Summary

They were told that the only crime they must never commit was to be caught. Women of enormous cunning and strength of will, the Shadow Warriors' stories have remained largely untold - until now. In a dramatic tale of espionage and conspiracy in World War II, Shadow Warriors of World War II unveils the history of the courageous women who volunteered to work behind enemy lines. Sent into Nazi-occupied Europe by the United States' Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and Britain's Special Operations Executive (SOE), these women helped establish a web of resistance groups across the continent. Their extraordinary heroism, initiative, and resourcefulness contributed to the Allied breakout of the Normandy beachheads and even infiltrated Nazi Germany at the height of the war, into the very heart of Hitler's citadel - Berlin. Young and daring, the female agents accepted that they could be captured, tortured, or killed, but others were always readied to take their place. So effective did the female agents become in their efforts, the Germans placed a price of a million francs on the heads of operatives who were successfully disrupting their troops.

Narrated by a Sat Nav?

Whilst the content is flawless and somewhat riveting, this audiobook is completely spoilt by the lazy use of sound board which in short makes it sound like it’s being read by an elevator or sat nav....it’s so irritating and such a shabby poor quality method of recording narrative. I’d like my credit back and hope that audible refrain from ruining future publications with shoddy quality recordings.

Stilted presentation, with phonetic pronunciation

French words must have been phonetically
written, as if for a child. Very clear voice and presentation, would be good for someone without English as a first language, but lacks some complexity and depth for native English speakers. I'd rather have read the book than listened to this. Pity.

Exceptional decision to have Kate read this book.

Compelling account of the women soldiers of WW2 for whom women of today owe so much. And yet, society still has not been fully able to view women as equals to men. Thank you to the authors for sharing the war-time events of these women.

Fantastic

Great side of history seldom seen or written about. Plaudits go to all who were involved.

Fascinating and poignant history

Incredible work on those that we forget the most and honour the least. Without these folk I very much doubt I would be here today. Incredible, read this after listening to The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, another good work but more focused on the men involved.

Truly amazing individuals

A great window into the drama of undercover operations in Europe during WW2.

Excellent insight into planning, ops and individuals.

Excellent telling of a story of women's strength, courage and intelligence

Very well done history of the women of the OSS and SOE who were key to the allies success in WWII. The reading was
Not only perfect for this history but her pronunciation was superb. I would have liked more about the bravery and creativity of the women whose histories are given. Alll in all this history ranks up there with the McCullough Truman bio and his bio of the Wright brothers. I want more about these amazing women.

OUSTANDING - MUST BE REMEMBERED!

The lifespan for a woman doing this work was about 6 weeks! They did the work to help win WWII against Evil! They cannot be forgotten! Some had children and wanted a better life for their children. Each is our example to carry on no matter how tough life got!!!

A book facts rather than gripping action.

Very illuminating book on a little know part of WW2, but not a gripping spy story.

I'm forcing myself to finish...

I'm sure the ladies will show up eventually. I'm almost halfway through and almost no comments concerning women except to mull over whether they'll even accept them. So far, it's about 90% men and what they did - not what I downloaded this book to hear.

A necessary story about women warriors.

an excellent focus on women's secret role in turning the tide of the war in europe. Reads like a spy novel but packed full of interesting information and amusing anecdotes about the realities of working and living behind the lines.

So Very Informative.

This is a somewhat unusual, but thoroughly enjoyed book. My only criticism is that it’s a bit disorganized and I would have preferred that it proceed in a chronological order. Although this is not only about the women, I still found it exceptional. Whether exactly true or not, some of the minute details of encounters, including verbatim language, I found inspiring. Some may not prefer the narrators style which some may call monotone, but I found that it’s even rhythm more enjoyable than if it had been delivered in the more traditional style.

Well Done

Great narration, especially with so many names and places. There is so much in formation on this subject and the author did a good job of organizing it.
