Summary

An Internal Affairs investigator was murdered and his brother, Donovan Goldwyn, was framed. Now Donovan is desperate to prove his innocence. And the one person who can do that is the woman who saved him from a deadly hurricane - Beth Kennedy. From the moment their fates intertwined, passion consumed him. He wants her in his arms. More, he wants her by his side in his darkest moments.

Beth Kennedy may not know everything about Donovan, but she can’t deny what she feels for him. It’s her love for him that pushes her to do whatever she has to do to help him get justice, including putting herself in a criminal’s crosshairs.

When a tip reveals the killer's location, they travel to California, but then an earthquake of catastrophic proportions separates them. As aftershocks roll the land, Beth and Donovan have to endure dangerous conditions while trying to find their way back to one another. Will they reunite and find the killer, or will they lose everything?

Mostly a good story

The underlying story of the hunt for a killer and thriller aspect was very good. I enjoyed the thriller aspect & thought the earthquake section was particularly scary as we don’t suffer these. Thankfully!
The narrator was good & kept the story going well.
I’ve lowered my stars as I’m not a big fan of sex scenes in thriller books, I tend to skim them but the scenes in this were graphic and too detailed for my personal taste. I just don’t enjoy extreme details in a thriller story, I don’t see the point. My personal opinion, I found the interaction especially at the beginning very creepy between the main characters. I think this put me off the rest of the scenes between then.
Lots have enjoyed it and that’s great. As I said my personal opinion only

enjoyable listen

This was an interesting listen with a bit of a chase and a bit of romance and 2 really likeable characters, inc a strong, feisty lady and well as a 'violet' eyed dashing man. It was an easy listen and sets you up nicely for the next in the series.

"Driving his libido into overdrive."

This is the second in the Disaster Crimes series by Chrys Fey and, initially, I thought that, had I previously read the first book, this one might had been easier to slip into. But now? I don't really think it matters. Beth and Donovan are a couple, at least, they do seem to spend a lot of time coupling, which, for me, seriously distracts from my enjoyment of the story. Especially as it can be quite graphically described. Not being a fan of romances, I am willing to tolerate some lovey dovey, boy meets girl and they fall for each other stuff, but this is more washed out pornography at times, and there are far too many times. The rest of the story, by contrast, is quite entertaining, an unusual thriller, well written, including a description of an earthquake.

Narration of this book is by the excellent Bill Nevitt - a fine timbre of voice, well paced and modulated.
So how to rate this book? The narration kept me listening to the end but the emotional plus interplay between the main protagonists was not only irritating, it was truly off putting. I'm sure this would further enhance the book for some but not for me. So, perhaps somewhere in the middle.
My thanks, however, to the rights holder who,,at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy.

Decent romantic thriller amidst nature's law

The story: The couple in this series, don't really have a chance, moving from one natural disaster to another, all the while being chased by, or chasing, nefarious people.
I'm not against romance books and they aren't a goto read for me, but those parts of the story, that as many people have said quite steamy, still didn't deter me from listening. I had read the first book prior to this to get an idea of the characters and therefore was used to the quite creepy start to their relationship in this book. However, it grows, very maturely.
The thriller side was very well written, with good pace, a few intense and flowing set pieces. Beth and Donovan were well-rounded characters. I was invested in their chase of the killer.
The narration: by Bill Nevitt, was excellent, kept the pace of the writing and made the intense set pieces thrilling, and read the romantic elements realistically.
A nice easy listen and will likely look out for the next book.

Romance/crime novel

This is a romance/crime novel set during natural disasters, with heavy focus on the love angle and sex scenes. I did enjoy listening to this story, although I could have done with a lot less PDA. The characters are entertaining, the storyline is flowing, and the crime aspects are quite thrilling.
This is the second book in the series and can be listened to as a standalone. (My suggestion would be to start with the first one though.)
I thought this audiobook was an easy listen, made even more enjoyable by Bill Nevitt’s narration.

