Summary

The year is 2046, and dinosaurs are real.

Time bubbles across the world, many as large as 100 square miles, turn like clockwork, revealing prehistoric landscapes from the Cretaceous Period.

They reveal the Flipside.

Now, 30 years after the first turn, the clockwork is breaking down, as one of the world's powers has decided to exploit the phenomenon for his own gain, possibly destroying everything then and now in the process.

Former head of security for Topside Command Trevon Cash must navigate his way through the chaos of the broken turns and take a team Flipside to try to figure out what is happening.

What Cash and the others don't know is all that waits for them is horror and nightmares - a destroyed base, packs of ravenous carnivores, pterosaurs bent on plucking every human from the ground to be eaten far above, and so much more.

Can Cash and his team stop what is happening?

Or will they end up stuck Flipside forever in a perpetual prehistoric nightmare?

Is anyone sure of anything anymore?

Thirty years before, the first bubble appeared in Wyoming, then others followed worldwide. Some were enormous, up to 100 miles across. At first there was chaos as, within, the earth had turned over revealing a prehistoric scene straight out of Conan Doyle's Lost World. A defensive wall was built around to contain the dinosaurs and soon Topside Industries was founded, a huge money making concern offering tourism possibilities. Although there were inherent dangers in visiting so dangerous a past, Topside had a sterling safety record - until it all went wrong.
Every year, regular as clockwork, the areas would turn, alternating between the current scenery and that of the long distant past, the topside becoming the flip side. Every year, precisely predictable until, thirty years after the that first event, the turn was early, trapping some on the flip side for another year. And when the time came again for the next turn ...

With his usual ability to completely draw a reader into his often crazily immaginative worlds, Jake Bible wastes no time in plunging straight into the action with vividly scary pictures of people trapped in the experience of terror. Then the story itself is developed, the major characters introduced and given personalities and life, then all is once again plunged into almost non stop action until the end. And what amazing action, with unique situations to grip and hold attention. It hurts, too, if any of the protagonists, so alive just minutes earlier, falls in line of duty, as it were, or just because of a silly accident. It's fast, fierce and furious tooth and claw action but still with time for humour and to reflect on life and the world around, as well as playing it's own small part of scrambling the situation.

A fast action book needs a fast talking narrator, and once again Andrew B. Werhlen teams with Mr.Bible to further bring the entire story to life. The text is read at a fast clip, the narrator's voice well modulated, paced, with understanding, to the written words. Each protagonist, male and female, is given appropriate and distinctive voice until the narrator himself seems to fade away leaving only the characters themselves in their unfolding story. Excellent performance.

A complimentary copy of this unusual S.F action thriller was freely gifted to me, at my request, by the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much. I am not usually a fan of man versus dynosaur adventures but certainly make an exception with Flipside. Mr.Bible and Mr.Werhlen between them made this book simply dynamic. I loved it.

Dino action thriller!

I have not listened to anything like this before, normally I steer clear of stories involving any kind of time travel but I did enjoy this one. The action was fast paced and drew me in, the mix of dinosaurs and combat robots making this an interesting mix. The time bubbles were a bit confusing, especially later on but it did not take away from the story in any way. There is an interesting range of characters, some like able, some not but with some nice interactions between them all.

Andrew Wehrlen does a great job of narrating, giving each character a distinctive voice without sounding silly.

I was given this copy to provide a non-biased review and I can honestly say that I am looking forward to the next installment of this series.

Action All The Way

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

I didn't know any of Jake Bible's previous work before listening to The Flipside. He writes action scenes effortlessly and effectively and knows how to deliver a flurry of things happening in a way which feels real and dramatic, and that perhaps is both his strength and weakness.

The Flipside is an exciting story about dinosaurs, killer robots, and survival in the harshest environment of all, our own prehistoric past. I suppose a part of me was expecting another Jurassic Park, and although Spielberg's masterpiece is even mentioned in the book, that's where the two similarities end. Bible chooses action over science, and brawn over brains, and that's a shame because the concept is under-used and could have potentially resulted in a much richer story. There's no real explanation as to why the science in the story works. it just works, and we have to settle for that.

Bible also introduces us to a vast amount of characters in a very short time, and the women, in particular, all tend to blend together making it hard to tell who is who and what their roles are in the story. If I had been reading this instead of listening to it then maybe it would have been easier to give each character a separate voice in my head, but listening to it just results in a jumble of characters all doing very action orientated things very quickly.

I very much enjoyed Andrew B. Wehrlen's narration of the book. Although I did feel he rushed a lot, and I was grateful for the Audible player's ability to slow it down to a more manageable pace. He has the perfect voice to draw you into a story and I will be looking out for more of his narration work in the future.

Overall, if you're looking for a thrilling action-packed blockbuster, then look no further than The Flipside. However, if you're seeking a more thought-provoking time travel story then you might want to look for something else.

