Summary

Rachel Parker never planned on going back home. But when a terrible accident abruptly ends her riding career, she has little choice but to return to Pennsylvania and rebuild the family horse farm. Not everyone is happy to see Rachel, though - someone is vandalizing her property, leaving ominous warnings she can’t ignore. It’s as if the creep knows her. As if he’s watching her.

Police Chief Mike O’Connell never counted on Rachel Parker getting in his way. Mike is frustrated as his investigation turns up too many suspects and a shockingly turbulent past Rachel refuses to discuss. There’s no denying the passion igniting between them, but Mike can’t ignore his instincts, or the escalating violence against Rachel. He senses she has a secret, one she refuses to share. A secret that is going to get her killed….

Had to stop reading...

...not because it was scary, but because of the constant, lurid references to sexual attraction. We get it, there is sexual tension. She's trying to ignore it. No need to oversell it - the audience is much more emotionally aware than the author seems to give credit for. I do like my books to have a human element, but this gets in the way of otherwise fine story telling. Love the dog, though!

mediocre

the narration was flat and one dimensionalast which made the characters the same so I could not really invest in them.

I also found the book predictable perhaps because I listened to it straight after when can run.

I won't try anymore in this series as I suspect they all follow the same pattern so the identity of the criminal will never be a surprise.

Good suspense but poor narration

A great story with a realistic romance, somewhat ruined by poor narration. The female voices of this narrator were really irritating - she made her voice rise too high to distinguish from the male voices and it sounded like the female characters were children.

I would happily read another book by this author, but would probably avoid if it had the same narrator.

Worst narrator ever!!

I could have enjoyed this book but they picked the wrong narrator. Books with only one narrator need narrator's who can mimic both male and female voices, which Elizabeth Pike could not do. I had a hard time figuring out who was talking to who and getting irritated because all the male voices were feminine. The story itself was ok although it was easy to figure out who the villain was.

An Ordinary Performance

The performance was a bit limiting. It was hard most of the time to differentiate the characters voices.

Wishing I lived in this town. Great characters!

I loved how this story is in the same town as the first book.
But we get to learn about different characters or meet new people in town. There's characters in this story from book one which I think pulls it all together. It seems like a real place.

Overall great read, loved the story. Getting book three today!

Side note: I wish I could live in this town with theses characters. Such great friends. Lol

Disappointing

I enjoy Melinda Leigh books; this one not so much. Cliche ridden and too predictable. I could have overlooked this if not for the horrendous performance by Elizabeth Pike. Boo!

The narrator ruined the audible version

There’s no reason a female who sounds like a child should have narrated a book where there are several very large hulking males. Her voice seemed to get even more child like when she spoke as a male. I’ve listened to dozens of female narrators who were able to easy convey the character as a male but this one seemed to come off as a high school drama student hired on the cheap to get this book narrated. It was too bad as I did enjoy the story and the series.

My favorite series

This is the second audiobook I heard.
I loved the text version books of Melinda Leigh and tried an audio version.
The story is really captivating.
I would recommend to people who like crime solving stories with women as main character.

Overall, this audiobook was nice and narrator's character distinction was ok.

Can't listen to it

Normally no reader is so bad that I can't listen to a book, but she is soooo bad I can't tell the characters. Have no idea of whats going on.
The book in the series before this was so good that I wanted to go through the whole series. Sadly can't do it.
