Summary

The Greatcoats - legendary heroes, arbiters of justice...or notorious traitors?

The Greatcoats are travelling magistrates bringing justice to all...or at least they were, before they watched the Dukes impale their King's head on a spike.

Now the land's heroes are reviled as traitors, their Greatcoats in tatters. Facio, Kest and Brasti have been reduced to working as mercenaries, but when they find their employer dead - and are forced to watch as the killer plants evidence framing them for the murder - they realise things are about to get even worse.

For the royal conspiracy that began with overthrowing an idealistic young king is spreading to Rijou, the most corrupt city in the land, and the life of a young girl hangs in the balance.

When every noble is a tyrant and every knight is a thug, the only thing you can really trust is a traitor's blade.

It’s been a while

It’s been a while since anything in the genre has captured my attention this well, thoroughly enjoyed it, will get next in series ASAP. Well read in a lively, clear manner, no lengthy battle scenes, plenty of dialogue, thumbs up from me

Awesome book

So I saw this book on one of the offers that pop up in my emails and decided to give it a try . Generally I read the reviews for a new series/author and buy based on both the description and the reviews and in some cases based on just the narrator If it’s one that I’ve found especially good . This book totally caught me by surprise . It’s exquisitely well written . It’s fast paced , has plenty of humour and action . What really got me though is the author and indeed the narrators ability to make you care about the characters and both what happens to them and how they act . This author is one of those rare individuals with the ability to touch your core with his words . Something I’ve rarely experienced since my days of reading the stories of david gemmell.

I’ve now bought the rest of the series and will review each in turn and keep an eye out for anything else by this author . The narrator is also top notch and is certainly one to keep an eye out for .

Superb

A fantastic book with the perfect narrator for the story. Easy to follow and great characters. Kept me hooked. This book should be the definition they use in the dictionary of audiobook because it's perfect.

What is the purpose of this book?

Very much a narrative mess. So much of it is told, not shown. The main character recalls memories relevant to plot points only moments before they happen. This would not be so bad if character growth was not retroactive; the smell of strawberries is important about 2/3 of the way through the book, but is not at all foreshadowed. If you've read the book, I'll just say this; 'great horses'.

Furthermore, many narrative threads are abandoned part way through the story. A moderately spoiler free example is one of the characters being labeled a 'beserker'. This feels significant, but in most of the book it isn't addressed, or even mentioned or hinted at being a deeper issue.

Finally, none of the fights have any tension. Falcio already tells you the outcome before the fight has begun, and most often either Mary Sues through a fight, or is utterly trounced.

There is too much going on in this book, and it seriously needs an editor to sit down with Castell and figure out what they are trying to say with the story.

Voice actor is good, and is worth mentioning that they have a variety of voices for different characters. Would look up other books they have narrated, such as Prince of Thorns, as they are also enjoyable.

awesome story, great performance

Love this voice actor, perfect accompaniment to this dark, gripping story. A tale that kept me enthralled throughout, awesome ideas filling a gritty world.
Felt very unique and yet also like a classic old timey fairytale.
Loved the neat ending and look forward to reading more

Truly enjoyed this book!

Well written, well narrated and refreshing that the protagonist isn't yet another teenager ignorant to the world, but someone with a few miles on him.
I warmly recommend this book, as I jump eagerly to book 2...

Loving it!

Probably my favourite listen during a month of really good listens!! :)
I love the fights, the gripping story, the twists, the light touch of humour throughout that keeps it a pretty easy listen and to top it off, the narrator does a super job. His main characters are great and easily distinguishable, even the secondary characters have good accents and personalities. Ok, so some of the peripheral characters have familiar sounds, but this doesn’t detract from the performance!
Very well done all round! I’m already 2/3 through book 2! :)

Enjoyable but...

A bit too fast paced for me, from one action scene to another just over did it. Solid story though and great narration.

I liked the idea of the saints and gods a lot, some really great world building.
took me a while to get behind the characters but once I had I really enjoyed and will definitely be listening to the rest of the series.