Sci-Fi, Military Thriller, Time Travel.. and Dinos

I remember Jake Bible posting a rough sketch of what he thought the cover should look like (I tried to find it so I could share it with you) and it was basically a stick dino, a bubble, and a stick person.  The cover art on this is gorgeous and I'll tip my hat to whoever designed it.  It's a perfect depiction of Bible's world.

The Flipside tells the story of a world where dinosaurs are real and time travel is possible but only in certain "time bubbles".  One company owns the rights to them in the US and is using it for tourism to "the flipside".  Tragedy strikes and a team is left on the other side for a year.  When they were supposed to come back - we find out that things aren't what they seem.

I'm familiar with Bible's world building from his other books but this was really well thought out and beautifully written.  I felt like I understood each person, place, and thing along with why they were there. I like when I don't have to try hard to imagine the world that an author is trying to create.

The characters in this were also awesome.  They were all strong in their own way and each provided some comic relief when you least expected it. I won't go into describing or explaining any characters - just know that you are in for well developed and interesting ones.

Andrew B. Wehrlen did a fantastic job narrating this book (as he's done with other Bible titles) - he gave each character their own voice without overacting each part. I found that listening to this made it immensely more enjoyable than reading it myself would have (I don't have a lot of good voices for characters in my head).

Overall, I thought that The Flipside had it all.  Jurassic Park elements (and even a reference to the movie), a futuristic setting, a "far in the past" setting, strong characters, time travel, and oh yeah, dinos.  Definitely dinos. I requested a copy of this book from the narrator - it has not affected my review in any way.

Very interesting take on time travel and dinosaurs

Jake Bible has done it again. Wow!!! the Flipside is fun roller-coaster of a ride that does not let up until it has completed. The characters were genuine and the action was believable. Seems like it was a start to a new series, if so, I will be along for the ride. The AI Bots were well done and thought out. very cool addition to a story about dinosaurs.

What more can I say about Andrew B Wehrlen that I have not said before. He is an amazing narrator. Everything he does is done with the utmost care and professionalism. His voices are great and diverse. He is able to convey all the emotions the characters feel.

I requested a free review copy of this audiobook and I am leaving a voluntary and honest review.

Dino-Side Dynomite

I loved this story. It reaches out and grabs you like a famished velociraptor in the first five minutes and never lets go. It's exciting, gritty and funny when it needs to be. I was sad when the book ended and there still seemed to be more that could be told about these characters and their situation. I'm hoping there's a Flipside 2 coming soon.

I also loved Andrew Wehrlen's narration even if his voice was sometimes too low pitched to be heard over my car engine. I just turned up the volume and dealt with it. Good pacing and wonderful character work that pulled me into the Flipside and beyond the bubble.

I would definitely recommend for anyone who enjoyed Jurassic Park or Aliens.

Dinos and Time-Travel...What's Not to Like?

This book is another in a long line of action-packed and fun adventures by a great writer. I liked this new take on time-travel and dinosaurs. The characters and their struggles are well-drawn and diverse. The story wraps up nicely while leaving the door open for further adventures.

The narrator does a very good job of telling the story in a natural (non-mechanical) way - and his characterization is top-notch. He is easily able to perform the characters in such a way that it is always clear to tell who is doing the talking. Very nicely done!

I received this audiobook for free from the author or narrator and I give my honest opinion in this review.

Bible's best story yet!

Although I've enjoyed some of Bible's books in the past, this one definitely takes the cake. The Flipside was the kind of book that you never want to end. The premise was interesting, the characters were fun, and there was enough action to keep me on the edge of my seat almost the entire time. I really hope this is the start of a new series for him because I'm not ready to go back topside just yet!

I received a free copy of this audiobook on my request in exchange for an honest review.

Amazing idea, great execution

The blurb had me both intrigued and a bit worried, i figured it would either be cringe-worthy or great. Thankfully it turned out to be great.

The idea of a time bubble appearing that allows people to interact with dinosaurs is not one I've come across before. I thought the execution of the idea was well thought out and realistic (even though time bubbles aren't), the idea that someone would move to capitalize commercially is actually quite logical and realistic. It'a probably also realistic that something is going to go wrong eventually.

In some ways it reminded me of the Jurassic park movies, but there's not a lot of overlap, for the most part it's different.

There's lots of action to be found here, lots of plans, lots of Murphy situations, it was a lot like reading an action movie with better characters (who actually wear sensible clothes).

All in all, it was a really enjoyable book, including the narration. The character voices are excellent, including the AI and the delivery changes to match the changing moods and tones of the book.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

A fantastic example of this genre

The Flipside.. When you pick up a Dino novel it can range from abysmal up to a great read - this one is a fantastic - really top class in the genre. I haven't read the first in the series ( but I'm going to soon ) The book is full of action, fast paced and the plot is easy to pick up and follow.
Andrew B. Wehrlen's voice and narration is well suited to this kind of action book.
I was given a free copy of this audiobook at my own request, and voluntarily leave this review.
Highly recommend.
