Summary

From the international best-selling author of The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant comes an extensive and all original new fantasy novella.

Augur's Gambit is a tight and action-filled novella of more than 40,000 words. A novella with all the rich world building and acute characterisation that listeners have come to expect from the man who reinvigorated the whole genre in the 1980s and went on to write one of fantasy's landmark series.

Revelling in the sense of freedom that comes from writing a new creation after the massive, controlled effort of the 10-book epic of the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, this is a novella that will both delight existing fans and win new listeners for Donaldson's uniquely rich and intelligent fantasies.

I Still Can't Find The Magic

When I was younger I worked my way through the Thomas Covenant books. I was full of admiration for them but never truly enjoyed them as much as many other books. They never really fired my imagination and while impressive they were hard work for me.

I thought it might be interesting to use this opportunity to see what he was up to more recently. I'll confess I didn't get very far through this and as notes I was never a great Donaldson fan so maybe my opinion doesn't count for much here.

Unfortunately this just felt like a grind and Kevin Orton's narration is very steady which didn't help the dry text within.

So, not for me but maybe those more in tune with this author will find more interest in this one too.

Avoid

As a die hard fan, I bought this in the belief that I'd enjoy it. Unfortunately, it didn't engage me at all and became background noise. I'm a third of the way through and haven't heard the word "chagrin" yet, I'm sure it's just a matter of time
