Publisher's Summary

Sunny Los Angeles can be a dark place indeed in Cassandra Clare's Lord of Shadows, the sequel to the number-one New York Times and USA Today best-selling Lady Midnight. Lord of Shadows is a Shadowhunters novel.

Emma Carstairs has finally avenged her parents. She thought she'd be at peace. But she is anything but calm. Torn between her desire for her parabatai Julian and her desire to protect him from the brutal consequences of parabatai relationships, she has begun dating his brother, Mark. But Mark has spent the past five years trapped in Faerie; can he ever truly be a Shadowhunter again?

And the faerie courts are not silent. The Unseelie King is tired of the Cold Peace and will no longer concede to the Shadowhunters' demands. Caught between the demands of faerie and the laws of the Clave, Emma, Julian, and Mark must find a way to come together to defend everything they hold dear - before it's too late.

    "Much better"

OMG sooo much better. James Master's performance of this was far better than Morena Baccarin's Lady Midnight. Made the ok writing far more enjoyable.

    "Well, what an ending!"

Enjoyed the book for the most part.
There was the odd bits that were hard to follow as it jumped about a bit.

Still can't wait for the next one, to see what happens to everyone else

But not overly impressed with the narrator. no one seemed to have their own voice, which made it difficult to keep up with who was who at times.

I do wish a good narrator could be used for the whole series of books.

    "awful performance, great book"

loved the book but I did struggle to listen to it as James Masters did not do the book justice. Awful performance compared to Lady Midnight.

That aside, how long do we need to wait until book 3 is released??!

"Good book but a little over-progressive."
Have you listened to any of James Marsters’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I like James Masters and really enjoyed his narration of the Dresden books although there were a few slight mispronunciations. The other slight problem I have is that,, considering he played an English Vampire for years on Buffy, he had a terrible English accent for the parts of the book set in the UK.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Better than the Mortal Instruments.

    Any additional comments?

What a great story. A riveting listen from start to finish and every second enjoyable. Each character has something to offer and is progressed well. The story is intriguing and full of twists, and the narration is highly engaging.

If I were to make a little complaint it would be that the writing seems to be too progressive in the sense that it seems to make a big deal about not making a big deal about homosexuality. There seem to be more homosexual characters than I would consider realistic in a general cross section of society. So many in fact that it surprises me that Shadow Hunters haven't died out through lack of procreation. Don't get me wrong I am all for inclusion but I just think that the author is trying a little too hard.

Aside from this, this is another great book and I can't wait for more.

    "Fun and enjoyable fantasy"

Fast paced enjoyable story as always from Cassandra Clare. Was very disappointed in James Marsters' performance though - had been looking forward to it, but his different accents were intrusive, and his pronounciation of the Welsh words in the text laughable. (Eg Gwyn ap Nudd as 'ap Nude'.) In an age when you can type 'how to pronounce X in Welsh' into google and get multiple audio clips this is pretty unforgiveable.

"Fantastic book, if only one thing could change"

Fantastic story, the only thing that would have made it better & flow from book one to book two, is if the narrator had stayed the same.

    "Great next instalment"
Would you consider the audio edition of Lord of Shadows to be better than the print version?

Yes - I have both editions and enjoyed the audio far more because of the amazing narration by James Marsters

What did you like best about this story?

That it continued the mortal instruments world with another shadow hunter family

What about James Marsters’s performance did you like?

His ability to give a voice to each character and take on many accents was utterly engaging. He is a fantastic actor and I truly hope that he gets to narrate the next instalments and many more.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, a character discovering the the part desperation played in his relationship - it was such an enlightening part showcasing the complexities of some relationships

    Any additional comments?

This is a good addition and expansion for the shadow hunter world progressing on from the Mortal Instruments which I loved, but not as much as The Infernal Devices which is my favourite Cassandra Clare series. If you are new to the shadow hunter world start at the Infernal Devices, if you have read them and the Mortal Instruments, read on and enjoy.

    "Holy hell - litterally"

After being wowed over and over by the immortal instruments and the infurno devices, how is it possible to reach even further? Through Cassandra Claire's brilliance, she has managed to not only pull off 3 amazing series but strategically bring this world to it's knees using all storielines as her guide to keep them all conected. The amazing thing about all books, is they never feel rushed as if the writer is in a hurry to get to the end. She lets her characters development into themselves creating remarkable and beautiful characters you come to love or hate. . Lord of shadows is no exception and once again am still in awe and can't wait for what Cassandra has in store for the shadow hunters next given this shocking ending in preperation for the next.. Just when you think, there may be respite, a happy ending, she catches you off guard which is part of what a truly talented author can do. If you're into a quick and catchy book, this is not for yu but if you have the patience to let this world in, you will not be disappointed. As for what's coming...I'm not even gonna try guess but know it will be yet another masterpiece.
