Wonderfully Helpful Training Book!

This was clear and detailed enough to follow easily. The schedule, training one thing at a time and building on skills the dog has learned, is very useful. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to train their own Service Dog. It is very informative and quite easy to understand.

This Could Have been a Good Book

First, let me say that I am reviewing the Training your own Service dog and Psych Service Dog Bundle by Max Matthews. This author might have trained service dogs, but his ideas of what breeds can become service dogs, and who can train them, are woefully limited.

1. There are exceptions to any rule. Livestock guardian breeds can work as psychiatric service dogs. German Shepherds can work as guide and hearing dogs. I find the author's breed bias incredibly disappointing.

2. Many disabled folks train their own dogs. I know, myself included, many blind folks who train their own guide dogs, diabetics who train their own dogs to alert them to low blood sugar, and even those with seizures who train their own dogs for seizure alert dogs. For a person who supposedly works with those with disabilities, he sure does have a narrow minded view of who can train a service dog and what kind of dog can become one.

3. The story is not well written. There are constnat mistakes in grammar and this is annoying. How can I be expected to take an author seriourly, when he can't even be bothered to write correctly.

4. "Guide dogs are expensive". All guide dog schools in the US and Canada do not charge for the dog. One school does charge a nominal fee of $150, but if a person cannot pay, they are not turned away.

5. "Seeing Eye Dog"? The appropriate term for a dog who guides a blind person is dog guide. Seeing Eye Dog only refers to those who come from the school in Morristown NJ.

6. This author has an outdated view of dogs, pack behavior, etc.

In short, if you want to learn to train your own service dog, get a different book. One that give correct information.

While there is some good information here, it's overshadowed by all the misinformation, and the author's misconceptions.

Excellent book for Service Dog

There is a lot of training that goes into being a Service dog. As a reader, I laughed about President Bush's dog Barney. It seems, the little dog was a little terror. The Secret Service and their dogs were very professional about dealing with Barney. I recommend this book to fellow animal lovers.

A wonderful book as well written as her last two books. If you want to know about service dogs, Maria is your go to girl. These dogs and their humans do very vital and dangerous work. Great book on training your own service dog!

I found this book exceptionally helpful in finding out the proper way to train a service dog. It has clear explanations and lots of great tips and tools for training and free shaping desired behaviors. One thing I'd like to have seen is perhaps a bit more focus on, or at least mention of, behaviors on the public access test. Over all, excellent book and I highly recommend it.
