Publisher's Summary

In a time when magic rules the sea, she only trusts her sword.

Abbey has always been an outsider in Holdgate. While the people of her adopted city dominate the seas with their weather-controlling storm magic, she prefers the work in her father's blacksmith shop - besting any foolish enough to question her skills with a sword.

But when her father is falsely accused of murder, she has to sneak aboard a stormship and take to the seas in a quest to clear his name.

Teaming up with a young storm mage and a no-nonsense Captain, Abbey sets off on a swashbuckling adventure.

She'll soon learn that the legendary Storm Raiders - a terrifying group of seafaring pirates - are all too real.

Set on the foundation laid by the Kurtherian Gambit series, Storm Raiders tells an entirely new story in the Age of Magic - and of the heroes and villains who battle for control of its destiny.

    "I want MORE"

I love this story. You get to know enough about the characters without getting bored. The story keeps moving forwards with a few predictable and many more surprise turns. It took me about 20 min of listening to get hooked but after that I found myself listening as often as I could. There is some mature language (swears) and I would not recommend this book to be listened to around young children. I found the reader to be clear and her performance really added to the novel. This is a book I will listen to at least twice. Maybe more. Cannot wait to get the next book.

    Story
    "Magic, Pirates, and Swordfights"

Storm Raiders: Age of Magic begins with the end of technology on earth. Everything has changed where magic exists. Abby and her father, Benjamin have moved to live in Holdgate and always been an outsider. The only friend that Abby has was Dustin. Since Dustin entered into his apprenticeship as a Storm Caller, he has made himself scarce to Abby.

When her father is accused of murder, Abby was going to prove her father's innocent. Dustin feeling bad for the way he has abandoned and treated Abby was willing to help her to make up his absence to her. What both discovered is that there is something sinister going down and it is bigger than her father's being framed for murder.

I love, love how the story portrayed Abby and Dustin's relationship. Even thought they are young adults, they have more growing to do and much to learn. They bickered like teenagers and from time to time, have a bit of a swagger before realizing that they need to rely on each other and the crew of Foggy Day to stop the storm raiders and traitors within Holdgates.

Storm Raiders has a very good start for A Kurtherian Gambit Series. I definitely would follow this series just to see Abby and Dustin's characters develop and if they can save their world from the storm raiders.

The narrator, Gabra Zackman does a wonderful performance of female and male voices. I couldn't tell the difference because each of the voices made the characters unique and each of the characters stands out on their own.

I was given the audiobook by the Audiobook Access. I have volunteered to write an unbiased review for the book. I was not compensated or influenced in any way in writing my review.

"A great magical adventure on the sea"
Would you listen to Storm Raiders: Age of Magic: A Kurtherian Gambit Series again? Why?

Yes, it was a compelling read and great for commuting.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Storm Raiders: Age of Magic: A Kurtherian Gambit Series?

I liked when Dustin and Abby discovered the full scope of their powers.

Have you listened to any of Gabra Zackman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've never listened to this narrator before.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have loved to listen to Storm Raiders all in one sitting but my life is such that I never have blocks of time like that.

    Any additional comments?

I did not realize that Storm Raiders was part of a series until I listened to the author's notes. Obviously, it works well as a standalone. The story focuses on the city of Holdgate where some of the people are specially trained in magic to control the seas. Abby is the blacksmith's daughter and an outsider. Dustin is a young storm mage who has just graduated. They learn of a horrifying conspiracy and must fight against people they formerly revered. I really liked the pacing, action, the ships and the magical aspects. My favorite character was Abby who could seriously kick some butt, and I also really liked Sid and Captain Roy. There is a good twist with one of the villains at the end, leaving room for more adventures, which I'd love to listen to.
The only caveat I have is that there is a lot of swearing. Personally, I don't care, and have no issue with this, but this puts it out of reach of middle graders and younger listeners.

    "Amazing!!!"

I loved all the action and intrigue. How did I not know about The Kurtherian Gambit Universe!

Storm Raiders is a fantastic stand alone story that is also book one in the Storms of Magic series. The authors pulled me in with their vibrant descriptions and the narrator brought it all to life.

I can't wait to check out the rest of the books is the series and the Kurtherian Gambit Universe!

    Story
"Entertaining sword & sorcery adventure for teens"

The female narrator is okay. She has a pleasant low voice with excellent inflection, emphasis, and pronunciation. She is great at pacing, especially during action scenes. However, it annoyed me that she made all of the older male characters sound almost exactly the same. What is worse, randomly at the beginning of countless paragraphs, she sounds like a flat male robot for half a sentence and then turns her voice into her appropriate regular female voice. This happened way too often during the midsection of the audiobook. She was really good at the voices of the two main characters, a male and female each in their upper teens.

