Publisher's Summary

It was supposed to be a way to end the devastation in the Middle East, but instead a darkness is unleashed unlike anything the world has ever seen before.

Ike Glass is well versed in chaos, but even he is unprepared for what the world will become after the outbreak. Ace Cullen has been loyal to his country ever since he was brought to the states as a young boy, but it's difficult to stand by a country that can't even take responsibility for their own actions. Phoenix Blue just wants a night of mindless sex...is that too much to ask? Always a black sheep, she shocks everyone as she finds the strength inside herself to protect the ones she cares about, and fight to see another day. They were strangers when the virus took over, but tragedy will bring them together in ways they never thought possible as they descend into the darkness.

"Overall fun and enjoyable start to the series."

I was kindly given a copy of the audio book of Kira Adams Into The Darkness for an honest review.

    3.5 Stars

This is the first part of the Darkness Falls series and was a good introduction to the world. I actually didn't realise this was YA to start with and from switching from a fairly lengthy tome of a Stephen King novel it did somewhat feel a little jarring but that said this quick read managed to pack a punch even at times I wanted parts of the characters fleshed put a little more but I'm guessing in later parts they will be.

The first person writing style and tone made it impossible not to compare this to some of Mira Grants books but for a younger audience. This isn't a criticism but I hope will give people clues about the atmospherics and to some extent the setup.

Some of the twists really took me by surprise whilst one of the major ones I had guessed early on. At times I felt like the book might be falling into certain tropes but was glad to see that it swerved these and helped keep things exciting.

With the book moving along at such speed it sometimes feels like the urgency of certain scenes possibly isn't conveyed as well as it needs to be and at times I wished we could have just had a little more dialogue or scene setting but overall this was an enjoyable read and a good introduction to the series which left on a solid cliffhanger.

I was excited to receive this book has I have been reading quite a few zombie apocalypse stories. This story did not deliver. I spent the majority of the book rolling my eyes or wanting to yell at the characters. This is the start of a series and I am not compelled to see what happens next.

    "Good start to a series"

    3.5 stars
Good start to series. I really enjoyed this story. It pulled me and held my complete attention from start to finish. I was so into the story before I knew it over 4 hours had flown by and it was over. My only complaint.... I wish it had been longer. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

It does end in a cliffhanger so be prepared.

While there is really nothing unusual or new about this story that's not a bad thing. It's a good solid story that is interesting, entertaining and has a really good cast of likable characters. There is enough going on to keep the story moving, building the suspense with plenty of surprises and twists. Being a zombie survival story of coarse there is plenty of action as well.

Note: the main character Phoenix was molested as a child. While it does not go into details if this is a trigger for some they may want to skip this story. Not quite sure we needed the extra about the Uncle. I understand it lent towards developing her trust issues but I could have done without it.

Lori Faiella did a great job with the narration. Pleasant voice that is easy to listen to for long periods of time. Clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Good character voices. Both male and female. Just a slight change in tone is enough to distinguish between male and female characters. She was able to bring the characters, their emotions and the story to life. Hopefully she will narrating the rest of the series. Very enjoyable.

    Story
    "Not great"

The story wasn't that bad, but I did not enjoy the writing at all. Certain words were repeated so many times that they became nails on a chalkboard to me. Animatedly, excitedly, hurriedly, etc. Some of the dialogue was uncomfortable at best and laughable at worst. The overall story was a bit generic but it could have worked if the writing was better. And then the books ends in a major cliffhanger that does more to irritate the reader than make him or her want to read part 2. I received a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for my honest review, and it was tough getting through this one.

    "What happens next?"

The overall story is interesting and book 2 is going on my 'to read' list, but I thought more information could have been useful at times. There are lots of unanswered questions for me and while I'm sure more will be revealed in future books, I feel like this book could have been a five star book if there weren't so many holes.

The story is well planned, with interesting and likeable characters, I'm looking forward to reading book two.

