My name's Cesar Hawke. I'm a witch working for a division of the government you've never heard about. The world's not what everyone thinks it is - unless you think that our world's a pawn in a game of chess between Heaven and Hell, and riddled with as much magic and wonder as it is with evil. In that case, the world is exactly what you think. My place of employment - the Office of Preternatural Affairs - takes a modern approach to an ages-old problem.
Most witches don't work for police departments, but Michelle isn't your average witch. She's clanless, looking for a warlock who isn't offended by her lack of family connections, and in danger of losing her job if she can't find the eight escaped trolls before they start eating the local residents. Trolls, angry police, and misbehaving spells are the least of her problems. Statues attacking homeowners might be problematic for your average witch, but to Michelle it's another day at the office.
When the road forks, how do you know which path is the right one? Raven Black hunts evildoers for fun, but her vigilante justice isn't the only reason she's hiding from the law. Half vampire, half mage, she's spent years living as a rogue to stay alive. When a Russian shifter offers her a job in his covert organization hunting outlaws, dignity and a respectable career are finally within her grasp.
Since the moment I was ripped from my mother's womb, I've been an outcast among my own kind. The Sidhe might possess magical Gifts, unbelievable wealth, and unfathomable power, but I don't want a thing to do with them. I ran away from their lands in the Highlands of Scotland when I was 11 years old, and I've never looked back. I don't need a clan. I've got my own family of highly skilled thieves who mean more to me than any Sidhe ever could.
When Nell Ingram met skinwalker Jane Yellowrock, she was almost alone in the world, exiled by both choice and fear from the cult she was raised in, defending herself with the magic she drew from her deep connection to the forest that surrounds her. Now, Jane has referred Nell to PsyLED, a Homeland Security agency policing paranormals, and agent Rick LaFleur has shown up at Nell's doorstep.
Let's get one thing straight - Ivy Wilde is not a heroine. In fact she's probably the last witch in the world you'd call if you needed a magical helping hand, regardless of her actual abilities. If it were down to Ivy, she'd spend all day every day on her sofa, where she could watch TV, munch junk food, and talk to her feline familiar to her heart's content. However, when a bureaucratic disaster ends up with Ivy as the victim of a case of mistaken identity, she's yanked very unwillingly into Arcane Branch.
Zoe Lake and Aric Winters have been through it all. From murderous professors to tan vampires and all of the wolves, witches, and sphinxes they can shake Zoe's magic fingers at along the way. They've survived it all. Now, five years after leaving Covenant College, Aric and Zoe are leading a quiet life hidden away from potential enemies and old friends. All of that changes when a familiar face from the past shows up needing help.
When the veil fell, any half-bloods not strong enough to withstand chaos were torn apart. Some, like me and my brother, survived the fall. Most did not.

Ari Katz is intelligent and driven and will make an excellent demon hunter once initiated into the Brotherhood of David. However, this book is about his twin, Nava: a smart-ass, self-cultivated hot mess who is thrilled her brother is stuck with all the chosen one crap. When Nava half-drunkenly interrupts Ari's induction ceremony, she expects to be chastised. What she doesn't expect is to take her brother's place among the until-now all-male demon hunters. Even worse? Her infuriating leader is former rock star Rohan Mitra.
It all started when infected bats bit a small group of humans and created what are now called vampires. Then, the male vampires knocked up some female humans, and the result was a gorgeous race of all male ash - superhuman freaks that had looks to kill. Charlie is the first female ash, aka unicorn of the Hive - the gated compound in Portland that the humans have designated to isolate vampires and ash from society.

Beyond the Veil, Book 1
Devil May Care, Book 2
Darkest Before Dawn, Book 3
Beyond the Veil: Charlie Henderson is living a lie. Her real name is Muse and her attempt at a normal life is about to go up in smoke.
When a half-demon assassin walks into her life, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake, Muse must return to the one man she hoped never to see again and ask for help. The Prince of Greed isn't known for his charity. The price is high, and the cost could tear her apart.
Trapped between the malevolent intentions of a Prince of Hell and an assassin with ulterior motives, Muse must embrace the lure of chaos at her core; the demon inside her, in order to survive.
Devil May Care: Three dead Enforcers in three weeks, their bodies butchered. Muse has seen it before, and when she reads the metal memories in the murder weapon, she sees it all again. Her owner, Damien, is back, and he wants what is rightfully his.
Darkest Before Dawn: When Akil leaves a nine year old half-blood girl on Muse's doorstep, it's not long before the demons come hunting, but this time Muse isn't the target. The Institute, Muse's immortal brother, and the Princes of Hell, all want a piece of the little half-blood. What's so special about Dawn, and why has Akil conveniently disappeared just as Muse needs answers?
I purchased the 3 in 1 as it was such a good offer. The story was set in an interesting world of demons and half demons. If I had purchased them separately I might not have purchased book 3.
The characters lie to each other so much and Muse does not know who to believe. She makes stupid decisions and all the way you wonder is The Prince of Greed good or bad, is he in love or is he lying who can Muse trust.
I might buy another book if they appear in 3 for 2 offer but not otherwise.

