Publisher's Summary

An expedition of groundlings from the Empire of Kish have traveled through the Three Worlds to the Indigo Cloud court of the Raksura, shape-shifting creatures of flight that live in large family groups. The groundlings have found a sealed ancient city at the edge of the shallow seas, near the deeps of the impassable Ocean. They believe it to be the last home of their ancestors and ask for help getting inside. But the Raksura fear it was built by their own distant ancestors, the Forerunners, and the last sealed Forerunner city they encountered was a prison for an unstoppable evil.

Prior to the groundlings' arrival, the Indigo Cloud court had been plagued by visions of a disaster that could destroy all the courts in the Reaches. Now, the court's mentors believe the ancient city is connected to the foretold danger. A small group of warriors, including consort Moon, an orphan new to the colony and the Raksura's idea of family, and sister queen Jade, agree to go with the groundling expedition to investigate. But the predatory Fell have found the city too, and in the race to keep the danger contained, the Raksura may be the ones who inadvertently release it.

The Edge of Worlds, from celebrated fantasy author Martha Wells, returns to the fascinating world of The Cloud Roads for the first book in a new series of strange lands, uncanny beings, dead cities, and ancient danger.

    "More action and surprises"

The Raksura get more interesting and their story gets more compelling than ever. Wells continues to develop the characters and Kipiniak continues to hold me spellbound. I’m just a little disappointed at the ending of this book. Of course I want a next book, but the prior stories gave a more satisfying ending. This one feels almost like it ended mid sentence.

"Great story and series. But. . ."
What made the experience of listening to The Edge of Worlds the most enjoyable?

The story is really well narrated with Kipiniak giving great voices to the characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Stone, the aging only gets better in their world. Love that.

Have you listened to any of Christopher Kipiniak’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This performance is well on par with the rest of the series. Brilliantly done.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Had an extreme reaction at the end. One of disappointment as the book just abruptly stopped.

    "awesome as expected"

both the story and the performance lived up to what I have come to expect of this team. If you haven't been following the series start with The Cloud Roads. If you have been you know what to expect. Either way you are in for a treat!

"this was only "okay" for me"

I very much looked forward to and awaited this next installment. It left me wanting and somewhat left me hanging. I will read or listen to whatever comes next, but with far less excitement.
Perhaps my initial excitement for this series was fueled by my fascination with the uniqueness of the species, and now that it's so well established it will take a lot more to further excite me? I'll have to read other's reviews and see if other's are still in love with the story, or if they also find their interests waning.

    "Unexpected, Intricate and Satisfying"

The story just keeps getting better! the entire court seems to be maturing and finding their own way, both as individuals and as a court. I liked the young half fell queen. It was heartbreaking to hear how confused and vulnerable she felt. I can't wait to see what happens next.

I loved this book. It was another excellent adventure following Jade and Moon. Unfortunately, we basically stopped in the middle of an adventure and I have no idea when the next book is due. Extremely frustrating!
