About this listen

There is a plot to kidnap Queen Victoria and only Sherlock Holmes can stop it...or can he?

Investigating a crime seemingly unconnected to the Royal Family, Holmes & Watson uncover a conspiracy to kidnap Queen Victoria and destabilise the British Empire.

With a ticking clock to her next public engagement, Holmes and Watson must discover who is behind the plot and locate her majesty, while Mycroft tries to keep the monarch’s disappearance a secret from the British people.

At first, Holmes believes Moriarty is responsible for the abduction, but when the Napoleon of Crime is proved innocent, Holmes must work with his arch-nemesis to rescue the Queen.

I like the idea of the plot, but I'm afraid the performance was really poor, with the Dr Watson character particularly so wooden he made it sound like a comedy skit! I've no idea how the plot would have turned out... 10 minutes in, I couldn't persevere any longer. I am requesting a refund on this one I'm afraid.

Poor performance killed this dead for me

I listen to Audible products every single day. In addition, I am both a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes & of Audible original dramas - there have been some that are absolutely superb.. But, oh dear - not this. The key essence of any audio production is the casting & this is woefully adrift. I have no idea behind the thinking, but Dr Watson is acted so woodenly, and so out of character, that it has a very detrimental effect on the overall production. Mrs. Hudson is written as an absolute cliche. Another serious issue is that too many of the characters sound exactly the same, so that the listener is left thinking 'who is this speaking'? Plus, it needs editing. Too many scenes are too long, too played-out and it drags the overall pace down to a crawl. I was so looking forward to this production, too, which makes it all the more disappointing. This could have been really great.

SADLY MISCAST

Always a treat to find a well produced radio play. The cast are superb and Hobna Holbrook-Smith shines as Doctor Watson.
Highly recommended. Can we have some more?

A great radio play, highly recommended

This is a bit of a mixed bag to be honest, and although it is an enjoyable Sherlock Holmes adventure with many a call back to earlier stories, it is not as polished as it could be. The performances for example are varied; while Holmes is excellently depicted on one hand, Doctor Watson on the other sounds like he's in constant pain and groans through his lines as though he's sat on a pin cushion. The plot is interesting and leans into historical events quite nicely, but the solution is rather predictable and disappointing. Overall it's worth a listen but more than likely not one you'll ever revisit.

Someone call a doctor for Watson.
