Publisher's Summary

The Black Fleet Saga continues....

A human planet has been invaded. The enigmatic Darshik have landed troops on a frontier world and have begun subduing major cities even as their blockade repels all attempts by the fledgling United Terran Federation to mount a counteroffensive.

The Federation's military command is desperate, and with their fleet still in tatters, they make a last-ditch effort to free the planet: They pull Captain Jackson Wolfe out of retirement and put him in command of a ship they hope can get past the defending armada and provide support to the beleaguered Marines and civilians fighting on the surface of the contested world.

There is no reasoning with this enemy. If the Terran Federation wants their planet back, they will have to pay the price.

Iron & Blood is the second book of the Expansion Wars Trilogy and the fifth book of the Black Fleet Saga.

A great second book to the expansion trilogy (The fifth book in the dual-trilogy if you follow on from the Black Fleet Trilogy). Top marks again for Joshua Dalzelle's great story line and Mark Boyett's narration skills. The perfect combination to bring you the exploits of Captain Wolfe. ten out of ten. Looking forward to the next one.

    "Fickers?"

I looked forward to this second instalment of James Dalzelle's Expansion Wars trilogy. I very much enjoyed Dalzelle's Black Fleet Trilogy although I did find the final part of that series rather unsatisfying. Iron & Blood is a well written story and pulls the reader into the narrative as all good books do. Mark Boyett provides excellent narration as ever and in overall terms I did enjoy this story. however, as interesting as it was, the impression I got was that not an awful lot actually happened. The story moves on but it doesn't feel as well paced as other books by Dalzelle. Perhaps it's just me but the book spent most of itself describing what I felt might have been dealt with faster so that we could have more events occurring. I had meant to write this review, as I do with most, right after reading it so that it's fresh in my mind and perhaps this has marred my memory of the story. Again, I'd like to stress that it's a good story and written competently but I got the impression that events were being stretched out for a third book. There is a lot of scope in Dalzelle's stories but he seems to limit himself to trilogies with each book being relatively short which is a shame.

One thing I spotted in the first chapter of the book was an odd remark made by a character as he berated his enemy. When I heard it, I thought that it was clearly a simple typo by the author and wondered how on Earth this could get past the publishers and narrator but we hear a character say "Fickers" rather than the obvious expletive version of this altered by just a single letter and one that resides right next to the appropriate one on a keyboard. Unless I've missed something, I have no idea what a "Ficker" is and I can only assume it's a glaring typo.

Still, I look forward to the final part of this trilogy and can still recommend the book as a decent read.

    "Great fun as always"

Only thing I'm not keen on is the narrators female voices and tendency to make some of the characters sound a bit petulant.

Fun story though, looking forward to book 3.

    "Entertainment at its purest form"

Again the series hits the nail in the wall where the pace, action and intensity are concerned. Most importantly its a very good piece of entertainment opening up a much antecipated end to this triology. The space battles and the effect of time in this aspect is wonderful and these new foes are very well created. Can't wait for the next episode...

Another hit from Joshua Dalzelle; well worth the credit. The added bonus was the narration by Mark Boyett.

    "Almost finished in one sitting"

Darnit! Two days and I've already finished the book! I was hoping to take my time and savor the story. But nope! I completely lost myself in the book and only realized that it was early morning when my eyes started hurting. I stopped the book and put it away, intending to save it for when I was on the road. But again, nope. I woke up thinking about the story and ended up finishing the book in that day.

I won't get into details, but I will say that Senior Captain Wolfe is not brought back into the fleet the way I expected. And it made for a great and gripping story. Also, the new characters and new scenarios kept me riveted.

This book is REALLY not a rehash of the previous books. In this one, we see the war from a few different angles from before. And it's outstanding.

I again have to give my complements to Mark Boyett. His pace, emotion, and voicing are excellent. A great performance for a great story.

    Highly recommended!

    "Fantastic foresight building the characters!"

The story was thought out before and not in happenstance as so many authors do to extend a great start. The Trilogy was no second thought for the story has evolved form entertaining to exceptional and impossible to put down. May need to caution listeners to have the uninterruptible time to finish the book once started.

    "Just Passing Through"

As the 2nd in the New Frontiers trilogy, I & B was not as thrilling as Call to Arms was as the #2 book in the Black Fleet trilogy, but having old friends makes it good. The cast of characters is sound and makes you feel as if you are looking over their shoulders as they try and solve the increasingly complex alien puzzles before them. It is not nearly the end and the closing moments makes me want the 3rd in this series to appear as soon as possible! Mark Boyett, by the way, is perfect. I have read him before with other series and he makes it real and doubles the enjoyment.
