Publisher's Summary

Machinery Technician Third Class Eric Hagen of the US Coast Guard abandons his post out of Jacksonville, Florida, after his whole world is transformed. The streets are teeming with crazed people, possessed by an insatiable appetite for human flesh. He soon learns that these manic people are not what they appear - they are undead. Traveling north in a post-apocalyptic world, Eric leads a team of four to Baltimore, Maryland, in search of his family, and in the process forms a family of his own. The cold winter months provide some relief from the undead, but Eric soon realizes that dangers from within his newly-formed family are just as deadly as the perils outside.

    "Yep!!!"

A Good, Solid zombie story! This is the kind of story where you have lots of action, a good story line to follow, human battle, still food human beings willing to be good and most of all....Lots of Zombie action! to often writers are coming out with all kinds of additives to make their story work, yet they are looking the integrity of a solid enjoyable story. I can accept change but we all know what additives do to us! Yep, you have a new fan Mr. Deyo!
As for your narrator, you too have a new fan...very well don't! I applaud you both!

    "I see an emerging author"

Jason is gonna take you on a trip to zombieland. This story has many points on it. Most important for me was how unexpectedly everything seems to happen, every twist is a surprise! If you are weak on your heart this book is not for you. If it gets you, get your favourite beverage and your sofa. Or a long drive.

Relatable characters, I liked the plot twists, and being a foreigner to English myself I found it really easy to listen. Both merits to the author and narrator. The narrator's reading style is clean, nice clean voice also.

On the other side I would have liked more depth into the main characters.

"A light and fast read for mature audiences only"

The audio book format suits this fast paced and unrelenting story of survival. May be inappropriate for younger listeners. The narrator did a lot to capture the urgency of the moment, as well as differentiate between the characters.

    "Good story, quite riveting!"

Great storyline, had me glued. Had a few inconsistencies but otherwise fantastic. A very intense, gritty story of survival and how human beings can come together in a time of need. I look forward to Jason's future work.

    Any additional comments?

    Winter’s Salvation By Jason Deyo
Feb 2 2017

I actually had the audio book of this, but it is not listed here on Goodreads.
I truly enjoyed this character-driven book. I think the Author Jason Deyo did a fantastic job with the story and the characters.
We follow Eric Hagen from the time he left his post in Jacksonville Fl. From the beginning throughout his travels to his mother’s home in Baltimore Maryland. He traveled with various individuals and groups of people and ended up finding a family he could call his own. Naomi, Samantha a 13 yr old girl & Drew a young boy. They had found a safe haven here and there an one where there was an incident with one of the other scavenging teams, due to a man’s son being disruptive in class, where as he was removed and put to work. Doing crappy jobs to burn off his extra energy, knowing in time he would return back to class and behave much better. Our little group of four had decided prior to the confrontation to head out again to the north had Eric’s family home to check on his parents.
Sometimes it is the hidden dangers within a small group that is the deadliest because when they surface it catches you off guard.
This was a long book with well placed twist and turns, it could have even been broken down into three separate books.
The man that narrated this book did a wonderful job. Jason Deyo used creative problem-solving skills with several real life problems that may occur, I thought it was brilliant to take the trouble maker out of school and putting him to work doing crappy jobs to help him realize that in class was where he wanted to be. That was just one example.
"Excellent Zombie Action!"

I started this book Friday night around 6 pm. Today is Saturday 7pm. This sgould tell you how hard it was to put down.
The author has the ability to get his readers interacting with the characters. I caught myself talking to them and wanting to give a smack a character. Almost immediately you find yourself cheering, grieving and laughing with the characters.
The narrator does a great job with the narration. The characters are distinct and have their own personalities. The narrator easily makes the reader feel as if they aren't just observers but part of the action.
Purchase this book and you will enjoy it.

    Any additional comments?

I am normally not a fan of audiobooks as I find it hard to reach true storybook immersion - but with this novel I was in for a surprise.

First, for the narration. As I said, I'm fairly green to the experience of being read to so this may just be a part of the learning curve. I found the voice of the male characters to sometimes blend too easily with the reader's narrating tone and would often lose dialogue in the process. Fairly minor all in all - otherwise by the end, it was hard to pause my sessions after being so drawn in.

Now to the novel itself. I realize that there are any number of zombie stories - bloody, drooling, oozing products of a genetic mutation or pandemic strain or some other sci-fi-ey excuse. This story circumvents the struggles for cures or answers and drops the reader right into a real human response. The struggle to survive and self-preserve while enduring for the survival of our loved ones. For some characters it's about learning their own worth, for others it's a discovery of what is worth fighting for in this world. The author develops each character to be as deep or shallow as they need to be - slowly unraveling the individuals thread throughout the journey north. Characters who can be truculent and divisive are met by others extending compassion in the face of adversity - a somewhat unexpected expression in the demise of humankind. I believe this story lends a hopeful return to an otherwise dismal situation while retaining the really disturbing and upsetting aspects of a zombie apocalypse. I believe that some readers found the minutiae of the journey to be fluff and unnecessary - but realistically survival is not going to look as epic and sexy as the reader comes to expect in these fantasies. Otherwise, really cool journey and really cool shoutout to the Coast Guard.

All in all - it was awesome!

I thank Mr. Deyo for taking the leap of faith in authoring his first story as it was a great listen/read - and I look forward to the future (or past) tales of his Undead world.
