Summary

La narcheska Elliania a quitté la cour de Castelcerf avec ses hommes pour retourner sur ses îles d'outre-mer. Dans quelques mois, le prince Devoir la rejoindra pour y affronter un dragon, et tenir ainsi sa promesse. FitzChevalerie, l'ancien assassin royal, dispose de ce laps de temps pour parvenir à créer autour de Devoir un clan d'artiseurs qui devra le protéger lors de ce voyage. Mais les candidats sont rares, et l'attention de Fitz est bientôt requise ailleurs : les Pie continuent de mettre à mal l'action politique de la reine Kettricken en faveur des Vifiers.
