Ellie Bennett was never meant to be here.

One moment, she was in her world. The next, she was standing in a desert, drawn to a tower that should not exist. Inside, she finds a prisoner—bound by magic, waiting for the one who can break the spell. Waiting for her.

He summoned her for one purpose: to set him free.

Now, they are bound together in a land where magic is outlawed and those who wield it are hunted.

Power is dangerous. Secrets even more so.

Sacha Torran is manipulative, cunning, and always three steps ahead. He wields words like weapons, never reveals more than he must, and bends the world around him to his will.

And Ellie is about to discover that breaking his chains was just the beginning …

A stunning new fantasy romance series, where magic is outlawed, power is a death sentence, and the only person who can help her was never meant to be freed.

Shadowvein is an amazing new romatasy from L.Ann.

I listened to this audio after reading the series. I really enjoyed the story again as listening to it being performed by these two narrators brought the story up to a whole other level. It was a real pleasure to hear the characters that have been crafted by L.Ann being voiced. Like all her writing she brings about the world building as you go through the story and not have to slog through an information dump like so many other fantasy stories.
Narration 5 🌟

From the second Ellie gets pulled through the portal, I was HOOKED. The world is dark, atmospheric and dangerous, and I loved that magic actually feels like it comes with a price. Add magic hunters, secrets, danger and a slow-burn romance and l was DONE.
And Sacha Torran...
cunning. Manipulative. Sharp-tongued. Morally questionable. Basically everything I want…
The chemistry between Ellie and Sacha??? THE TENSION. The accidental bond trope + slow burn had me glued to my headphones.
And the audiobook narration by Lilly Drake & Benjamin Grow was AMAZING. Their duet narration brought the characters to life and made every emotional scene hit so much harder. It genuinely felt like watching a movie in my head.
If you love romantasy with danger, tension and an MC who will have you questioning all your life choices... ADD THIS TO YOUR TBR.

Loved every second of this!!

Imagine walking on a busy Chicago street on a cold, rainy day two days before Christmas, juggling the crowds, and then a minute later landing in a scorching desert, with no one or anything in sight. That is exactly what happened to Ellie Bennett, not having a clue what happened or where she was, only knowing survival instincts and the need to find shelter from the elements. L. Ann delivers a heart-pounding start to her imaginative romantasy, and it is great to see another side of her creative mind and her incredible world-building. Ellie finds shelter is a mysterious tower-like building that lets her in, and there is only one occupant, Sacha Torran, and the structure is his prison and, unbeknownst to her, she is the one to free him. Ellie just wants to go home, but Sacha has other plans for her and limits what he reveals to her until she is ready to hear and handle it. This is no simple tale, but an adventure, a journey into another realm, and magic is power, power that is being suppressed. A fascinating start to the trilogy, a lengthy book that lays down the foundation, builds not only the fantasy world but the relationship between Ellie and Sacha, while learning more about each. There is plenty more coming, and lots more to learn, especially with that cliffhanger ending, an ending that leaves you needing more. This masterfully crafted, multi-layered story has a perfect balance of drama, angst, twists and turns, thrilling suspense, and a slow on the build romance. L. Ann, thank you for another great story and wild ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the fantastic audiobook listen and production performed in duet by Lilly Drake and Benjamin Crow, who were amazing at bringing the characters and story to life. They embodied their characters completely, with Drake nailing it as Ellie, showcasing her personality perfectly, growing as her character grew in confidence and fierceness. Crow was just as amazing in Sacha’s role, keeping his control and power understated, but there. Both were fantastic at performing the roles of the side/secondary characters and handling the foreign language. Their expressive delivery conveys all the characters’ emotions, making you feel each one. These two make a fabulous team, with voices and talent that complement each other and a riveting performance that keeps you glued to the story.

Intriguing & Imaginative! Great Story & Narration!

If I thought nothing could beat the book? Well the audiobook is simply amazing.. and I freaking love how the voices made the story comming even more alive if that was even possible. If you love this book? You need to listen to the audio. ❤️ if your new to this author or the story then buckle up for a wild ride of fantasy, action and so much more.

For me no one can do a magically slow burn, longing and angst romance then this author, and to bring in those voices just made it so much better for me.

Taken from a different world and thrust into one filled with intrigue and danger Ellie Bennett found herself at the mercy of questionable prisoner Sacha Torran with a seemingly dark agenda. At the same time they had a bond that couldn’t be explained or wanted to be explained… it’s messy, complicated, raw and completely intresting to the point where it’s not only the author how have created this new world you also find yourself deeply in it, just be aware that it ends on a mayor cliffhanger…

So amazing!

I wasn’t even half way through this story to know that this is one of my most favourite listens of 2026! I have been patiently waiting for Shadowvein to become an audiobook.
This is not your typical Romantasy, it’s so much more! There are no dragons or fae but instead there are portals and magic and a mysterious shadow lord… Ellie was Christmas shopping, walking along the festive streets when suddenly she found herself in a strange world meeting Sacha, a man who is more than he originally seems.
Lilly Drake is the perfect Ellie. She portrays Ellie’s strength, vulnerability and resilience in ways that draw you more into the story.
Benjamin Crow is fantastic as Sacha. The way he brings Sacha to life is incredible. How he pronounces the Meridian vocabulary leaves goosebumps on my arms. It’s magical.
5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A must listen to for all romantasy lovers. I can’t wait for book 2, Stormvein.
“Where shadow leads, storm will follow…”
