Publisher's Summary

Space pirate meets Robin Hood in this edge-of-your-seat space adventure about an officer turned pirate.

When a tragedy makes his brother his enemy, Gage becomes a pirate captain who fills his time robbing from the rich Coalition and giving to the poor planets struggling to survive across the vast Macrocosm. But being a pirate comes with its risks, and Gage is hard-pressed to protect his crew and loved ones against the dangers of having enemies with bigger guns and faster ships. It doesn't help that he has a soft heart for damsels in distress and can never say no to a good adventure.

This is not a bad book. It's a bit like robin hood but in space. So there is some action/adventure with some romance. There are also dark moments. I found it slow to begin with but once it gets going it's OK. I would still like to find out what happens to the characters next.

Would recommend to those who love SciFi.

    Writing
An interesting Sci-Fi space adventure a bit like Robin Hood in space this is a fun listen for the most part with some darker more thoughtful moments

There are lots of different characters all of the different species and sometimes I found I a little hard to keep track of who was what species.

Cheree Alsop has crafted an interesting story that took a bit of time to get into but was worth it. And once it gets going the pacing is good. As we learn more and more about the main character and why things happen and the relationship between characters it gets better and better. By the time of got to the end of this book I was eagerly wanting to find out what happened next

    Narration
Erin C Gray does a solid job enhancing this book with their performance they give each character an unique voice that conveys personality and emotion. The narrator is easy to listen and easy I to understand so no complaints there. I would happily listen to another book narrated by them.

    Overview

"there be pirates in them stars..."

I love love love this book. The main char is so much fun, he's just what you would want from a captain of a band of space pirates. The story is fun (though like most books it has its happy and sad moments), leaves off in a good place even though it is a cliffhanger.

The voice actor does amazing work. This story has a bunch of char and he's got a voice for them all. Most are aliens so very unique to do, its fun to just listen to them all.

I was given this book for free in exchange for an unbiased review, thank you so much!

Would you try another book from Cheree Alsop and/or Erin C Gray?

I would try another book in this series, yes.

Would you be willing to try another book from Cheree Alsop? Why or why not?

I would try another book in this series, yes.

How could the performance have been better?

Reading the other comments, it's clear the Narration could use some work. What bothered me most was it seemed like the audio was edited to cut out too much. Some sentences - especially before or after dialog - were entirely too close together. It was like those YouTube videos where they do the jump cuts and it cut from dialog to narration too sharply or to another character entirely.

Do you think Renegade needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I feel this book was enough for this story arc but there are other books involving the characters already.

Fun space opera with likeable characters and great narration. Gage is a misunderstood pirate with a heart of gold. Some of the initial dialogue reminded me of Scotty on the original Star Trek series.

"Turned off at first, but it really catches you"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book threw me at first. The introduction almost felt like it was from another story. I was bothered by what I perceived as inaccuracies. For example, Gage, the pirate captain, had led troops in some battle, but he reported to a corporal (only privates report to corporals). Also, the characters referred to galaxies as though they were small distinct destinations. Pulled me out of the story (galaxies contain billions of stars and are separated by vast gulfs of space).
However, I stuck with it, and the story really caught me. I had a similar experience with the series FarScape - it just seemed too silly. But, I stuck with it and the characters started to matter to me, and I could just ignore the perceived problems.
This is a swashbuckling space adventure, in the vein of old space operas. Leave the science at the door and strap in for a real ride with larger than life characters.
Many reviewers had a problem with the narrator. I agree that I felt they over-acted, but I'm not sure it was an accident. It kind of fits the feel of the story.
    Good fun

This was hard for me to follow. I didn't realize this was a follow up series. I'd recommend reading the other books first.

The narrator gave a good performance.

"Rich space pirate who helps others saves the day."

I do not think I could ever call this story an in depth dive into the any of the characters but Cheree Alsop does a great job at providing bits and pieces of background to keep the listener informed. The story is fast paced enough that the lack of salient details is not too much of a burden, but Erin C Gray's performance leaves something to be desired and there are a few places where there is poor auditing. Overall the story is intriguing and worth a listen. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

    "An alright story"

The story was ok, a bit clichéd, but a fun plot none the less. I might have been able to overlook those if the narrator were different. He didn't fit at all with the book in my mind. His character voices were irritating and annoying especially the female ones. They all sounded plastered drunk, slurring and mumbling. It just didn't work for me. Possibly try the other books in the series on Kindle.

    Story
"Enjoyable but a little confusing for newcomers"

Only after having picked this up did I realise that this book, and the "Pirate from the Stars" series, actually is a continuation of a universe created with Alsop's "Girl from the Stars" series. I had not heard of this other series and had not read it before reading this book. As such I feel I was really thrown into the deep end here, with not too much explanation of the universe and how all the planets fit together.

So you may want to read that other series first (I'm not sure, I'm just assuming it fills the gaps here).

Overall its a 3.5/5, rounded up.

Even with the gaps in knowledge and being thrown into the deep end, I found the book to be really enjoyable. It follows a space pirate named Gage as he robs from the rich and gives to the poor, all while escaping from his enemies and his family (which somewhat overlap). He has a motley crew of pirates on his ship, having joined based on a "no questions asked" type policy.

Gage himself is a fun character, a bit of a larrakin, but also a good captain. He story does well in setting him up and getting you to engage with him, and making his concerns yours. The rest of the crew more blur together. Although some have distinct characters none are really impactful in a way that helped me to keep them all straight, although that didn't affect my enjoyment of the story either.

The narration by Erin C Gray was fairly good. Also a 3.5/5 rounded up. Gray provides all of what I generally enjoy in narration - emotions and action provided to the narration and characters, and individual voices for each to help separate them. She is clear and well paced with no obvious audio issues. The only real problem I had with her (and it's not one I've really found myself having had before) is that Gray overacts in places. There is too much excitement and energy in the action, sometimes pushing it to ridiculous levels. Some of the character voices are also over the top and cartoonish, which also becomes a little grating.

But if it was a choice between over-the-top and flat/bland, I would take over-the-top any day.

If you could sum up Renegade in three words, what would they be?

Space and Pirates with a feel of Jack Sparrow

What was one of the most memorable moments of Renegade?

There is no way I can pick just one. I was not disappointed and was left wanting more.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Erin C Gray?

I would have to see.. I'm not a fan of the reading, I couldn't tell if he was smiling all the time or if the character is an ass. I'm leaning to the reader was smiling too much

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I could see this as a Movie for sure, I will read book 2 it was that good
