Summary

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves her life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha… and the secrets of her heart.

A great start to a series

The perfect narrator for such a fantastical story, Miss Fortgang gives life to not only Alina's voice but to the whole cast, I don't think I can imagine them soundig any other way now.

As for the book itself, its been a long time since I've been so pushed to find out what happened next but with Shadow and Bone I simply could not devour it quick enough. The world is oddly realistic and enchanting, the characters complex and interesting. I'm looking forward to reading more from Leigh Bardugo.

Only a 4 because six of crows is amazing and 5 plus along with king of scars and crooked kingdom. A wonderful entry to a magical world with awesome characters and plots.

The writing is not that great

It is a fun, but the writing style in itself is quite meh. We'll see if the rest of the series picks it up a bit.

Great narrative and voice.

Really enjoy the story. Was hoping that each character to portray in a suitable voice or sound.

Good story but performance was missing something.

I enjoyed the story...I think. I felt that the reading was lacking. I think a story that has such action needed a more dramatic reading.

...

I unfortunately came to the table late with the Grisha books and seem to have listened to them back to front, which I regret as I did not get as much enjoyment out of this book as I might have. That is not to say it was not a good book, though and I have enjoyed the series immensely.

A good start to a series

I got this book after seeing it was coming to Netflix and wanted a chance to get a taste of the world. I really liked the story and the world it built. Alina is interesting and I've enjoyed getting to know her more. The book introduced a lot of characters who I'm excited to see what happens to them and the ending had a nice twist to make you want to dive into the sequel. An overall nice read. The narrator Lauren Fortgang is good, and she really puts each character across well. I occasionally found it to be slightly slower paced than other audiobooks but I didn't mind that at all.

Good book well read

Great story, lovely prose, very enthusiastic and engaging performance! The premise is fun and the world-building well achieved. The narrator does a very good job at delivering the text very expressively, though their approach to voices/accents seems slightly sporadic and occasionally detrimental.

Disappointing, bland, boring

I watched and enjoyed the Netflix series.

This is the first and only time I can ever remember where the book has been worse than the screen adaptation.

Usually a book is so much richer in terms of story and depth, but in this case the book falls massively short. I finished it, but was very disappointed.
