Publisher's Summary

Will she be the Society's salvation... or its downfall?

The black-ops government agency called Sigma broke Justin Delgado, trained his psionic talent, and turned him into a killer. Then he escaped and joined the Society, an underground resistance movement of psions determined to use their talents to bring Sigma down. Competent, cold, and cruelly efficient, he's the best operative the Society has, a legend among the psions who fight a shadow war against an enemy that owns the courts, the press, and the police. Feared even by his own teammates, hunted by the government, and too damaged to feel anything but clinical rage, he is utterly alone - until he meets Rowan.

When Rowan Price stumbles across Delgado's team in an abandoned house, he is assigned to make contact with her, bring her in, and keep her alive - because Rowan is one of the most powerful psychics the resistance has ever encountered. If the government gets its hands on her, she could very well mean the downfall of the resistance, because nobody, not even Rowan, is quite sure how far her talents extend.

The Society will welcome Rowan, if she can stay alive long enough to join them. Unfortunately, there's a traitor buried in the ranks. If the Society goes down, Rowan is at risk. God alone knows what Delgado will do to keep her safe, because Rowan is fast becoming the only thing in the world he cares about...

".Urban fantasy and black-ops ! Am I in Heaven?"

Every so often I like to try a new author and / or narrator. Sometimes you strike gold and other times hours of your life drift past in grey torpor. With Lilith Saintcrow's The society read by Rayna Cole we're definitely talking about a golden aura permeating my ears and mind.
The narration is near-perfect for that style and the combination of author and narrator produces some powerful moments that will tug at the the heart strings ,make you laugh ,shock you and at one point you may just cry.The world and backstory painted for us is very elaborate.however the detail did leave some room for curiosity and its that curiosity about the shadow war,the Psions,.Justin.Rowan that is driving me crazy now ! Just coming from listening to this book about 3 mins ago I am so so eager for more of this fantastical world Lilith has created I just want to dive in and live there with the books characters ,a trait I think all great audiobooks share.I am an Urban fantasy nut and this ticked all the boxes for me and I lowed the black ops angle ( another literary genre I love ) With the two combined it was truly awesome and sort of reminded me loosely of the Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. The scary thing is ,is that the black ops angle was vey believable in the world we live in.So I'd recommend this book with hesitation. It’s been a thrilling ride so far I cant wait to see what happens next!I requested to review a copy of this audiobook for an honest review .

    "An Awesome Listen"

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher and found it very entertaining. This is the first book in this series, with its interesting characters and suspenseful plot, I'll be listening to the next book. It's like riding a rollercoaster following Rowen's voyage into her new life along with her mentor Delgado. An exciting tale to listen to while travelling.

    "Huge cliffhanger"
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The first half of the book where the characters are being developed felt a little slow. That part could've been made more crisp and fast. And certain phrases are repeated multiple times, which was kind of annoying. The use of weird words that needed me run to urban dictionary was off putting. And the romance felt forced.

Could you see The Society being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

This book ended with a huge cliffhanger, something that tv producers love. So yea, I can see this turning into a tv series.

    Any additional comments?

    "Warning...this is a cliffhanger!"

Although this book has many good key elements for a great paranormal series I was a little let down. The first half; although had good character development and gave a good understanding of her world were people with psychic abilities are hunted by a special branch of the government called Sigma, it was all done at a slow pace. The second half of the book picked up but then we are left with a HUGE cliffhanger in the end.

Other key reasons why this fell short for me is the constant repetition of phrases & feelings and some inconsistencies (readers might not pick up on but I am a military brat so anyone with a military background will notice them).

Rowan's character always had a "calming effect" and Rayna Cole's voice suited that character well and I feel she did a good job with the story.

Will I read/listen to the second book....yes. I feel invested enough in these two to see how the rest of the story unfolds.

I was given this free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

"Narrator Rayna Cole Kept Me Engaged"

The core story is a good one but the application is slow and tedious. I like strong characters, especially ones who overcome horrible circumstances but Rowan is just a whiney over apologetic whimp and it takes her way to long to find her strength. Delgado is supposed to be a strong operative but he becomes whipped & weak- willed way too quickly for my liking. I held hope that the story would pick up but it didn't. Rayna Cole did a magnificent job as narrator and that is the only reason I held on till the end. I do want to see what happens since the cliffhanger ending was the best part of the book so I will read book 2 with an open mind. Story
"Great Narrator, Fast-Paced Story, Mediocre Writing"

The concept of this book was very interesting. I enjoyed the premise, and think the idea of people with psychic abilities is intriguing right off the bat. The author dived right into the story, and the action continued from there at a very fast pace. Maybe a bit too fast at the expense of character development. Too many of the characters were one-dimensional. Despite that, the book kept my interest initially and made me want to find out more about the world the author created. Unfortunately, the further into the story I got, the less interested I became.

This style of writing is too choppy and immature for my taste. The romance seems forced and was distracting and cheesy. The most annoying thing for me was some of the weird choices of words that the author uses like "woo woo," "nocs" (short for binoculars), and other slang, urban dictionary type words. There are strange details that were completely unnecessary and unbelievable, like multiple mentions of broken shoe laces. Mostly, though, the dialog and thoughts were ungainly and unrealistic to the point where I was constantly pulled out of the flow of the story to roll my eyes. I also agree with other reviewers that the cliffhanger was heavy handed and left a bad taste in my mouth.

