So boring - part of my life I’m never getting back

The pacing of this book is alllllll off. I got so very bored.

Some parts are ridiculously detailed (like all the gynae and birth sections) which just aren’t needed to add to the story (especially since it’s not even about the main character), and more like the author has got some bee in their bonnet about going on about how wonderful a woman’s body is (all a bit preachy). The overly idyllic birth and breastfeeding - may as well have been trumping rainbows whilst she was at it. Why was Mel so obsessed with getting Jack to measure and check all the time?! Baby’s gonna come regardless of whether you’ve been measured or not.

Then the story meanders off in all sorts of directions like a soap opera to different characters and it doesn’t build up to anything. It’s just a long winded book about simple people, doing small town stuff, going on and on about the same plot points, and the book just keeps plodding on. This might be a nice window into another world if the characters were likeable, but they were all a bit ‘meh’. Just left me feeling frustrated, bored, and like I’d wasted part of my life.

Excellent as always with Robyn Carr's books. Complete enjoyment from start to finish. Her characters live with you long after completion.

Excellent narration of a great book

If you could sum up Shelter Mountain in three words, what would they be?

Entertaining, Enjoyable, Believable.

What other book might you compare Shelter Mountain to, and why?

Virgin River, the first book in this series. The narration of both brought the stories alive.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

There are too many to choose just one as it's a close thing between Preacher and Paige's first time together and Jack delivering his son!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

It was short and just a mention of what happen when Paige would wake up at night frightened after all she's been through, and Preacher would just wrap his arms around her, rub her back and tell her he was there and everything would be ok.

Any additional comments?

Therese Plummer's narration brought the story to life. It was brilliant.

Wonderful story of kindness and unconditional love

If you've read my review of the first book in this series, Virgin River, you'll know why I like this author so much. Her ability to tell a compelling love story while keeping a smile on your face is only matched by Nora Roberts (at least as far as I've discovered- let me know who else I should try). She never uses demeaning language nor snarky comments to get a quick laugh and avoids graphic descriptions of violence. In this book, you learn more about the gruff "Preacher" and how tender he is on the inside. Paige is a battered wife looking for a new life and Preacher helps her find it. The descriptions of how Preacher helps her fight to get back her sense of self and safety are rich and help the reader to understand the plight of an abused woman a little better. The scene where Paige teaches Preacher to be a loving partner in bed is just beautiful. No wonder Robyn Carr is a best-selling author!

These books are fantastic!

Robyn Carr is such a masterful storyteller! She makes you feel like you know each character individually. These stories are well-written, funny, touching and believable, with just enough spicy romance to top it off. I sincerely hope Audible gets the rest of this series because they are truly wonderful. I suggest starting with the first book (Virgin River). Oh, and the narrator is EXCELLENT!

The Truth about Domestic Abuse

I want to start by thanking Ms. Carr for exposing the truth about domestic abuse. Unlike FSOG and similar BDSM books which glamorize & romanticize sexual violence, Shelter Mountain revealed what truly happens when an arrogant, selfish man conned a sweet, naïve woman (Paige) into a violent, degrading relationship, from which she was forced to run for her life or be beaten to death.

I thoroughly enjoyed the slow, sweet courtship of Paige and Preacher, which demonstrated how a true alpha male treats women and children. Preacher, a combat veteran, had seen too much senseless suffering and death to EVER strike another person except in the defense of others. Likewise, Paige did not wallow in self pity or regret but showed grit and determination in building a new life for herself and her son.

The best part of this series is the sense of community in Virgin River, a small town where neighbors actually look out for each other and kindness is valued more than money. Although the couples featured in each book are engrossing and well developed, the residents of Virgin River are addictive, from the grumpy old doctor to the old gals at the country store to the regulars at Jack's Bar & Grill.

Shelter Mountain

Too many "he said, she said." Short sentence structures and shallow content. Some good information on abuse.

Predictable but fun!

All the characters are wonderfully alive in this #2 Virgin River series. Robyn's sense of a fair-minded woman reminds me of the type of woman I should be and how I should respond when tough situations find their way into my life. The characters' comical dialogues and inward thoughts that make me laugh out loud. While there are a few predictable outcomes woven into the story line,it doesn't detract from the fun of the novel.

To the author: Robyn, I can get around the mild profanity you insert in your stories, which really isn't necessary, but I wish you would cool it on taking the Lord's name in vain. That is not cool and doesn't add value to the story. Would you please consider that?

Awesome series

The Virgin River series has been awesome and has not disappointed me. The characters are believable and are the kind of people you would want to know. I particularly liked the strong yet emotional character "Preacher", who was one of the main characters of Shelter Mountain. While the series obviously has females who are major characters, I'm enjoying reading a series that focuses on the men in the town! I would highly recommend it.
