Publisher's Summary

Young Corban watches enviously as boys become warriors, learning the art of war. He yearns to wield his sword and spear to protect his king's realm. But that day will come all too soon. Only when he loses those he loves will he learn the true price of courage.

The Banished Lands has a violent past where armies of men and giants clashed in battle, the earth running dark with their heartsblood. Although the giant clans were broken in ages past, their ruined fortresses still scar the land. But now giants stir anew, the very stones weep blood, and there are sightings of giant wyrms. Those who can still read the signs see a threat far greater than the ancient wars. Sorrow will darken the world as angels and demons make it their battlefield. Then there will be a war to end all wars.

High King Aquilus summons his fellow kings to council, seeking an alliance in this time of need. Prophesy indicates darkness and light will demand two champions, the Black Sun and the Bright Star. They would be wise to seek out both, for if the Black Sun gains ascendancy, mankind's hopes and dreams will fall to dust.

    remove the narrators constant pausing.

Would you ever listen to anything by John Gwynne again?

    with a different narrator

Would you be willing to try another one of Damian Lynch’s performances?

no no no ... and no

What character would you cut from Malice?

never made it past the first 30 mins

    Any additional comments?

i listen to 3 / 4 books a month while driving and this is the first one i have given up on completely.

"A Surprising find, a decent book with a character"
Would you consider the audio edition of Malice to be better than the print version?

Haven't read the book so i cannot tell you.

What did you like best about this story?

To be honest the twisting route of light and truth into the darkness inch by inch and decision by decision. Its a great rendition of a similar and familiar story we all know and love.

What about Damian Lynch’s performance did you like?

He is a solid voice actor , was confused by the random accents.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

again I've heard this question its stupid.

    Any additional comments?

Dear avid listener, this book has 2 min characters and 4-6 sub characters, it follows mostly two main lads are coming of age, one is a prince the other a blacksmith son. you dont quite know who is the good guy and who is the bad. I would recommend this to most people.

    "Epic tale"

A great story with more than a little influence from Game of Thrones. The narration let it down a bit - seemed very rushed in places and lacking tension at exciting moments. I checked several times to see if I had it on fast speed but it wasn't. I know its a big book but there's no hurry!
One of those stories that deserves a second read or listen to get all the characters in the right place but well worth the time.

    "Boring reader"

I can't fully rate this audiobook because I didn't get very far. from what I did read, it had potential, but any potential was killed by the lackluster narration. With a better narrator that can bring different tones the book would be much better.

    "good time sink"

This is an audio book review.

It's not a good story. very predictable plot twists and its full of cliches, tropes.

The voice acting is good, though some characters and lines are jarring & just wrong. That is to be expected when the actor has to voice tens of characters.

I enjoyed the listen overall. recommended for a very long journey to fill time.

I quite enjoyed this book. I found it got lost a bit halfway through and jumped backwards and forwards a bit too much at the start but overall an enjoyable listen.

"Great story but be prepared to focus"

This is a fantastic book with a great story and narrated very well. The characters are varied and have layers and this is demonstrated well from the outset.

if you are a fan of works such as the cycle of Galand, dawn of wonder and the seven stones series then this will definitely be for you.

the one thing that i would say the style of writing is to move from group to group and this happens at a fairly quick pace which means following character names and places can become confusing. I found myself skipping backwards and forwards just to confirm places and people (this is the first audiobook which i have needed to do this) obviously when reading a physical book this is not as big of a deal but on an audio book became annoying after about the 8 hour mark there had been enough repetition and knowledge that this was not needed.

I would not let my comments dissuade you from this book but i would suggest that it is not a great book to have in the car for the first bit if you don't want to crash.

have already completed the secodn which was great and on the 3rd now.

    "Decent Fantasy but..."
    Any additional comments?

Decent fantasy and well written. Obvious literary tropes of good versus evil / darkness versus lightness and a slow burner as it's very character driven, something I come to expect in fantasy novels.

Negative points that really let this book down was the sheer number of characters. Very easy to lose track of everyone and forget who is who. The narration was completely off on a lot of the characters, too many accents to juggle and some of them were downright bizarre and off-putting. A shame really as Damian Lynch has a lovely speaking voice normally, just not when he's 'in character'.

Would recommend to actually read this book rather than listen to. Due to the massive amount of description and characters, it's easy to get lost in the narration and I feel reading it, one would absorb the information better.
