Summary

As the flames of treachery spread throughout the Imperium, Horus plots to subvert or destroy all those who would stand against him.

On Mars, home world of the Mechanicum priesthood, the great manufactory-cities have long produced much of the weaponry required for the expeditionary fleets across the galaxy - making the world invaluable to whoever controls it in the coming war.

Now, the Warmaster's agents begin to stoke the fires of rebellion, turning the loyalist forges and the mighty Titan Legions against one another. And, with whispers spreading of an ancient terror lurking beneath the Red Planet's surface, the Dark Mechanicum rises....

Amazing

Toby and Graham knock it out of the park again in a thrilling story of titan on titan action. The camp over the topness and galactic complexity of 40k is on full force, I wouldn't recommend it as a introduction but definitely a must listen.

Variable

Quite a slow start. The middle was a little better but still not up to Graham's usual standard. Perhaps I'm just not super excited about mechanicum stories! That said, the last quarter of the book was very good and really built tension and excitement!

Great change of scenery!

Not at all being familiar with the Mechanicus lore, it took me a little while to get into/get my head around...however it was totally worth it. Great story and some key story points to the heresy proper.

The best one yet! So much of the HH is drivel

The vast majority of the HH books I've listened to are very dull affairs. There are one or two gems, this being one.

Great Book

I'm not much for the Mechanicum but I did like this book. Really compelling story and shows off the origins of the faction and explains the split really well. love the action between Knights and Titans.

Humanity in the machine

Surprisingly the best parts of the book were how human the main characters felt.

Best part of the 30k books for me has always been showing how so many of the best parts of the imperium were burnt out by 40k times.

The narration was also great,

The best self-contained novel in the HH series.

It takes an especially talented writer to take a 30K/40K novel away from the genre's pulp roots, but McNeill is such a writer. The plot is water-tight, the pacing akin to a screenplay, the description appropriately verbose, and the characters humane and relatable. Don't expect a grand exploration of themes, instead adjust your expectation for a story that is perfect in its concision, simplicity, and humanity. This audiobook wouldn't nearly be so strong if not for the multiple voices of Toby Longworth. It is astounding how he can make every character unique, how he can immerse and excite you with a wide range of tempo and volume. The perfect narrator, in my opinion.
