Summary

Fresh off their victory over Graves and his followers, Marcus and his friends have managed to enjoy a few weeks of relative calm and peace as they continue to build Aldford, preparing the town for a new wave of settlers coming from Eberia. But as the days wear on with no new arrivals in sight, they begin to fear the worse, eventually setting out to search for their promised reinforcements and soon realizing that they weren’t as alone on the frontier as they thought they were.

Just managing to rescue a caravan of settlers in the nick of time from a horde of bandits, Marcus and the rest of Virtus barely have a chance to catch their breath before they find themselves thrust into the middle of Eberian politics, revealing a plot that threatens not only to take away their hard-won independence...but to destroy Aldford completely.

Fantastic follow-up!

Great story and very well narrated. Probably the best in the series so far. Would definitely recommend reading book '2' first despite it being a side story as it adds a lot of depth to new main characters in this book.

Good story and of course a great narrator

I'm really enjoying this series. Book 1.5 threw me for a bit of a loop, but it tied in with this one, so I'm glad I listened to it. The Story really ramps up toward the end with a great climactic ending. Luke does a good job of balancing story with LitRPG elements and doesn't overwhelm the listener with stat sheet updates

Edge of your seat!

This was a brilliantly well paced story. The Characters are further developed and balanced giving them a depth that is often lacking in this genre. The battles are frequent and action packed. and Luke Daniels does a truly brilliant job on his narration.

MC often forgets his own powers.

I was thoroughly enjoying this book. It had humor, action, suspense, political intrigue, and a great game world. I couldn’t put it down until, the author has he MC forget his own powers. It is one of my biggest pet peeves in fantasy. It happens when an author makes his character too powerful and needs to create suspense.
For example the MC has a big battle with an old enemy, and not once did he use his blink step. He went from a badass who blinked across the battle field in previous battles to and idiot who slowly runs up the the bad guy who is fighting his friend. He use to be able to blink in an instant but now instead he gets killed and he deserved it (i understand the pressure of battle may make people react irrationally but his whole schtick is that he and his guild have trained and prepared themselves more than others). I actually no longer wanted him to succeed in the book. He is suppose to be a spell sword, but he almost never uses his spells. Sure he might cast a spell shield, but come on!! Aargh I wanted to actually yell at the author.
It’s lazy and you lost me as a fan.

Phenomenal!

Yet another fantastic dive into Ascend Online! A perfect blend of world building, character building and action. Luke Chmilenko manages to deliver a long and strong showing with this installment that starts fast and ends with a break necking descent into awesome!

Couldn't finish it.

The story was fine, but I swear, if I hear the word "azure" one more time I'll scream. Just say "blue" instead, we get it. It sounds trivial, but that, plus the excessive use of adjectives instead of pronouns made me put the book down.

Meh

Main protagonist is fairly annoying. Whines too much and doesn’t seem to know what’s going on most of the time. He survives on dumb luck alone. All the other characters are great though. Fully fleshed out and a contrast to the main protagonist.

Performance is as expected, awesome.

Plot, where art thou

Not much story here. Lots of minutia.

Lots of action without much direction.

Screw Flanders.

Disappointed

The series had a good start, but fell flat on this book. The author is using the same stupid plot events to drag the story on, and the MC just keeps making the same mistake over and over.

This is an okay book for fans of the genre

If you just absolutely love the LitRPG genre than this book will be a decent read. The fight scenes drag on a lot, and progress for the plot is slow. However the author does wrap climaxes up well, and develops a lot of the characters pretty well so it was not all bad. I did find myself struggling to finish it however. I will keep the book tho and buy the next one "assuming it is the same story not like the 2nd book". It's just not something I am going to be super excited about.

Narration is fine. Luke Daniels does a good job.

azure

The narration was great, and the story was solid if combat-heavy. What was neither great nor solid was the word azure, the overuse of which was genuinely distracting.