I was very impressed with the storyline and performance of the narrator. the first 3 books held me captive and I couldn't stop listening. I can't wait to hear the next one
Quite a thin storyline & narration began quite unenthusiastically. Overall entertaining but predictable & without much depth
Absolutely loved it and can not wait to listen to the rest in the series
Any additional comments?
I just downloaded this to verify all the files are there. The previous version was missing the last 6 chapters or so from the second book, but those files have been added. For anyone who downloaded prior to 11/5/15, check your library. If your version is showing less than 28 hours, 20 minutes total run time, try re-downloading to correct the issue :)

it is a great story but the end of second book is cut off in this package. which sucks cause you need to buy the second book cause the missing part is important to the story. you can guess to some of it but the dialogue really is needed. over all great books.

It would not let me finish the last 4 chapters. It would start at the beginning again each time I tried. Very frustrating.

Would you listen to The Veil Series (Books 1-3): A Muse Urban Fantasy again? Why?
Why, yes - yes I would.
Because it's so good! It's so good I want to cry!
I cannot say the plot is groundbreaking - it is not - but the characters are so complex; layered and complicated... When Muse is facing an enemy or a situation that she wouldn't believably overcome, the author doesn't pull a Deux-Ex Machina to save the day. Oh, no. Muse fails, a lot, and with each new fail my frozen heart was crushed to a point that had me weeping, and I do not weep. Ever. But the truth is the truth, and Pippa DaCosta has no mercy.
Jokes aside, this is an author who isn't afraid to throw her characters into difficulties, and watch them struggle, crack, fail, and try with all they have. This is how a good writer writes, and lately, I haven't seen much of that, anywhere.
I will gladly listen to this again, and again.
Which character – as performed by Hollie Jackson – was your favorite?
The main character - Muse. She is just so incredibly witty, and emotionally expressive! All other characters were well performed but Hollie Jackson utterly succeeded with Muse.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Extreme reactions... Don't talk to me about this book and extreme reactions - it is an emotional torture device! I might love it.
Any additional comments?
In a world suffocated by series with mediocre characters, and plots that are stretched so thin they make one wonder if there is a plot at all, The Veil Series is a luff of fresh air. It is dark, gritty, sensual, carefully constructed, and properly split; tackling a new subject with each book while building up its main plot.
If you like character-driven stories, you will, almost certainly, like this.

What made the experience of listening to The Veil Series (Books 1-3): A Muse Urban Fantasy the most enjoyable?
What I enjoyed most was that the audible format allowed me to listen while driving, riding the train to work - etc. Because it was loaded on my Kindle Fire there was no extra bulk of the book and with the first three books of the series being bundled - I was able to move seamlessly between the books.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the characters that Ms. DaCosta built. I read a lot - probably 10+ books a week - and am a fan of all types of tales. I chose this series because I was trying audibles for the first time - traveling - and the "blurb" seemed interesting. Little did I know that I was going to be transported into a Boston I'd never known existed - or that the veil to the Netherworld could lead to a land of formidable demons, princes and a king! Ms. Da Costa is amazing and I loved that her characters were understandable - relatable, and yet, maintained a sense of balance. Their emotions / lack thereof were credible.
What about Hollie Jackson’s performance did you like?
Initially I had some reserves - for say, the first 5 minutes. After that Ms. Jackson's characterizations of each member of Ms. DaCosta's fantasy series became those characters for me - from Ryder's somewhat country drawl to Dawn's tiny voice - simply a terrific job!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I did have an extreme reaction to the first three books of this series - alternating hopeful for Muse finding someone that could allow her to be "normal/free" to anger when she found that Akil had killed Sam.
Any additional comments?
I'm not usually big on reviewing books - I read too many of them and often they're not special enough to take the time to rate the book. This series is something different - SPECIAL, so if you are on the fence be sure you jump off on the right side and actually purchase/rent this one!

The story is ok and the narrator is awesome but there is a chunk of the book that is not there it skips from one part of the book to the next new book and then refers back to the part that is missing constantly. I really wanted to know what happened and it is actually a huge part of the overall story for the third book. It really needs to be fixed.

I was a little hesitant at first because it is not my normal type of story I go in for Elves and witches and never really got into the demon scene but OMG I love this book series!

Thoroughly enjoyed this series. The narrations were exemplary. Great story line kept me on the edge of my seat

These books are a great read. The world building is solid and consistent. Repetition of info from earlier books is held to a minimum and feels natural. The narrator does an excellent job of bringing all the characters to life with unique voices.
