Summary

After being court-martialed by the Space Legion for ordering the strafing of a treaty-signing ceremony, multimillionaire Willard Phule receives his punishment: He must command the misfit Omega Company on Haskin's Planet, a mining settlement on the edge of settled space. At his duty station, he leverages his personal money and a knack for managing people to get the company to come together as a unit. Phule convinces the governor to leave the contract for an honorary duty up for competition between the Space Legionnaires and the Regular Army. The Army sends some of their most elite troops to take part in the competition, but Phule's company operates with their own unique tactics....

Brilliant Book

Any additional comments?

I came back to audible after finishing the book to find any other in the series to buy but unfortunately there isn't any more yet. I guess I'll have to wait. I loved the book, I was rapt in in the whole time. Too short for how good it was. I can't wait for the next one. I always like that kind of character, who is full of wit and act decisively in any situation.

Fantastic!

Read this book back in the day and thought I would give the audiobook a go. I was not disappointed. The story was just as good as I remembered and the audio delivery by Noah was superb! I love Robert Aspirin’s books, each and every one, and listening to this felt like visiting old friends. I will most definitely be getting all that audible has to offer.

Audii Didn't Disappoint

Possibly my all time favourite set of books. Very enjoyable and easy to read. I've read and re-read them all and love the characters and style. This audio version is great. Please hurry and release the rest.

A fun listen.

What made the experience of listening to Phule's Company the most enjoyable?

A nice book to listen to when you just want to relax and listen to something but don't want to have to follow it too closely. It was funny, fun, and performed well. No complaints worth mentioning.

Refreshing

I first read this book over 20 years ago and could never find it in a library or book store after that. Then I got lucking and found the whole series at a used book store and even in my 30's I still enjoyed every long night reading these books. Then Tantor comes out of left field and makes it an audio book, not only that but a very well done version too.

The misfits of the Omega Mob are great and now that I can sit back and just enjoy their antics it's even better. Do yourself a favor and give this one a listen, it's lighthearted, intriguing, and funny. You won't regret it.

Pulp Scifi, enjoyable enough

I bought this as a whim. It wasn't spectacular, but kept me entertained. I'm down for trying out the rest of the series.

Fun sci-fi with reservations

First let me acknowledge the narrator, as Noah Michael Levine did an excellent job. His voices were fun and distinctive.

The plot is a futuristic military unit of misfits and the officer who tries to whip them into shape. The different personalities were enjoyable and they were well-developed. The pacing was good and the story moved along well.

However, my reservations are these: 1) the plot device of the officer's butler introducing the chapters was unnecessary; the POV could have been third-party and just as good, and 2) the constant use of wealth to solve problems was a cop out. I think that the legion commander was too much of a wise-acre and I began to dislike him. He never had a problem he couldn't buy his way out of. That was unrealistic and disappointing.

The book includes very little violence or foul language, no sex.

An Old Favorite

I was coming into this with high expectations. I have read this book several times before-it is a good, light-hearted story that never takes itself too seriously. I am pleased that the audio version didn't disappoint. I like the narrator, and he seemed to manage a wide variety of characters with no problem. If you're looking for a space comedy that is quick and fun, this is it. The characters are endearing and the storyline is good. You can tell that it is an older book, with some dated references and technologies that in some cases seem behind the times for something that is supposed to be happening in space. Over all, however, it doesn't affect the story that much. In fact, it's kind of fun to see what people thought technology would develop in the future. A great introduction to Robert Asprin for those who haven't tried him out yet!

Smarter than expected

What did you like best about Phule's Company? What did you like least?

Prior to starting the book, I assumed it would be a story line similar to the old TV show, Hogan's Heroes - meaning bumbling characters. Turns out that I liked the characterization of the commander much more than I anticipated.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Frankly, I ended up gleaning some ideas from Phule's character for how to team build with my employees. Who knew?!

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I'm picky about narrators. Noah did a nice job with narrating this book.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Unlikely
