Publisher's Summary

Everyone deserves to get away for a bit. Even the miscreants at St Mary's.

Astonishingly, Dr. Bairstow has declared a holiday. Even more astonishingly - he's paying for it. Needless to say, there are strings attached. They have to record the 1601 performance of Hamlet, with Shakespeare himself in the role of the Ghost. It doesn't go well, of course.

With Dr Bairstow and Mrs Mack turning a simple visit to a street market into a public brawl, Professor Rapson inadvertently stowing away on a vessel bound for the New World, and Shakespeare himself going up in flames, it would seem that Max, of all people, is the only one actually completing the assignment.

    "Brilliant!"

Loved this story. Rip roaring tale full of energy and fun. Great to catch up on what happens after the huge events at the end of book 7 (no spoilers) and, as always, love Markham. Listened to it in one sitting, then immediately went back to the start and listened to it again. Can't believe how Jodi Taylor can cram so much into one short story. Favourite line? Possibly that Matthew is not to be used as a draft excluder. Naughty Jodi to stir up the mud again over Markham's status - trying to avoid spoilers again! Love, love, loved it.

If you could sum up The Great St. Mary's Day Out in three words, what would they be?

    Lighthearted, classic, romp

Who was your favorite character and why?

A certain, Bristolian member of the security section is always my favourite character - becuase, well, the Gods love a trier

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The post romp interview in the directors study is always fun

    Any additional comments?

Zara Ramm is simply the best narrator I have yet heard in 200 audiobooks

    "Possibly my favourite yet!"

I absolutely love Jodi Taylor's Chronicles of St Mary's, but I think this might be my favourite. Zara Ramm is an outstanding narrator who brings every character to life. I don't want to give anything away, but this book was an emotional rollercoaster - laugh out loud one minute, rising tension the next, subsequent blind panic and disbelief. I thoroughly looked forward to my long commute every day to hear the next instalment. I wholeheartedly recommend this series of books.

"Bairstow meets the Bard (sort of)"

I love these short stories, as they allow the characters to be fleshed out further compared to the larger stories. They are fun, light hearted and quite comical. Fortunately the triangle of Max, Markham and Peterson has never fallen into a romantic diatribe and has always been a celebration of friendship. If the series should ever end, I would like Jodi to maybe consider releasing her shorts for Christmas time for an undetermined time afterwards as they just what you need when you have an hour or two.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Wouldn't recommend as the asking price is too high. 1 credit for 22MB. I'm a huge fan of Jodi and Zara but I wouldn't have bought this if I had noticed how very short it is.

    "Okey dokey"

And Ms Taylor does it again! This time it is mayhem in Elizabethan London. As always, I loved it. These characters are well developed and, by now, well loved. The underlying humour with which the telling of this tale is threaded makes it another rounding success for St Mary's.

    "Saint Mary's Meet Shakespeare"
Where does The Great St. Mary's Day Out rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Quite high... this was a lot of fun.

What did you like best about this story?

The circus-like farce in general. Each group of Saint Mary's staff with their own adventures.

Have you listened to any of Zara Ramm’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, she does an excellent job as usual.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This story was pretty light hearted ad I was laughing out loud several times.

    Any additional comments?

This takes place after Lies, Damned Lies, And History and before And The Rest Is History. Contains some spoilers for Lies, Damned Lies, And history. Recommended.

"The Great St Mary's Day Out"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I adore The Chronicles of St Mary's. The St Mary's short stories are great fun but they're not as engaging, satisfying, and adventurous as the novels.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The end - well - I could see it coming. But that's alright too.

Have you listened to any of Zara Ramm’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    I LOVE Zara Ramm's readings.

Was The Great St. Mary's Day Out worth the listening time?

The Great St. Mary's Day Out is a short story and a short listen: Yes, it's worth the time.

    Any additional comments?

I wouldn't start with this short story - but if you like Time Travel, English voices, adventure and tea - this is a fun story.

It's rare that I recommend the audio of a story over the printed book, but Zara Ramm and Jodi Taylor are the perfect pair. I hope these audio books keep going on and on. I can listen to them all day.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Great St. Mary's Day Out to be better than the print version?

The worst thing about Jodi Taylor's Chronicles of St. Mary's is that one inevitably gets all caught up, and THEN WHAT??? I love the characters in this series, the narrator is phenomenal, and I can't get enough. Please, Ms. Taylor - please give us many more!

    "As I Like It"

I think Taylor and the St Mary's world may be at their best in short form. I love the books, but there's something about this condensed format that allows Taylor's wit, characters and her knack for cooking up a truly fine disaster to really shine. And the short stories hone in on one particular historical scenario which also seems to allow a kind of focus that does the stories good.

All told this is one of my favorite St Mary's installments, had me smiling from beginning to end.
