Summary
Defeated, crushed, and driven almost to extinction, the remnants of the human race is trapped on a planet that is constantly attacked by mysterious alien starfighters.
Spensa, a teenage girl living among them, longs to be a pilot. When she discovers the wreckage of an ancient ship, she realizes this dream might be possible - assuming she can repair the ship, navigate flight school, and (perhaps most importantly) persuade the strange machine to help her.
Because this ship, uniquely, appears to have a soul.

Excellent for Adult and Teenagers alike
I read / listened to this book first (using the Kindle and audible feature) and found it engaging and funny. The characters were good, and although it was clearly aimed at the younger listener, it was very entertaining to listen to.
My 12 and 14 year olds then listened to it and thought it was the best book that they have listened to / read. They are both looking forward to the next in the series.
For me I need more Mistborn novels but this is a great series too.

applauded x-genre success
Brandon S has written some phenomenal fantasy with engaging and typical heroes we all know and love him for e.g. oathbringer.
this sci fi offering is as engaging as his fantasy and I lost sleep to this story being a real page Turnee; egging me on... ĺike the Robert Heinlein statahip tròopers read, this is a great sci fi novel, absorbing and with a distinct underdog / lower class heroine overcoming all odds whilst growing and taking risks. not the most surprising ending, but a darn good listen and narration, although listen out for the Yorkshire accent in the second third!
thoroughly enjoyable, and best sci fi listen of 2018 (as I only got round to 'reading' it in 2019)
well worth a listen!

Fun
This book should appeal to people that enjoyed Expedition Force, Hunger Games and Enders Game. It has bits in common with all these books and is sometimes a little too close to these books. The style is more sci-fi fantasy rather than pure sci-fi. The book is fun and the narration is amazing.

Ok but weak ending
Book was fine, albeit a bit childish. The end was a bit inconclusive and took a long time in coming. I quite enjoyed it but would never read it again.

Such fun story
Had so much fun while listening. Main characters are so funny. Lector performance really did them justice. Highly recommend.

Generally good but not amazing
Brandon Sanderson has written some amazing and some average books but I always love the different topics he covers. This one comes out as better than average but not amazing. The topic is a bit sci-fi but written in a fantasy way with more description than the average for a sci-fi book. It’s perhaps a little childish with the protagonist listed as 17 but acting much more 14-15 in my opinion but I didn’t dislike the protagonist or side characters. Still I enjoyed the audiobook and the topic. The performance of the audiobook was fairly good with maybe the more Asian style accents a little questionable but overall not too bad and I very much enjoyed the battles in particular. I’ll definitely get the next in the series and see how it goes as I’m still into the plot.
