Audible Editor Reviews

"Now that was some serious, bleeping fun. For a few hours - amidst the sounds of morphing extraterrestrials, ignited flamethrowers, and the sonic tremble of spaceships overhead - it felt like I had stolen away into the world of The X-Files and been treated to my very own mini-season. Of course, listening to Duchovny and Anderson verbally spar as the iconic pairing of Mulder and Scully is an X-Philes' delight. But, for me, hearing the liquid honey - though sinister - croon of William B. Davis' Cigarette Smoking Man AND the giddy shenanigans of the original Lone Gunmen was worth the price of admission alone. Add to that top-notch sound design and a story that doses out 'Monster of the Week' thrills and 'mytharc' reveals (canonical arguments be damned, this was just too fun), and you have yourself one can't-miss listen for fans." -Doug, Audible Editor

Publisher's Summary

The series that had a generation looking to the sky gets a breathtaking audio reprise in an original full-cast dramatization featuring actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning to voice FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

Based upon the graphic novels by Joe Harris - with creative direction from series creator Chris Carter - and adapted specifically for the audio format by aural auteur Dirk Maggs (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Alien: Out of the Shadows), and directed by William Dufris of AudioComics, Cold Cases marks yet another thrilling addition to the pantheon of X-Files stories. Featuring a mind-blowing and otherworldly soundscape of liquefying aliens, hissing creatures, and humming spacecraft, listeners get to experience the duo's investigations like never before.

Set after the events of The X-Files: I Want to Believe and providing additional backstory to the incidents that pulled Mulder and Scully out of reclusion prior to 2016's miniseries revival, a database breach at FBI headquarters allows an unknown group to access and capitalize on those investigations left unsolved - dubbed cold cases - by the secret department once known as The X-Files. As friends and foes of the agency long thought gone begin to inexplicably reappear, former agents Mulder and Scully come out of anonymity to face a growing conspiracy that involves not only their former department but the US government and forces not of this world.

Here, fans are treated once again to Mulder and Scully's irreplicable chemistry as only the series' leads could deliver, Duchovny's deadpan and cynical aloofness finding its natural counterpoint in Anderson's unwavering intelligence and rigidity. Appearances from series regulars and the actors who made them fan favorites round out this must-listen arc: the gruff, no-BS righteousness of Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi); the distinctive click-puff of the Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis); and the stooge-like hijinks of three beloved conspiracy theorists called the Lone Gunmen (Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood).

Whether you're a believer or a skeptic, find your "I Want to Believe" poster. Break out that makeshift alien stiletto. Grab a pack of Morley cigarettes.

The truth is out there. You just have to listen.

"Already listened to this twice - doesn't improve"

Hmm, thought it was only fair if I listened to this twice before typing my review.

This is the third audio-drama I’ve listened to this year that has involved Dirk Maggs and sadly like Alien: River of Pain, it just isn’t very good.

Stepping away from his usual Directors chair, Dirk adapted the X-files graphic novels by Joe Harris into audio. Though I found these stories stale. With audio the story can take you anywhere, without the budget constraints that affect TV/film production, so I was hoping this would be big, bold and move the story along with energy. Oh and that’s something that was missing in the recording booths.

The biggest frustration I had is with the cast as there are so many instances when they went out of acting mode and just read the script without emotion. Wham. And that’s you jolting out of the story wondering what just happened. It breaks the illusion, the immersiveness of audio. Not sure why the Director didn’t realise how ‘dry’ their performances were.

And what’s with Dirk’s obsession with CB radio chat, just like ‘River of Pain’ there are a lot people saying “Copy That”. Arghhh.

Lastly it was good to hear Laurel Lefkow again, she played Ripley in Alien: Out of the Shadows - still sounding like Sigourney Weaver. She was the narrator in this.

Just didn’t live up to the hype; overall 2 stars

What is it with the Audible review system. If a review is negative it is down voted, but Audible asks “Was this review helpful to you?”. Not whether you agree with it. To me it seems that the system is being manipulated. I’d rather read all positive and negative reviews and judge myself whether to purchase it. Just because I don’t agree with something, doesn’t me that it wasn’t helpful. A review with just some random words, now that’s something to click ‘No’.

"Maybe its me but this was dreadful"
What would have made The X-Files: Cold Cases better?

Better script. The actors are, of course, first class but they sounded wooden, like they were turning up just to get paid. Gillian Anderson especially is an astoundingly good actor and she was the best out of a bad bunch. It's not her finest work. David Duchovny was not good. He came across as bored and his jokes were painful. Generally speaking the acting did get a bit better towards the end.

What could the authors have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Better story line. It was trite and cliched. Needed a more genuine and original Sci-fi story.

Would you be willing to try another one of the narrators’s performances?

    Of course.

What character would you cut from The X-Files: Cold Cases?

The whole storyline I'm afraid. Its more suited to young adult scifi.

    Any additional comments?

Overall a wasted opportunity for what could have been the audiobook of the year.

    "I still believe"

Well I didn't know what to expect with this and when it first started and I realised it was like watching the program without any video I was a little hesitant. However it soon grew on me especially with the performances.

The story does come together a lot clearly towards the end , for a new listener I'm not sure there's anything here to hook them.

    "The Truth Is In Ear..."

Really loved this audiobook. I'm a big fan of the series, used to watch it on the BBC when it first aired in the UK. I thought the audiobook was well produced, good to hear all tge original cast, and some nods to the old storyline (Host for example). Great story and sound. Looking forward to the next audiobook in the series...

I enjoyed it. The acting was a bit dodgy at the start so I'd recommend listening to two chapters before deciding whether or not you like it. The rest was great and I'm looking forward to the next audio book in the series.

"This is amazing. Plz more with the Original Cast!!"
If you could sum up The X-Files: Cold Cases in three words, what would they be?

    Excellent. Awesome. Wonderful.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Mulder and Scully, of course.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. This is my first time.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I laughed and wanted to cry. I was so happy to hear David and Gillian as Mulder and Scully. To hear the Lone Gunmen and Skinner.

    Any additional comments?

My only criticism is not for this but for CC. William is Mulder's son, CC. Come on. Anyway, other than that. This was excellent. Excellent.

    "Brilliant X-File!"

Not the standard audio book. Performed like a radio play, you are completely swept up in the story. This book includes conspiracy and aliens and even the old favorite monster of the week. The chapters are episodes and there are several during the 4hr time frame . I would recommend this to every X-Files fan, and anyone who loves a well told story!

    "Excellent high quality production"
If you could sum up The X-Files: Cold Cases in three words, what would they be?

Aliens, Revelations, Full-circle... Loved it - they brought back some great characters in a classic x-files way. Tied in well to episodes across many seasons. Don't want to spoil anything so I wont say more!

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Mulder - duh

    Which scene was your favorite?

    Lone gunmen @ Arlington

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    The truth will be revealed.

    Any additional comments?

Too short! Kept me wanting more. I hope there's a follow-up production! It was almost like watching one of the best episodes... great to hear most of the original cast =D

"I hope Chris Carter and cast continues book series"

This is a great idea using the original cast to read their parts. The use of sound effects to help tell the story reminds me of the 1950's radio programs. The stories were well written. Between the cast, sound effects and great stories I found myself using much more of my imagination than I had thought I would while listening. I hope there is a series of these in the works!
