Summary

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." (Arthur C. Clarke)

She didn't mean to use magic.

She didn't even know she had magic.

She just wanted to save her brother, who was dying in her arms.

Accused of using illegal magic, and sentenced to a cruel death at the hands of the city's guards, Hannah has no choice but to trust in the aid of a strange old man who wields unimaginable power.

The Founder has returned to correct the wrongs of unjust. But to do that, he needs Hannah, a young woman from the city slums. She has a key to unlocking a power even greater than his own - if she can only learn to trust herself and the magic flowing within her blood.

Restriction is a fantasy set in the far future, where magic and monsters ravage the land of Irth and only the strong survive.

Set on the foundation laid by the Kurtherian Gambit Series, Restriction tells an entirely new story in the Age of Magic - and of the heroes and villains who battle for control of its destiny.

Offshoot series from Kurtherian universe

*Spoilers* Set in the future of Earth after Bethany Anne & Michael have traveled into space, nanos & magic spread into the population; many weren't able to handle the etheric requirement & went mad; the mad were stopped & mankind grouped together to protect & rebuild. Ezekial, the Founder of Arcadia and primary architect of this new peace, decided to go a-travelin, & left his main student Adrian in charge. Adrian's power hungry urges went unchecked and a secret tyranny has been created. Only the rich who can pay off Adrian can send their children to the Academy for training. The poor who show magical ability are rounded up and killed. Ezekial is shocked at the abuse and inhumanity and decides to take action. Luckily, he witnesses the spontaneous magical actions of Hannah to save her brother's life; and decides to train her, as she can use all 3 types of magic. Ezekial believes Hannah has the ability to become an even greater mage than he is, and can be pivotal in ousting Adrian. Rudd does an excellent job with this narration. Must read for Kurtherian addicts (?) devotees (?) Enjoy!

Excellent start to the series

I really enjoyed this captivating fantasy. This story has complex, kick-ass characters that immediately grab your attention; a street rat with innovative powers, a wizard who's life's work has been perverted, mind controlling mystics and a villain with delusions of grandeur to name but a few. This story has tragedy, magic, hints of potential romance and action. The plot is well paced, exciting, humorous and keeps your attention from the beginning to the end. The narrator of the audiobook did an excellent job. Her male and female voices were spot on and she created tension, sarcasm and humour with her tone and intonation in all the right places. Kate Rudd gives the characters individual voice and had the story visualized in your head like a movie at the theatre. It's the first book I've read/listened to in this universe and it definitely made me want to read more in the Kurtherian Gambit series. I will look forward to listening to the continuation of Hannah's story in the next book.

Great New Fantasy New Series With Quite a Bit Of Action

The story is interesting and the characters are well developed. The Author created an excellent world. The story grips you and keeps you in the edge of your seat. There is some crude language and IMO I would say this is appropriate for an older audience not for kids.

Narration was well done and brought the story to life.

The story is not complete so if you want to find out how things turn out, you will need to continue reading the next book in this intriguing new series. There is a lot that goes on towards the end but it does leave you hanging and issues unresolved. This is very well written and I'm looking forward to listening to the next book in this epic fantasy series.

I used to worry about what I would listen to next

That’s, pretty much, the summary of this review, but here is a bit more. I am a painter (canvas, not house) and I spend ridiculous periods of time with my butt planted in front of a canvas. I didn’t used to think so, but there really is only so much music you can listen to continuously, so books on tape, or my phone or whatever. After doing this for a number of years, I have understandably run through quite a number of books, and I am understandably always looking for the next thing to listen to. Enter the Kutherian universe and the problem is solved. The stories are imaginative, and thoroughly enjoyable to listen to. There are now so many writers, of such high quality, that I should probably be entertained for years to come.

Stands Alone

What made the experience of listening to Restriction the most enjoyable?

This book is incredible! I'm hardly able to resist the call of the next long enough to write this review. Such a dynamic story is worth the sacrifice though, and I'll enjoy the anticipation while I give this work its due.Ever since stumbling across an intriguing description on a little book tittled "Death Becomes Her" (check it out), I've been greedily consuming all the releases I can. I've yet to be let down by a single chapter in all the books of the extended universe, and it is a joy to ride along with the many characters through their triumphs and challenges. That being said, this is the first off-shoot series to rival the Kurtherian Gambit books for my love. I've exalted in both Terry Henry and Valarie's stories, but at least part of me was always looking forward most to them meeting back up with TQB. Inevitably, any new audio release for the main series immediately pull me away from other stories. Now I'm not sure anything can pull me away from The Rise of Magic!Truly, this book stands on its own, and while it pays great homage to its ancestors, I was entirely swept away in the here and now. Whatever comes next I'm sure I will love, but I'm all in for the present and plan to enjoy every furious and passionate moment of Hannah's story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hannah. She is introduced to us as somehow who cares for others even when she has been given little reason to look out for anyone but herself. Her approach to life brings her strong relationships with people of true character, regardless of how Adrien's society views them.*SOILERS*I love the way her tough upbringing has refined her, and how her strict emotional suppression is both a point of character growth AND a strength for her rapid improvement in magic. Either giving up or giving into her emotions would be the end for her, and I look forward to seeing what balance she can find and what happens until she finds it.*END*

Have you listened to any of Kate Rudd’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

She is incredible, as always.Perhaps most importantly, this was a unique performance. I had no problem telling characters apart, from this work and her others. She has a very impressive vocal range, and I often forgot I was listening to a single artist.I call her an artist because that is what she is, and art is what she creates.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely! So, I did.

Any additional comments?

Enjoy!

Magic 101

A thoroughly engaging and enjoyable story of magic, government and a young girl with a power she never knew she had. The cast is full of strong characters, heroes and sidekicks who lean to the chaotic neutral side of the scale, willing to do what they need to do to survive but not really evil ... and then there are the government types ... uncompromising, self-interested and sometimes down right evil. This leads to an epic clash of wills and wits that will keep you breathlessly listening.
Funny, sad, thought-provoking, this was a story that makes me want to go read everything from this universe.

Loved it!

I loved the characters and the setting. The narrator was excellent. My favorite character was Hannah, she's such a smart ass. I highly recommend this for anyone wanting a fun, fast-paced, fantasy listen. I received a free review copy of this audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

Loved this fantasy realm!

Any additional comments?

I thought this was a really exciting story! Something that I haven't read in awhile fantasy wise. I have never read the book series before listenining to it, but thought it was pretty awesome and actually since I loved this version I probably won't read the series. Sometimes reading after listening can ruin a story for me. But I definitely think you should listen or read or even both for this series! I loved the world building and the character development. It's definitely a 5/5. And the twists really got me!

For the audio I definitely enjoyed listening to how these characters were portrayed. I think this is definitely one of those series that truly benefits from audio narration. 5/5.

Can't Wait for the Next Installment!

This story grabs you and doesn't let go! I was enthralled from the very beginning. I am so glad I requested this book. Hannah is a kick ass character, with a KICK ASS narrator in Kate Rudd. What I loved about this story was the points the plot hit on... official misconduct, the relationship between master and apprentice, and manipulation. I thought this was a powerful story and extremely well executed.
