They've waited long enough. The mutant white rats had grown and mated, creating offspring in its own image. They dominated the others, the dark-furred ones, who foraged for food and brought it back to the lair. Now the dark rats were restless, tormented by a craving they could not satisfy. But the white slug-like thing that ruled them knew. Its two heads weaved to and fro and a stickiness drooled from its mouth as it remembered the taste of human flesh.
James Herbert was one of Britain’s greatest popular novelists and our #1 best-selling writer of chiller fiction. Widely imitated and hugely influential, he wrote 23 novels which have collectively sold over 54 million copies worldwide and been translated into 34 languages.
Born in London in the forties, James Herbert was art director of an advertising agency before turning to writing fiction in 1975. His first novel, The Rats, was an instant bestseller and is now recognised as a classic of popular contemporary fiction.
Herbert went on to publish a new top ten best-seller every year until 1988. He wrote six more bestselling novels in the 1990s and three more since: Once, Nobody True and The Secret of Crickley Hall.
Herbert died in March 2013 at the age of 69.

Wonderful Narration
I’m a fan of James Herbert and I enjoyed the book that was made better by the narrator.

Fantastic sequel.
This is an excellent follow up to the first book and the narration is similarly good. The first book is definitely the best of the series, but this was not a letdown not at all.

Just as good as I remember
I read the 'Rats' trilogy as a young lad, way back when.
I loved them then, and love them even more now. The performance, sometimes felt a little over the top during main action scenes, but this did not detract from the overall great performance.
James Herberts writing as always, in my opinion, been graphical giving the reader a clear image of the scene.
Also recommend Unabridged Secret of Crickley Hall, ASH series, Fog.

A great sequel
Lair is a very similar story to rats just set in a different place, as a second out brake of killer Rats set up home in a forest just outside of London. I have to say I love the narrator of these books, he doesn't do the voices as much as some but he reads with a passion not match by others.

Fabulous narration
The story is good., not quite in the same league as Rats but an engaging sequel. What made this one of my favourites is David Rintoul's performance. He gives the book the intense energy a good horror story requires.

The 3 G's Gory, gruesome and great
What I love about Herbert and Lair is the non stop pace and gore fest written with excellent description and nevre jangling skill. I was worried after Rats the sequel wouldn't match up to it, but it did Iand I especially liked the flasher! lol

A worthy follow-up
Would you consider the audio edition of Lair to be better than the print version?
In some ways yes mainly due to the way the narrator draws you into the story.
What other book might you compare Lair to, and why?
Obviously comparable to 'The Rats' in as much as it is the same author & narrator and it follows on really well from book one.
What about David Rintoul’s performance did you like?
David Rintoul has a voice that is perfect for the story in the gravelly tones used in what is a sombre gruesome tale.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Something along the lines of ........ You thought they had been wiped out .. but you were wrong!!!

awesome book.
amazing trilogy, I have read them all multiple times. I would love for someone to remake the Rats film. the old one is pretty rubbish.
