Publisher's Summary

Master Sergeant Gant Maker was a highly decorated and well-respected marine - until his last mission left him as the sole survivor of an encounter with a vicious race called the Vacra. Served up as a scapegoat and drummed out of the military, he has since lived a life of seclusion with only an adopted alien as a companion.

Now the Vacra have returned. As the only person to have ever faced them and survived, Maker is reinstated in the corps and given the onerous task of finding this enemy on a world located at the edge of known space. Assisting him is an unlikely band of military rejects, including a blind sharpshooter, an unstable psychic, and a genetically engineered killing machine who refuses to fight.

Given that the Vacra have superior weapons and technology, Maker recognizes that his team is at a distinct disadvantage. But marines are nothing if not resourceful, and Maker has an audacious plan that just may level the playing field - if it doesn't get them all killed.

    "I want book two."

“I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.”
I said yes to reviewing this because I can never get enough really good, military style, Science Fiction stories, and I had never read anything by this author,so thought it worth trying. I am so glad I did, it was a wonderful story and I hated having to pause it to let the dog out for her business. I really liked the realistic feel to the military aspects and the aliens were all well thought out. In fact after Maker my favourite Character was his alien sidekick.
I am definitely adding Kevin Hardman to my future autobuys. And as for the narrator, I'm off to see what else he's done as I truly love his style and all the distinctive Character voices he does.
I truly hope that there is a book two coming out in audio soon as I would love to revisit with all the Characters and enjoy their adventures.

    "A brilliant narrator and story!"
What did you like best about this story?

I liked everything about this story. I love Sci fi so I thought I'll give the book a go since I have not read/listened to anything by this author. I am so glad that I did! I was hooked from the beginning.

It was slow to begin with, as there was no action, however this did not put me off. Actually the revise happened, I wanted to hear what was going to happen next.

There were twists in the book that I was not expecting. Yes there were one or two holes in the story however this did not put me off.

My favorite character has to be sergeant maker. I found him to be funny at times, loyal, courageous and intelligent.

Would recommend this book to those who love scifi with action/adventure.

What does Mikael Naramore bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The narrator is one of the best that I have listened to. He suited this book really well. He bought out the characters, I felt I was listening to different people. I couldn't stop listening to this story. I felt it went quite quickly. I shall be listening to this narrator in the future.

"Worth a Listen. Is there a sequel?"

    Story and Plot
Kevin Hardman does a good job the story is well written, well paced, the characters reactions are believable and the events are interesting. Never was I waiting for the book to get on with it or unclear about what was going on.

The story moved on and as things happen we find out more about what is going on. Even the things that are surprising feel like they fit and were true before we find out about them and not just pulled from a hat.

With out spoiling anything this could be the start of an epic series of books. it does a great job introducing the basics of the setting, the events, characters and foes. It feels like it would make a great pilot for an TV show or film.

    Cast
An main group is an interesting cast with mixed backgrounds, personalities. This group of characters have potential I would like to have more opportunities to see them interacting. if you like Science Fiction books about a small military team of misfits and odd balls you should be more than happy with them.

    Narration
As with all good narrators Mikael Naramore portrays the characters with distinct voices lending them emotion and motivation enhancing the story beyond the mere written words. I would be happy to listen to more books with the same narrator.

    Summery
Worth giving a go. I am more than happy with the hours I spent listing to this book and if there was a sequel out right now I would be listening to in now instead of writing this.

    "Struggling"

Well, being as kind as I can be, I found this a pretty ridiculous story, especially when lives are being save; people rescued, but don’t let that get in the way of a court marshall for doing it! And, it gives a whole new meaning to love thy neighbour.

No, I doubt I will want to follow this; too ridiculous for words.

    "Entertaining"

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was really entertaining. I was compelled to read it in one sitting which is unusual for me on an audiobook of this length. I loved the interaction between the main character and his crew.
The narrator was slightly slow and he mispronounced a couple words, but this was easily looked over (and listened to on 2x speed) as he characterised so well.

    "An Excellent Start"

A duty hardened Sargent abandoned by those who he trusted and served ,along with an unusual alien companion are tasked with a mission which may be the redemption he is looking for. Along with the usual skilled misfits his job is to track down a unusual alien species which may be a grave threat to humanity.
The story is quite slow to start and mainly involves lots of background and scene setting but when it comes in soon makes up for it.
The story its self has some nice twists and is of a good length to get your teeth into, narration itself is as always excellent by mikael and helps character and story flow nicely.
At the end i did find myself ready to jump into the next story which is always a great sign of a job well done.
This audio was given to me in exchange for an honest review and as such is my own opinion.

If you like fast paced, hard core military science fiction then you will like this book and as a bonus the lead character has an out of this world pet.
It is a good listen, did not want to turn it off when work ended. Narrator does a great job conveying emotions of the characters
"Goood Story with Legs"

Promising beginning to a series, with great narration. Once one gets past the obligatory suspension of belief for the premise, the book does what it's supposed to - it entertains. There's no heavy lifting required to follow the plot, and has a sufficient number of twists to keep the listener wanting more. Escapism listening at it's best!

    "Good start to a series"
    Any additional comments?

    3.5 stars

Good start to a series. This was an entertaining, engaging and enjoyable book. It pulled me in immediately and kept my attention until the end. Classic Military science fiction with a great cast of characters and an entertaining story.
.
The synopsis gives you a clear overview of the story. Action, suspense, aliens, mystery, a bit of humor, betrayal and political conspiracies.

Once a Marine always a Marine no matter where or when. Master Sargent Grant Maker was cast aside when the Military needed a fall guy. An old enemy has returned, they need his help and have reinstated as well as promoted him. He is still considered an outcast, disliked by most and they are not happy that he's back. Too bad for them. He has a job to do and no one is going to stand in his way. First he needs to put together his team. Instead of choosing a team filled with an elite fighting force his team is made up of other military rejects who have been cast aside. All who have had a problem adjusting to life in the service. They do however each have a skill that Maker wants on his team. How can you not root for a group of military misfits

Mikael Naramore did a great job with the narration. Nice voice easy to listen to for long periods of time. Clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Really good character voices. He didn't just sound like he was reading a book, his tone and inflection when needed in different parts of the story was perfect. He brought the characters and the story to life. Very enjoyable.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher
"I wanted to like this book so much."
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Some of the description feels like it was pulled from an old classic. Use of antiquated description and words threw me out of the story.

The story itself was difficult for me to follow. I struggled throughout.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Spend less time explaining things. It seemed like every time a character did something the narrator went into a tangent explanation of backstory for why the character reacted the way he/she did. Much of that backstory could have been more naturally woven into the story, dialogue, or just realize that most people who read science fiction will fill in the gaps.

What about Mikael Naramore’s performance did you like?

The narrator did a fine job. I would have liked it better if the characters had more unique voices.

Did Terminus inspire you to do anything?

    No.