Romance on rocky ground

I enjoyed the second part of this book more than the first part, so stick with it. The book is billed as a suspense/thriller but I think it needs its own heading of romance/disaster. The first part of the book is explaining what happened in book one, which I didn't mind because I haven't listened to the first book and it explained what was going on but what I did find very tedious was they were jumping in bed every five minutes (the romance?). You know who the killer is and why so they is no mystery just how in the second half of the book they set out to catch him only to be caught up in a natural disaster, which I found interesting and saved the book for me. The story was well written and I did like the characters, especially Beth. I like it when a woman can take care of herself. it just didn't need all the sex scenes. I will be listening to the next book because the story isn't over yet.
Donovan risked his and new girlfriend Beth's life to prove he didn't kill his brother but the real killer a corrupt cop got away. Donovan unable to let it go tracks him down to California. The pair are just about to confront the killer when an earthquake hits. With looters in the streets, sink holes opening up in front of them, building on fire and people trapped in dangerous situations can the pair find justice for Donovan's brother?
Bill Nevitt is such a great narrator and the reason that I am giving this series ago. He has a way of bringing the characters to life and making a story entertaining.

Seismic Crimes

The basic bones of the story I thought was good. However, probably due to the fact I read book 1 prior which gives more insight and depth into the beginnings of Beth and Donovan's relationship, I felt this book was also highly unrealistic. I just find it difficult to believe that they both fell in love within hours, but it wasn't instant. Beth fell in love with a man she thought was a murderer and would kill her, and had to go through some lengths to prove his innocence before declaring her love. Within less than a day they are in a full blown relationship and a few days later living happily together. Aspects of the thriller part was also very unrealistic i.e. a Crime Lord personally trying to kill the couple (instead of sending his henchmen) when he didn't want to get involved with this in the first place, and regardless of how easily he is able to abscond from the law.

The first part of the book seems to focus entirely on the domestic bliss of the couple living together which I found a bit boring, mainly because so much time was spent on this stage when I wanted them to get on with hunting down the killer and finding out what happens with the second disaster. I found the PDA pretty tame, it brought substance to the story especially as they are supposed to be madly in love. The second part of the book focuses on finding the killer, but the disaster only really featured shortly at the end. Overall is was ok. I wish there was more action, thriller and disaster aspects to it.

Not a bad story

I'm not nornally someone who likes to mix genres so was a bit dubious with this one as it mixes romance with crime/thriller, but it did work quite well together.

The romance parts aren't too rmoancy and the thriller aspect is a really good mix of intrigue and thriller.

Overall it was a great vook and very well narrated, I'll be going back to book 1 next to see if i missed anything by listening to this one first.

Very cute!

Full disclosure here; I do NOT like romance books and I never listen to them. However, Bill Nevitt is such a top notch voice actor that I'm thrilled to listen to anything he narrates, so I plunged in! It was actually quite pleasant. The love story aspect was sweet, without being too syrupy! It was realistic attraction between grown ups. The thriller part of the book was also enjoyable. I especially appreciated the fact that Beth was a kick-ass female who's perfectly capable of taking care of herself. She chose to allow Donovan to help her, but it was very clear she was able to function and fight off attackers independently. The ending of Seismic Crimes leaves you hankering after book 3, which I understand is called Tsunami Crimes, (Beth and Donovan have lots of things going for them, unfortunately 'luck' isn't one of them), and as book 2 kept my interest and the third book is also narrated by Bill Nevitt, I think I'll be treating myself to it. I haven't listened to book 1, and I don't feel it impacted on my enjoyment, it was a clear story line, and anyway, it's not narrated by Bill Nevitt so I probably won't bother with it. It was nearly 8 hours of pure escapism, which I'm happy to recommend.

crime and disaster

This listen was a real mixed bag for me. Firstly the story is good and the characters are well written and full. However I felt the story lost is purpose and was overshadowed by the romance between the main characters. Whilst I liked the romance I found the frequent sexual content a bit uncomfortable, I'm all for a good dollop of 50 shades, however whenever the main character describes/looks at/refers to his girlfriend it is always in sexual terms which I found a bit creepy. I am unsure if this feeling is created by the writing or the narration, but I had to fast forward. On the whole I would say this listen was OK with good parts...
