage to not destroy each other in the process.

Any additional comments?

Greenwode was one of the most powerful books I've ever read, so Shirewode had a hard act to follow. It managed it. The author has a tendency to over use certain phrases, but Shirewode is a powerful story of two men facing up to who they were and who they have become. Recommended for fans of the Robin Hood legend.

A lovely continuation, wish the rest were audio

I love this series. I purchased them first in paperback then in audio, as this premise was such a refreshing take on the old stories. The author has put so much life and detail into every bit of the old world , including the nature of living in the forests, the pagans' beliefs, and naive trust vs the church power, war and various life struggles of the day. I was extremely disappointed the rest of the series wasn't also on audio. Each story is long, but the detail and world building made it so alive for me that I was able to escape real life in such a way I felt reluctant to return. The first two books I listened to in a marathon weekend while escaping the media and Covid-19, and cannot recommend this series enough.

Great listen

Longish at times, but great non the less, not in the least due to the performance. A bit strange with the various accent imitations which spound somewhat off with the overall non-british read, but I loved the emotion portrayal and very distinct characters, comfortable pace, and the story is truly ingenuous :-)

epic

I love this series so freaking much. It is smartly written, I would almost think this was the original tale written so long ago. I really hope the rest comes out on audio. These stories and this narrator are life