Nice delivery and good character voices, I enjoyed listening to the narration.

I received this book free from the narrator/publisher/author in exchange for an honest review.

    Story
    "Decent story, bad narrator"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

There are some spoilers below. I read the book summary and was really excited to read this story. I always enjoy a survival story involving zombies. This story was good, but I think it could have been better if it had been told from a third person perspective. Reading it from the character's first person was a bit disjointed, it didn't flow very well. Also, there were some parts that could have used better description or more background as to why these things were happening. I absolutely didn't understand how one of the military guys that joins the group, Cullen (Colin? Not sure of spelling because I listened to the audio book), how he fell in love with Phoenix after what seemed like they had just met each other. There wasn't any real build up for that plot line, and it felt forced. Phoenix's relationship with Harlan was more life like. Spoiler here: One thing that really bothered me was the initial bite Phoenix got. It said it wasn't so bad because it was through a shower curtain, which makes me think no bodily fluids got into her system. But then Phoenix concludes, correctly somehow, that she must be adopted because she wasn't infected through this bite, like the rest of her family was. It was very confusing.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The twist at the end was pretty interesting, and I didn't see it coming, so that was a good surprise.

What didn’t you like about Lori Faiella’s performance?

The audio book needs another narrator. I think a lot of the problems in the story came from how it was read, and maybe it reads better in print. The narrator didn't show much emotion, other than raising her voice now and again.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably not, horror books adapted into movies rarely turn out well.

    Any additional comments?

There were plenty of confusing parts during the story. Despite that, underneath there is the idea for a really good story. The end of the book had a great cliff hanger and it really started to flow a lot better. The characters also had decent dialogue, which I felt was true to life. If the author ever thinks about publishing a new edited edition, I hope she'll flesh out some details and make the story a little longer. I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review. I'm going to read the next book, because as I said, the end really started to pick up and I'm interested in where the story will go.

"Zombie Apoc Story with a Little Romance"

Kira Adams has created a fun little world where the US government in hopes of settling that nasty little middle east problem makes a bug in the lab that gets us the Zombie Apocalypse. It speeds around the world pretty fast. The main character is Phoenix Blue. I young woman with a streak of rebellion in her, her younger sister Rian we met along the way. Ike, Cullen, Jerrika, Degenerates, and the remains of the Government. It is found out that Phoenix is immune to the bite of Zombies. There is plenty of betrayals, fighting, and mistrust along with Cliffhanger ending as this is the first book in the series. I enjoyed it. The story was fun and the drama between the characters made for interesting times between zombies attacks.

This is the first performance I have heard from Ms. Faiella but I greatly enjoyed her work on this project. She does a great job with a diverse cast of characters.

"An entertainaing Zombie novel for Young Adults"

The story is fresh in it's young Heroine approach. Miss Phoenix is a disaster waiting to happen and a zombie apocalypse is a really good place for her to let her hair down. The story is full of young adult angst, romance and lust along with the struggle to stay alive. Its a fun and entertaining story.

The narrator has a very pleasant voice and did a good job with pace, tone and timing. It made the novel easy to listen to as well as kept all the characters easy to follow.

WARNING: If you don't like cliff hangers this book is not for you. As you will have to read book two in order to find out what happens! to me this would of been 4 stars, but I hate cliffhangers hangers! I understand its a series, but to me, there is nothing wrong with wrapping it up and leading to the next book.

Phenix, seems to be the only one that can not catch the zombie virus that is quickly taking over the planet. After being bitten she learns this little secret. She wasn't turned.
I like most of the charities in this book, I found most of them very likable.
This most diffanlty a different kind of zombie book. it has A LOT of drama. and Phenix seems to be pretty down on herself a lot of the times, to the point where you want to slap her and tell her to get over it!

The narrator was not good in this book. She did Phenix voice well and her english accent and that pretty much it.

the narrator kind of killed this book for me. I felt that the performance was awkward and really detracted from the story. This story had potential but it wasn't quite there for me
