Secret Betrayal

I liked this book more then I thought. It starts of quite quickly and we get to know the characters as they go on their journey to find out who set them up.
My only negative is that I did not like the main female character. I felt she was weak and yet her uncle was someone people did not mess with. I found her personality hard to believe especially with her background.
But other then this it is a good book, with a little romance, mystery and suspense. Loved the twist and turns.

I loved it!

I listened to the audiobook version of 'Secret Betrayal' by C.B. Clark and the narrator was the inimitable Bill Nevitt. This was a fantastic combination. I love Bill's narrations as he's just so much fun and puts so much energy into his work. The voices he used for the characters were perfect and just how I would imagine them to be.

The story was very entertaining with lots of twists and turns. I loved the way that the secrets were gradually revealed as the story went on. It was the perfect blend of intrigue and romance and I was sorry when it ended.

There are some far fetched moments in the book but too much realism would be dull. I read/listen to books to escape so I didn't find those a problem.

I shall look out for more books by C. B. Clark.

An interesting listen

I’ve listened to CB Clark books before so I knew what to expect. I enjoy Bill Nevitt’s narration but his female voices often come off as whiny. That aside, he does a good job.

This book is a thriller with some romance thrown in. There were a few times when credulity was stretched, but other than that it was enjoyable. There were a lot of twists and turns which made me keep listening.

I will definitely keep listening to this combo.

Review

This review is based on the audible book format:
I thoroughly enjoyed this book...I love all kinds of detective and 'who dunnit?' stories and this was exactly that... twists and turns and surprises and just enough cheesy romance (the good kind) to make it an enjoyable read. I had my suspicions about some of the characters but was still surprised with a well thought out plot..
I loved the narrator and thought he did a great job with this book.

New Author to me

Marissa has a secret, her uncle is a crime lord and she has distanced herself for years until one night shes wakes up in a cheap-looking hotel room with no idea how she got there and along comes A.D.A.Scott Bannister after looking round he feels sure he's been set up with a prostitute. When he realizes who the woman is and her connections he decides to use this to his advantage. Things go from bad to worse and then to find out that there is an arrest warrant out for both of them, can they work together? or will they distance themselves from each other? Not heard of the author before but nonetheless a great story great listen and good narrator would certainly recommend.

Great exciting thriller

This book grabs you by the horns and does not let go. It’s a rip roaring thriller in a hunt against time for Marissa and Scott to work our who is setting them up and is her notorious crime boss Uncle involved. Along with the hunt is everything too good to be true about Scott and what secrets is he hiding. You will not be disappointed by this book and the fact it is narrated by the amazing Bill Nevitt just adds to the story however my Alexa for some reason will not play any books narrated by Bill which I still haven’t got to the bottom of lol.

Engaging listen

Likeable characters, a good story arc, a bit of a love story. Add in a couple of twists and some adrenaline and you have a really enjoyable listen.

Good narration, I didn't enjoy the story

Although the narration of this audiobook was good - male voices considerably stronger than the female ones - I did not like the damsel in distress-like main female character. At over 11 hours running time, this is a long book, and the stereotypical roles of the weak, scared, dependent woman juxtaposed with the strong, stoic and emotionally unavailable leading man made the book seem even longer. The plot was ok, but the vocabulary and characters constantly irritated me and the sexist implications were not great.

Thrilling and romantic suspense story

Marissa's uncle is a crime lord and her life is in danger after she gets framed for murder. Scott, an attorney, has spent his life searching for the people responsoble for his parents death. When he meets Marissa under suspicious circumstnces and realises who she is, with his prime suspect being her uncle, he doesnt know if he can trust her.

Scott and Marissa go on a whirlwind adventure trying to prove their innocence, and find out who is responsible for the murders. The story is cleverly written to entice and entertain. The plot unravels with twists and secrets and lies to uncover the final truth. Through all of this, the main characters get romantically close and have to deal with that along with all the thrilling suspense as well!

Bill narrated very well. He was a great fit for the story and had great intonation and passion during the performance. I will definitely listen to more from him!

Not my kind of story

Secret Betrayal
Author: C B Clark
Narrator: Bill Nevitt
Listening Time: 11 Hrs. 20 Min.

Disclaimer: "This Audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost, in exchange for an unbiased honest review."

I always like to preface any reviews I give with this information.
I am a 68 year old female who has been an avid reader since I was around 10 or 11 years old.
I read primarily for pleasure.
I have a great many interests and do a lot of research for personal pleasure and knowledge as well.