I really enjoyed the narrator, Rayna Cole, though. I would absolutely seek out another book narrated by her. She redeemed the so-so writing with the emotions in her voice, the excellent handling of multiple voices, and a perfect pace. Her narration is almost entirely why I was able to finish this book despite the awkward writing. Each character had a distinct voice, tone, and feel. The narration is single-handedly responsible for at least one star in my overall rating, maybe more.

"Really good start to a series"
    Any additional comments?

    3.5 stars

Really good start to a series. Very entertaining and enjoyable. Even though the story had my attention from the start it took a bit for me to be completely drawn in. It builds slowly but steadily and the story is constantly moving forward. After things are set up the story really starts to get good and moves at a pretty fast pace. It's an interesting and creative story that will leave you wanting more.

Mystery, a bit of action, suspense, a budding romance, psychic abilities and clandestine agencies all woven into a very enjoyable story.

Great cast of characters. Interesting, unique and likable. Even the secondary characters were interesting.

It does end in a cliffhanger so be prepared. By the time this book was over I wanted more. I'm looking forward to the installment to see where the story goes from here

Rayna Cole is a new narrator for me. It took me a bit to get used to her voice but her narration is really good. Nice voice. Perfect for narrating books. Clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Her voice is a bit deeper than many female narrators which works great for female characters as well as male characters. Her male character voices were really good. Convincing and believable. She was able to bring the characters and the story to life. I would definitely listen to more books she narrates in the future. Very enjoyable.

I was provided this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily provided this review.
Story
"Psi powers draw them closer than just love"
What did you like best about this story?

This is more of a romance read. There is a bit of action and urgency to what the characters do. BUT this is a story told from the characters minds as they meet and get to know and even fall for each other through their actions.

Lilith gently draws us into the world of psi with Rowan and Delgado. There are things happening that make us curious, but also builds the characters as people for us, and in doing this she builds the world through them. We aren't blindly thrown into a new world, we learn it with Rowan.

Okay. All that being said. I found I slipped into their relationship and the growth of it. How they became so intimately entwined emotionally. Wow. I feel that audio really elevated this feeling for me. Lilith with the words and Rayna with the voice, together they were seductive.

What about Rayna Cole’s performance did you like?

The story rotates from Rowan and Delgado's POV, female and male. Rayna does a nice job of giving a deeper tone when Delgado's speaking or when in his mind. It helps separate the characters for us. There is a description of Rowan's voice being a bit on the husky side, and Rayna's voice fits this for me. Rowan is a delicate person in this book. She's lived through some terrible things she's seen. This creates a vulnerable person to be voiced. Rayna voices Rowan in those moments when her hearts breaking and she sounds lost, as Rowan would. Even with Delgado, he's trying to be careful with Rowan but he's also falling for her, so there's a level of concern and thought in his voice that comes through with Rayna's tones. Very powerful emotions portrayed with talent.

    Any additional comments?

*I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

From the moment he sees Rowan for the first time at that abandoned house, he's found her attractive and he's protective of her. The way he comes across as he's doing his job, watching her to find if she's with the government or maybe recruit her for her psi ability, does NOT come out stalker-ish and it very well could have. On the contrary, it comes out more protective. There is a draw there for him but it's gentle in feeling.

I found I liked Delgado and Rowan. Both are good people and do the right thing. Delgado though, he is afraid he'll scare Rowan because her psi is so sensitive and that most people are nervous of him. Why? To think so low of himself has me curious as to what he can do. And we do learn about why Delgado thinks this way.

Oh my. I'm just going to say it. I absolutely LOVE Delgado. He's that damaged character that's trying so hard. I fell in love with him more and more as the story went.

When Delgado gets to explain things to Rowan, I found I really liked how he did it. He was honest with her and didn't hold things back. But he did it with a gentle feel, trying to keep her emotions in mind.

Before the end of this one, I knew I needed the next book. At the end, I NEED the next one. lol.

    "Misleading cover, good story"

I received a free copy of this book at my own request and I am leaving this voluntary review.

SPOILERS AHEAD! I expected this to be a straight romance novel given the cover and synopsis, but I'd probably either call it an urban fantasy with heavy romantic elements or an extended romance book, where you don't get an HEA yet but it'll come in future installments. So I was mildly disappointed about that, but not enough to stop with the series. Delgado was a giant teddy bear and was a very cutely written character, probably similar to Japhrimel from Saintcrow's other series but it's been so long since I read that I can't really remember. Rowan was interesting. It's not often a heroine checks out completely for a good portion of her own story, but she was going through a lot and wanted something to give her time to process the deaths of her best friend and father. My only real issue with her is that she had a touch of Mary Sue-ism. She has all the mental powers and picks up new skills just by seeing it, she has physical training and can take down men easily, her instincts are never wrong, she has a perfect body and hair. Her only flaw is that she is picky about guys and a bit shy. I would have liked Del to be able to match her at the very least.

As I mentioned above, there isn't a resolution to their story yet. I'll hold out full judgment on the series as a whole until the end, but I was happy with this book, I'll probably listen again sometime soon.
