Summary

In Chicago, someone has been killing practitioners of magic, those incapable of becoming full-fledged wizards. Shockingly, all the evidence points to Harry Dresden's half brother, Thomas, as the murderer. Determined to clear his sibling's name, Harry uncovers a conspiracy within the White Council of Wizards that threatens not only him, but his nearest and dearest, too.

Critic reviews

“What’s not to like about this series?...It takes the best elements of urban fantasy, mixes it with some good old-fashioned noir mystery, tosses in a dash of romance and a lot of high-octane action, shakes, stirs, and serves.” (SF Site)

“A tricky plot complete with against-the-clock pacing, firefights, explosions, and plenty of magic. Longtime series fans as well as newcomers drawn by the SciFi Channel’s TV series based on the novels should find this supernatural mystery a real winner.” (Library Journal)

“What would you get if you crossed Spenser with Merlin? Probably you would come up with someone very like Harry Dresden, wizard, tough guy and star of [the Dresden Files].” (The Washington Times)

Harry Dresden is the best hero ever

I think this is my 4th time reading/listening to this book/series and I still love it. It's masterfully read by Mr Marsters who transports you and carries you along with Harry. You hear his internal commentary, his self doubt, his fear and his wisdom first hand. I find myself trying to be more like Harry in the real world-he is a moral compass to be followed. The story is extremely entertaining in and of itself but those jems of advice and insight that Harry frequently tells us about are all too applicable in the real world. Jim Butcher is a genius and I'm very grateful that he has decided to share this genius with the world via this series. I really hope he finished out the series though. The waiting for each book is torture

Well written, well read

As a female of over 60 who likes real literature, I find these fantasy books very good listening. The prose is well written, the story has internal consistency, the characters develop and have a life, and the narration is absolutely excellent as well as being just right for the story.

Another fantastic ride

having listened to the full series to this point I would be amiss if I did not admit I am addicted.
I listen when driving mostly and find myself craving my journey to and from work and become giddy if I am tasked with a job that means I have to travel to a different site.

The combination of Jim's writing and James' reading is truly a perfect blend.
I cannot recommend a series more than The Dresden Files!!

Wow another fantastic book.

Just really good, fantastically written and performed.

Thank you.

Harry Dresden should be the world's favourite wizard, Potter was good but Dresden is like what might happen to him if, hold on...their both called Harry and were both orphan's.....and their both angry wizard who's dad's were normal............who cares just love these books. Oh I think I know the Gate Keeper is Potter.
