Summary

New York Times best-selling author Mira Grant, author of the renowned Newsflesh series, returns with a novel that takes us to a new world of ancient mysteries and mythological dangers come to life.

The ocean is home to many myths,

But some are deadly....

Seven years ago the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a mockumentary bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a tragedy.

Now a new crew has been assembled. But this time they're not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life's work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart, this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Whatever the truth may be, it will be found only below the waves.

But the secrets of the deep come with a price.

Thrilling, fun and gory

I had to stop this every so often to take a break, the closed off spaces with a monster at your heels is one of the things I love/hate to read! This is 100% worth your time!

Bit of a let down.

Thought the idea was great but the main characters were not likeable and the narration and accents were very poor . It also ended very abruptly so all in all was dissapointed

Brilliant narrator

Great story, really compelling.
Christine Lakin does an amazing job of keeping up with all the characters.. 2 accent are a little shaky but she’s fantastic.

Pretty easy entertainment

Loved the story though I I have to say sometimes it went a little bit too far in explaining the science behind certain bits, making it drag a little.

The characters were a little melodramatic in some place but on the whole likeable.

The reader was fairly good, very consistent throughout even though their attempts at accents were a little out there

Excellent book - narrator has a few quirks.

Mira Grant's magic drew me in from the very first chapter (the same magic that made me actually WANT to read about zombies :-O ) and I was hooked!

But of COURSE Mira Grant had to write about the kind of scary mermaids that nightmares are made of! I was glad to be reading it in the light of day - and on DRY LAND!!! It's absolutely fascinating that we know less about what happens just 1km underneath the surface of the sea, than we do thousands and thousands of km above it! And that makes this novel just that much more realistic than her zombie novels... and thus also that much more scary.

Not that I'm likely to be scared away from the sea because of this, mind you... but I'll perhaps think twice before I go diving in the Mariana Trench :-P

In the end, there were quite a few questions left unanswered, but I'm pretty sure that's to leave room for a sequel at some point. No cliff-hangers though - the main plot was nicely resolved.

The narrator was mostly really good, but I do wish she hadn't attempted the accents. Other reviewers mentioned the Australian accent, and I have to agree that it was really, really bad. Fortunately she didn't have all that many lines. It also grated on me that "Jacques" was consistently pronounced "Jock". But again - fortunately not a name that was said often enough to ruin the rest of the book.

Too much science

Intriguing concept but executed with an emphasis placed too highly on scientific jargon. Found myself falling asleep much of the time, wishing for more action. It’s during these scenes, which are relatively frequent once it gets going, the author’s talents shine through. Descriptive gore and horror.

Excellent horror story

A properly scary story, with delightful characters I really cared about. And with some queer and disabled representation that doesn't take the center stage but is just there, just like in real life.

Gripping story!

One of the few times where I’ve really been gripped by the plot of a story, really recommend this - my only critique is the Australian accent. Just try to get through it, the plot is worth it!