I had a really hard time liking this story. I immediately disliked the whiny and fearful female character. I was not overly impressed with the main male character as he seemed to be very good at jumping to the wrong conclusions and it seems to me that an ADA should be able to do better than that.

There are some tricky plot twists that were unexpected and I was pleased that those elements did add to the story as it progressed.

Having said that, I still did not really connect with this story or with the main characters.

I also did not feel like the romance was believable

I finished it but just did not really feel that I had listened to a book/audiobook that was worth the time I had invested in it.

I don't like leaving a negative or neutral review, but this just wasn't for me.

C B Clark is an author I had never had any experience with and I won't be listening to any more work by this author since the book just didn't appeal to me.

Bill Nevitt is a voice actor whose work I have heard before and quite honestly, this was the saving grace in this audiobook.
He has a wonderful grasp of voices and accents and a great range of voices for the characters in this book.

It is not easy for me to say who might enjoy this book/audiobook, since I did not feel a connection with the story or the characters. If you enjoy mystery, murder, mayhem, and romance; you may enjoy it.

Romantic Thriller

I normally do not listen to romance books but have to admit I enjoyed this book due to the suspense with the DA and mobsters with twist and turns. Marissa is a librarian and niece of head mobster and Scott is an assistant DA both are attracted to each other and both mistrusts each other. Scott is after her uncles as he feels he killed his parents and Marissa is tracked down to get to her uncle. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you

Hey, C.B., Educate yourself

Bill Nevitt is a reliably excellent narrator. He is the saving grace of this book.

I'm honestly surprised that C.B. Clark is a woman. Most of this book comes across as material that would fit nicely in the r/menwritingwomen subreddit.

C.B., there is a wealth if information about police procedures. The fact that the professional (?) police detectives are surprised to learn that Marissa is a librarian when they have both her phone and purse - which contains information that would quickly verify her identity. Yet the detective's internal monologue is, "Oh, so she's not a prostitute."

They are also badgering a woman who they KNOW has been drugged, asking her "Why did you kill so-and-so!?" Any information gathered under those circumstances is dubious at best. Nobody worth their salt in the legal justice system would find that confession admissible. I can't believe that anybody as stupid as the characters you're writing could buy their own groceries. Was NOBODY else available for the police force? Did they pull low achievers from the community college?

This is just in the first couple chapters in a 10 hour book.

Readers are intelligent and discerning. Most of us have a rudimentary knowledge of police procedures, investigations, etc. We don't want to read about a-hole police and wilting women. That hardboiled police detective novel went out of fashion around 1970. I shouldn't want to smack ALL the characters in a book at the same time. This is extremely poor writing.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Suspense and Romance

This is a fast paced suspense filled thriller involving an Assistant DA who is framed. Marisa is a strong female who loves her own life separate from her Crime lord uncle. Several twist and turns take us on a wild adventure that Bill Nevitts narration brings to life. Very enjoyable

Who can she trust? Or is she Not to be trusted?

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author. This is an uncomplicated, easy listen. I enjoyed the mystery and how it was revealed piece by piece. The focus is attempted be be switched from character to character as the story progresses. I enjoyed the book, but something kept me from really loving the book. I think I had issues connecting with Scott. Marissa seems to be a strong woman by going against her uncle etc, but there are times she seems uncharacteristically weak. A few things happen that feel out of place. still, I’m glad I listened to this book.

This is the seventh book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Bill Nevitt ) and I have enjoyed each one. His style is between reading and performing the story, yet I still get immersed in the stories he reads. His characters are typically distinct and female voices are done well.

There are no explicit sex scenes, or excessive violence. There is the occasional swearing.

I love it!

Secret Betrayal, my first read/listen from author C.B. Clark. Well-written & enjoyable, I found it very enjoyable. Bill Nevitt’s excellent narration made the 11-hour 20-minute mystery/suspense pass quickly. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. Suspenseful romance

Secret Betrayal is a romantic suspense story by C.B. Clark. Having read a couple of books by this author, I expected an edge-of-the-seat story and was not disappointed. Fast-paced action, several wow I didn't see that coming twists to the plot and of course, a romance kept the interest high. Some things were a bit unrealistic but then that is what fiction is all about, right? I like police drama stories and this one was worth the read. Who could Marissa trust...her crimelord Uncle, Scott, the ADA? I liked how the author revealed Marissa's and Scott's pasts layer by layer, keeping interest high wondering how the situations came about and what would happen next. I listened to a complimentary copy of the audiobook and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own. Bill Nevitt did a great job narrating the story which made for an entertaining listening experience. There are adult language and situations in this book.
