The author goes full romcom
I enjoyed the first book of the series–and first novel by the author–but there were some problems that I was hoping would get fix in the subsequent books. And they were!
My main problem at first was the predominance of dialogues. It was way better in this book. We get more insights into the characters’ mind, but also a better feeling of the setting and mood. The characters aren’t just people who talk, they’re also people who feel. People who live and love. A great improvement.
Also, though it’s a personal taste, this book was sexier too. And this time, it’s also serious sexy, not just crazy sexy. That pushes the chemistry between Louise and James off the charts. And the balance between humor and sexiness is better. I mean, there’s still plenty of humor, and of the crazy kind too. But the characters are more than just comedic functions–at least the main characters, side characters are often more gimmicky.
The fact that, this time, we get the male character’s point of view, gives him more flesh. The series is clearly about the female characters and their quirks, but leaving aside the male character’s thoughts puts the books more in the women’s fiction genre than in the romance genre. Here the author goes full romcom and James’s point of view helps the love story progress.
I guess the theme was how much space you allow people to take in your life and why. We have parents who make sacrifice for their kids, and parents who sacrifice their time with their kids. We have Louise who used to live her life for others–like her mother–and decides that she won’t make choices depending on other peoples ever again. We have James who’s going to upend his life to live closer to his daughter.
One aspect of the story baffled me a bit. The author wrote James as an alcoholic who’s been sober for a long time. Sure, his backstory explains how he came to this, but his status as an ex-alcoholic has no relevance to the love story. He doesn’t struggle. It isn’t a problem for Louise that could become a point of contention. It doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work. It becomes some kind of symbol between James and Louise, and gives James a group of friends separated from Louise’s. Maybe that’s just me trying to find a purpose when it should just be a fact.
The narration was on point. The author narrates her book once again, and she does it with talent–she knows the story and the characters, and she knows how to convey what emotion she put in words. For James, she chose my favorite narrator, who also happens to have the perfect timing and the right energy to give life to her words. Together, they bring the story to another level. While the humor is still very present, feelings and emotions shine brighter. A great book to listen to.

Sharky fun!
Sharkbait is book 3 in Erin Mallon's Natural History series. The whole series is hilarious. There are so many laugh out loud & tea spitting moments.
Sharkbait starts with Louise throwing caution to the wind with a one night stand with a hot as hell barman. Just one night no names, no connection, no feelings! A quickie, there is no time in her life for a relationship.
Louise's upbringing was dysfunctional at best. Her dad left and her mum became a serial 'monogamiser', neither seemed to remember they had 2 kids. Louise worries she becoming her mum, so decides some alone time would be best. Feelings have a habit of being caught when you least expect it.
There is a slightly different feel to this story but it is exactly right for Louise's story. Louise has a different view of the world than the lady leads in book 1 & 2 and that is reflected this book. I think that's also what makes them besties.
James is much more open to catching all the feels, he's been mightily successful in dealing with his demons. He's ready for his next chapter. He is a really decent guy, with so much love to share.
The audio is on point. Erin narrates with Teddy Hamilton bring a further dimension to this is a laugh out loud, sexy story.

An instant favourite
Erin Mallon never fails to entertain me. Every book…or play is filled with layered in thought-provoking subjects with the comedy, and she does it so well. Sharkbait was no different. I loved every second of this book. It was funny, as we have come to expect from Erin, it was charming, sweet, and steamy. I loved Louise and James’s journey. I went through the gambit of emotions with this book. I laughed. I swooned. I was even brought to tears.
This book is slightly different to the others in the series. A little more serious and has POVs from the heroine and the hero, which is my favourite, so I loved that change. Without doing a disservice to the previous two books, I do feel this book had more depth to it. There is still the comedy elements, but with more. It works. Trust me.
Teddy Hamilton as James was genius casting. The way James is written is how I imagine Teddy to be in his personality. Erin brilliantly voiced Louise…it is always a joy to listen to her. Together, Erin and Teddy are superb and a joy to listen to. A+

Laugh out loud and full of heart!
I have loved every book and play of Erin Mallon's that I have read or listened to, and Sharkbait is no different! That said, I never know what I am going to get with an Erin Mallon creation. In the case of Sharkbait I got a laugh out loud comedy with a lot of heart. Louise is an interesting character. She is trying to learn how to be an independent woman, and follow her dreams, while still discovering them. She is also recovering from her childhood trauma, of having to raise herself because her parents were not present. She has some funny quirks that cause awkwardly humorous moments and she goes through a lot of growth through this book. James is a bartender at the beginning of the book, a one night stand for independent Louise, but he is so much more. A fascinating entrepreneur in his early 30s who has lived more life than those in their 60s. He is a modern day single dad to the coolest kid, and an instantly lovable romance hero. This is a romance where the hero falls first and pursues the heroine, and I was rooting for him the whole time!
This book will give you warm fuzzies, while you laugh out loud. Narrated by Erin Mallon and Teddy Hamilton, these two perfectly capture not only Louise and James, but also the side characters who we have met in previous books! I loved the dual perspective and dual narration in this book, getting James' POV was such an important addition to the story.
I highly recommend reading or listening to Sharkbait, and if you haven't read the other 2 books in the Natural History series, what are you doing with your life? Go read them too! right away!
