Publisher's Summary

Lexi Jardine may be a thief, but she's not stupid. When a crooked fireshaper wants her to steal a ring from the boss of his order, she knows it's a one-way ticket to sleeping with the fishes. Her answer is to drop off the face of the earth.

Safely hidden in a quiet seaside town, she just needs to keep her head down and pretend to be a regular human. Since her only magical ability is the power to control animals, that should be easy, right?

Then a new fireshaper shows up in town. He's hot as hell but oddly hostile. With his suspicious eyes watching her every move, her safe haven starts feeling more like a trap. When her best friend disappears, Lexi knows the time for hiding is over. Though the fireshapers are more powerful, Lexi's not one to abandon a friend - but it will take everything she's got to save them both from the flames.

    Story
"Good story, but narration could use some work"

The story is great and I'm waiting on the next one, eagerly. It's a little obvious with what is going on, but it's different and I'm interested in where the story is going.

The narrator is irritating. First, where ever in the world this story is set, it is not in America, or any alternative of it. There are phrases, and words used that are obviously not American, yet the narrator uses an American accent. It should be something like English, or something, but not American.

Second, the word Apollo is mispronounced as A-PO-lo all the way through the book. Explain to me, please, what adult person doesn't know how to pronounce Apollo. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but if speaking is your job, you should know how to pronounce everyday words, like say, the Greek god of the sun... Apollo.

Other than the irritating narrative quirks though, it's good. If you can overlook those things, then the listen won't be too bad. And like I said, the story is worth the cringe.

Looking forward to the next one. I really want to know why she doesn't remember who she is. I mean, the clues are not subtle.

    "Pretty good"

This is a pretty good story. I enjoyed the characters and the world created. The story started out really good but fell apart at the end. I'll read the next one because I really liked the characters.

    Story
"It has a little something, but not enough"

There was something engaging, perhaps the potential to develop the characters, a little extra mystery about the protagonist...But three things made this an especially unrewarding listen for me. A basic rule of writing is "show me, don't tell me" and the author often slips into the superficial "tell me" mode. Second, a good editor might have helped the author eliminate frequent repetition of phrases and sentiments. Last, the narrator's nearly constant mispronunciation of Apollo's name, as A-PO-lo (like the pony) was seriously distracting. It felt like a rush job all around.
