Summary
Captain Sharpe's task is to recover from a feared guerilla leader the gold Wellington so desperately needs. The enemy he faces strikes terror into the hearts of all around - a renegade guerilla band whose leader has a particular loathing for Sharpe, who has stolen his woman.
Soldier, hero, rogue - Sharpe is the man you always want on your side. Born in poverty, he joined the army to escape jail and climbed the ranks by sheer brutal courage. He knows no other family than the regiment of the 95th Rifles whose green jacket he proudly wears.
Critic reviews
"Sharpe and his creator are national treasures." (Sunday Telegraph)
"Bernard Cornwell is a literary miracle. Year after year, hail, rain, snow, war and political upheavals fail to prevent him from producing the most entertaining and readable historical novels of his generation." (Daily Mail)
"Cornwell's narration is quite masterly and supremely well-researched." (Observer)
"The best battle scenes of any writer I've ever read, past or present. Cornwell really makes history come alive." (George R.R. Martin)

Sharpest gold
Another great read by Mr Corwell. I felt some of the chapters were a bit of a specie filler but over all it is dam good read.

Sharpe is no Yorkshireman!
I read the Sharpe novels back in the ‘90s, and I recall that his backstory has him born and growing up in one London’s worst slums, but when Sean Bean played Sharpe in the TV series, he used his own Sheffield accent. I can only assume that the producer of this audio book took Bean’s portrayal as accurate and therefore made the narrator, Rupert Farley, affect a northern accent for his Sharpe. This would be bad enough, but it is also laid on with a trowel, to the extent that our heroic Richard Sharpe sounds like a comedy extra from ‘The Last of the Summer Wine. Such a shame.

A great adventure.
As always a fantastic read. Sharpe not impregnable yet battles through. Great to see him rewarded for such bravery. Inspiring.
Can't wait to continue until all in this series are read and enjoyed. Thanks Bernard.

Where the hell did that ending come from?
Excellent narration, bizzare and extreme ending, which I personally do not agree with. Very unlike Sharpe. Fortunately the other books make up for this...

2nd of the series - good - but not as good as 1st
This is a good solid story with just enough to keep you listening. Characters from the series are easy to follow with just a little repetition. New characters are a little hollow and straining to buy into. The story is slow and some battle sequences are long and slow down the pace of the book. It’s not as good as the first but if you’re doing the entire series (the only reason you’d be here) you’ll get through it - so you know where you are in the next instalment.
It’s excellently narrated. Well produced. Entertaining. Worth it.

Brilliant and twisty
I didn’t know which way this was going to go, and for it to go to such a dark place was quite unexpected. The duel was gruesome as well

Ending is absurd?
Can't say much without spoiling but Sharpe's solution at the end is insane and although it's addressed as a last resort it's still a huge stain on Sharpe's character. Difficult to know how I feel about the character now.

loved it the first time, love it 20 years later
I first read the paperback edition of this when I was in my early 20s. Now in my mid 40s I still love this book and this series. Straight to Sharpe's Escape for me:-)
