Summary

You don’t choose the academy. The academy chooses you.

I had no idea how those words would change my life. Or how they’d changed my life already...until the day the most dangerous man I’ve ever met waltzed onto my farm and left us a death sentence. In an invitation.

My younger brother has been chosen for the prestigious, secret magical school hidden within the folds of our mundane world. A place so dangerous, they don’t guarantee you’ll make it out alive.

If he doesn't go, our entire family will be killed. It’s the same invitation my older brother received three years ago - the same place where he mysteriously died.

The academy has already killed one sibling. I’ll be damned if they take another. I do the only thing an older sister can: chop off my hair, strap on two bras to flatten the girls, and take my brother’s place.

Magic and monsters are real. Assassins are coming for me, and the dead are prone to rise. What’s a girl faking it as a boy supposed to do? That’s right - beat the academy at its own game. Or die trying.

Praise for the book:

"This book is Harry Potter meets the Hunger Games in a bold twist on a classic magical young adult adventure." (Jaymin Eve, best-selling author of Supernatural Academy series)

wickedly funny

It's so much fun, dark at times, with lots of feeling and thought put into these characters. A good FML and sideburns as a second can't wait to see where he ends up overall thoroughly enjoyed both reading this book and listening to it now onto the second ride

Interesting.

Ok, here we go!!

I've read MANY books written by both K. F. Breene and Shannon Mayer, and I've loved them, but this is the first book I've ever read with both collaborating together.

If I'm to be honest, and I ALWAYS an in all my reviews, I found this book interesting........But I also found it very slow going and a little more difficult to get into.

I've always found that both authors usually have a slightly faster pace in their books. I really expected the same for this book!!

Don't get me wrong, the story is good and there's plenty of stuff going on in it. I just wish it had a slightly faster pace.I

I know a lot of people won't agree with me, but that's ok, each to their own. I've given five stars, simply because the book is good. You've just got to keep going with the slower than usual pace!!

Now the narrator for the audio is a woman I've never come across before, Khristine Hvam. I therefore didn't know what to expect of her.

I found that she was very good at making sure her main characters had their own voices, helping us to be able to differentiate between each one.

As I'm not American, I cannot tell if the accents are spot on, but I do know the Texan accent and she was spot on. I found that she was easy to understand and extremely easy to listen to.

She has a soothing voice and I actually fell asleep while reading and listening to the audio. And it wasn't because I was bored 😂😂

Now would I recommend both book and audio, then I'm pleased to say yes.....

But I do hope that the books will now pick up the pace and move from interesting to great. Maybe?? We'll soon see!!

The sounds is really bad,

Every other chapter is very low, hard to hear. Not very good quality. It makes it difficult to follow the story.

Sound bad

The sound changes with each chapter and appears to jump quite a lot when reading the story so a little difficult to follow with the different changes in pitch and sudden appearance of a jump

Ok

Liked it but not enough to buy the next ones. Feels like it's only half a book. In my opinion having one trial per book is daft, there should be one big book and then an afterwards or split it into two books. Shame cos its a good story.
