Publisher's Summary

War rages between the Confederation and the Union. Shattered fleets watch each other warily across a war-torn frontier. Both sides are licking their wounds, gathering strength to continue the fight.

Captain Tyler Barron and the crew of Dauntless are finally enjoying the rest they've earned while their aging battleship, Dauntless, gets the repairs and refit it desperately needs. But their respite will be short-lived. In the Badlands, deep in the haunted vastness of pre-Cataclysmic space, a new discovery threatens to upset the balance of power. Orbiting a world in a distant system is an ancient battleship, vastly larger and enormously more advanced than anything possessed by the contending powers...and the Union has already sent forces to seize it. The Confederation has no ships close enough to intervene, to get there before the enemy...none save Dauntless.

Barron and his crew must race across the Badlands, find the ancient artifact, and somehow hold it, keep the Union forces from taking it, until reinforcements arrive. They will be outnumbered and outgunned, but there can be no retreat. Not this time. Nothing less than the fate of all human-inhabited space is at stake.

If the Confederation is able to rediscover the technology of the ancients, it will be safe for generations to come, its defensive forces untouchable by its enemies. But if the Union gets there first, if it can adapt the incredible power of mankind's lost technology, it will gain the power to enslave all humanity.

This fight isn't for territory. It isn't for position or tactical advantage. It is for the future.

I thought space was a big place? But still it’s a good yarn that I have to listen to, so onto the next book.

    "Addictive"

One of the good ones. If you like all action sci-fi, then this is the book for you as it follows on in the same vein as the previous two books. This is building to a great series that allows you to connect with the characters.

Good narration helps immensely, which adds to the success of any book.

    "Good story great series"

Love Jay Allan books and Jeffrey Kafer could read the phone book and make it sound good. The first two books were better but it's still a great series and I can't wait for #4.

"Awesome! Some of Jay Allan's best work"

I don't know if it's Mr Kafer, the writing or a combination of both but this is def one of my go to series. There are a few series that I actually pre order and this is one of them...

With that said I really want to see more exploration of ancient tech and some interactions with the Alliance!

    Keep them coming...

"This book in the series is sort of slacking but..."

Even though I thought the concept was good in this book as being something different, in the end, he just could not bring it all together in this book. It was entertaining. Did the fighter pilots and bomber pilots get wiped out again.....yes, and again. Some of the themes are starting to get a little stale but there are a few new characters and I think it is still funny the enemy space forces speak "French", just too funny. The book almost felt like less research and thought went into the whole storyline. The main character has defeated enemy forces time and time again to save the whole forces but is never promoted because he is too valuable where he is at. This book he sort of has a love interest. I hope to see some of the previous character return in the next book. Will I buy the next one.....yes. I hope the author invests a little more conceptual planning into where this is going? The narrator continues to just do a great job. I plan to look for other audio books he has done.

    "slipping, maybe....."

I've been listening to the series. got hooked with Book one. Excellent "yarn" and excellent narration from Luke Daniels. Then started book 2, no Daniels, performance wasn't near as good, and considerably slower tempo. not good.
the story also started to get repetitious, with numerous, repeats on how "they were the best , " always win a one on one". To much effort mentioning ALL past happenings. and feeling that one person had for another. they were taking 3 chapters building from a start of contact, to a climatic battle...then it would END in 3 sentence. You have to be careful not to totally miss the climatic scene.
I'm hoping Book 4 gets back on track.

"The most of the reviews on this book must be fake!"

A confederation of planets on the verge of war.... A major star-ship fuel rich planet with a major star-ship fuel processing plant, and orbiting transfer station..... No defenses but a couple weak lasers, and one small refinery town with one company of marines!

Who thinks that is not likely?!?!?!

I am not worrying about spoilers because the author did that already! The whole first part of the book is so pathetic I am getting a refund at chapter 9! The confederacy, the Union, the federation, the storm troopers, a German engineer woman named Fritz portrayed in a voice like a man! ROTFLOL!!! Ship names like the Dauntless, and many other copied names, so many I think the author did not have an original thought!

Bomb pumped lasers taking out ships from a battle platform, okay, that works except it was hiding behind a moon!!!!! ROTFLOL!!!! YEA, THAT'S THE TICKET!!! THE LASERS TRAVELED THROUGH THE MOON BEFORE TAKING OUT THE SHIPS!!!!

Conclusion, if you have any knowledge of space battle, tactical defensive strategy, and any desire for something original, DON'T GET THIS BOOK!!!

P.S. The reader reads so slow I had to speed up to 1.2. His voice is incapable of doing woman's voices! I could not tell when the reader went from one caricature to the next. The reading was droning on so badly I was drifting away in my own thoughts half the time. I'm surprised I was paying enough attention to catch all the totally stupid plot failures!

"Some real dead spots for me"

There were times I found myself skipping forward or impatiently waiting for what I considered extraneous dialog to pass by, but from a third book it wasn't bad.

I find third books to be the weakest in a series. A publisher may ask an author to stretch a plot line to get more books out, it an author experienced unplanned for success in a first book and had nothing thought up past a second book plot line.

This book stayed true to the characters developed in the fist two. Sonething I find rare and refreshing in a third book.

Jay is one of my favorite authors. He never fails to deliver on a well written novel that captures the moment perfectly. Jay paints a story with words that captures the sites and smells, the angst and anxiety of peril and victory completely as if he lived it first hand!