This is a sword and sorcery fantasy novel that is suitable for teens. There is mild to moderate violence involved but absolutely no sexual content. The book itself is nicely exciting, and I liked the version of magic in the story. I love the origin story idea in the prologue: like Anne McCaffrey's Pern world or Terry Brooks' books, the story takes place in the far future when humanity has regressed to a medieval European level of technology. In this future Earth, an apocalypse of madness and genetic mutations reduced the human population, and the survivors' mutations are called magic. The people no longer know humanity's history, and the small groups of people only have myths and legends. In this world, we follow two young people, Abbie and Dustin, who are approximately 19 years old. They were childhood friends but then grew apart. The young lady is generous, admirable, and likeable, but sometimes she is too quick to reach for her sword. The young man is overly arrogant and takes too long to get over it.

My main problem with the writing is that the book is a little too stupid. The writers mildly underestimate the intelligence of the reader. I figured out just about everything before the characters did. Sometimes I want plot revelations to be just as surprising to me as it is to the characters. Overall, the writing was decent.

    "A M A Z I N G !!!"
Would you listen to Storm Raiders: Age of Magic: A Kurtherian Gambit Series again? Why?

First of all I should say that I received this product for free in exchange for an honest review. I didn't know what to expect, I really like Fantasy Books, Vampires, WereWorlves and Magic of course but this one is by far one of the best I've read in some time.
Excellent plot, from the very beginning, excellent narration that made the book far more interesting and personally I wished I could have listened to it all in one day but that was not possible (for me, for others it could be easily). A Viking like, Storm Magic Riders, Abbey at first (my favorite) and everyone else around her make the story awesome and exciting!
Thank you very much for this book! I loved Gabra Zackman, her voice and the way she moves around the characters.

    Story
"I need more bada$$ books like this in my life!"

Note: This series is part of a much bigger series and is technically Book 59 of The Kurtherian Gambit Universe. This book works just fine as a stand alone.

This was the book of badassery I needed and didn’t even knew existed until a few weeks ago. Perhaps I’ve been living under a rock. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale. The characters were fun, the plot was full of action, and the world building drew me in completely.

Abbey is my favorite character. She’s been working in her dad’s blacksmithery all her life and playing with sharp pointy things since she could stand. She’s a full on action hero in this book but she’s also NOT a cliched broken character that needs to find redemption or her place in life. She comes from a loving single-parent home and has self-confidence.

Sid was my second favorite character. She’s a warrior on board the ship that Abbey sneaks onto after her dad is falsely accused of murder. She’s bald headed and swings two swords like nobody’s business. She’s also a great commander in battle. Such a practical woman! Then there’s Dustin, who took longer to grow on me. He’s just recently gotten his cloak and staff and is officially now a Storm Caller. Yay Dustin! Dustin initially is a little standoffish to Abbey but he comes around, especially after Abbey saves his life a time or two.

Benjamin, Abbey’s dad, has a past that adds some mystery to the mix. He also has a special staff that is a bit of magictech from his hometown of Arkadia. Tor and Dallia are the foremost Storm Captain and Storm Caller of Holdgate. They sail the Thunderclap and they and their crew are always treated as heroes when they return to port.

The plot has these Viking-like reavers that the Storm ships are suppose to repel, protecting Holdgate and nearby settlements. However, Abbey and Dustin find out that not all is on the up and up on their first trip out. Once I learned the full extent of it, I briefly wondered how such a secret was kept with perhaps as many as 300 Holdgate citizens involved. Later we find out that certain people have been suspicious that something was afoot but hadn’t put it all together yet. Plus, you need a very strong case to take down the instigators.

They story was well paced bouncing between quieter moments where someone is learning a bit of magic or have a useful conversation and bigger moments where buildings are on fire and juiced up warriors are trying to take your head! Plenty of snarky comments are tossed around, making me laugh out loud at times. There’s a real sense of camaraderie among the main characters.

All told, this was a delight. It has the epic fantasy feel to it while being a book you can listen to in a day. This tale ended well, answering most of the questions presented but leaving just enough open for the sequel. I’m ready for Book 2!

I received a free copy of this book.

The Narration: Gabra Zackman was great for this book. She was the perfect Abbey, pulling off the snark and Abbey’s emotions with ease. Her male voices were all distinct and sounded like men. I love her calm, collected voice for Sid even in the heat of battle. Zackman’s narration really added to suspense and action. Awesome narration all around.

    "Fantasy at it's best!"
If you could sum up Storm Raiders: Age of Magic: A Kurtherian Gambit Series in three words, what would they be?

    Magic, mayhem and fun!

What did you like best about this story?

I really enjoyed the use of magic as a tool as often as a weapon. The authors take on magic use to aid in moving ships, forging weapons and combat tactics was a nice change from the typical stories where they just hurled magic at each other.

Which character – as performed by Gabra Zackman – was your favorite?

Abbey - smart and determined. I think it was a combination of the authors wonderful writing and the narrator giving strength and confidence to voice of Abbey. It makes you root for her and want to see her succeed.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely! The pace was wonderful and each chapter rolled into the next making you want to stay and listen the next chapter, then the next, right to the end.

    Any additional comments?

It reminded me of many of the high fantasy stories I read from my youth. Right on par with David Eddings, Terry Brooks and many of the D&D titles. Great story of magic, deception, and plots within plots make this a truly enjoyable story. Gabra Zackman's narration was smooth and entertaining!
