Summary

Thousands of years ago, the gods fought and fell in the deeps beneath what is now Southmarch Castle, then were banished into eternal sleep. Now at least one of them is stirring again, dreaming of vengeance against humankind.

Southmarch haunts the dreams of men as well as gods. Royal twins Barrick and Briony Eddon, the heirs of Southmarch’s ruling family, are hurrying back home as well: Barrick now carries the heritage of the immortal Qar inside him, and Briony has a small army at her back and a fiery determination to recover her father’s throne and revenge herself on the usurpers.

The cruel and powerful southern ruler known as the Autarch of Xis wants the power of the gods for his own - a power he can only gain if he conquers Southmarch.

And nobody knows what the Qar want, only that the mysterious fairy-folk are prepared to die for it - or to kill every living thing in Southmarch Castle and in all the lands around.

It will come to an apocalyptic conclusion on Midsummer Night, when the spirits of the haunted past and the desperate struggles of the present come together in one great final battle. Many will die. Many more will be transformed out of all recognition, and the world will be forever changed.

Trilogy review

I have enjoyed other Tad Williams books therefore gave these ago. The start I found a little confusing however characters and story smoothed out nicely and I enjoyed the series and worth a listen. The narrator done a fair job but at times made Briony sound weak and whiny. Four stars as Tad’s other book were superior.

Lovely ending of a great tale

I loved all the books. This is the second complete series from Williams I listened to and both are unique, filled with stories and history and rich in their own universe. Loved it through and through.

So sad it's over

The whole shadow march series has taken up the last months of listening. I can imagine the book itself is as unputdownable as can be! Really good story, performance. Just brilliant so sad it's finished!

Got there in the end

Ok, so 120 hours later and it finally done.
It was a tough start and a struggle in the middle, but it all came together in the end and made for a good listen all told.
I nearly gave up as I really didn’t like the narration at the beginning, but he grew on me and I upped the speed to x1.5 which I felt helped a lot.
I think the books are probably very well written, but there’s just so much detail told about everything that it becomes a long haul to get to anywhere where something actually happens and I wonder if this kind of detail is best left to read books rather than audio... anyway, I’m glad I stuck it out!
