Summary

The first in the series of the classic fantasy tales – The Chronicles of Narnia. Read by the unforgettable Sir Michael Hordern.

“Congratulate me, my dear boy,” said Uncle Andrew, rubbing his hands. “My experiment has succeeded. The little girl’s gone – vanished – right out of this world.”

After Uncle Andrew’s horrible trick, Digory has no choice but to travel over to the Other World in search of poor vanished Polly. Little does he realise that his uncle has unwittingly opened up the doorway to Narnia, a truly magical world, and that their adventures have only just begun…

By the Lion! What a Book!

When I was a kid I used to listen to The Chronicles of Narnia narrated by Sir Michael Hordern during long car journeys with my parents.
When I found that they were available on audible I was both pleased and a little anxious. Worried that if I were to listen to the series again as an adult it might not live up to my childhood memories.

Last week I took the plunge and revisited the first in the series, The Magician's Nephew.
I'm happy to say that this series more than lives up to the rose-tinted memories of yesteryear!
It's not just the narration or the story either, although both are brilliant.
The use of instruments such as lutes and flutes to underscore some of the more poignant moments of the stories is a stroke of genius.
Whether music is being used to depict an entire battle or simply for one moment to give us a greater insight into a character's emotional journey it never out stays it's welcome as always adds something extra to the overall experience.

This is probably what most would call a book for younger readers but I defy any one of any age to give this a listen and not be completely charmed by it.
Give this first book a go and you'll understand why I spent a good portion of my time as a child trying to engage the local farm life in conversation and hunting for witches in the back of my mother's wardrobe.

Lovely story marred by inconsistent narration and strange music

A nice, short story covering the creation of Narnia, and was lovely and nostalgic to revisit this after so many years away. However, the narration is particularly grating, with strange cadences and emphasis placed at unnecessary points. Narration is also broken up by questionable music cues, sometimes alongside the narration which almost drowns out the words themselves.

😍

Older classic style has a wonderful nostalgia and romantic atmosphere. Michael Horden version is the best

Abridged, should have noticed

Disappointed this was abridged. How did I not notice before buying?!
Pretty good to listen to apart from the missing parts, which knowing the book well stood out like sore thumbs to me.
Note to self to double check in future.
Didn’t appreciate distracting music being added randomly, but I suppose some like it.

Magical

The music supports the narration beautifully and Michael Hornden really brings the story to life.

Brilliant

Loved it. Didn't realise I'd enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed reading it but it was brilliant.
