Plutôt que de laisser le duc Gorlois étendre la domination des hommes, le druide Merlin s'attache à réunir Lliane, la reine des elfes, et son amant le chevalier Uter. Investi du pouvoir de Lliane, Uter deviendra le Pendragon, chef de guerre de tous les peuples libres, vaincra Gorlois et tentera de restaurer l'ordre ancien. Mais il reste à choisir entre l'amour de deux reines : Lliane, l'inaccessible, et Ygraine, si réelle, si humaine. Et obtenir la main d'Ygraine, ce serait embrasser la religion chrétienne, trahir Merlin, renoncer à Lliane...
