Summary

The eagerly anticipated follow-up to the number one bestseller Vagabond, this is the third instalment in Bernard Cornwell's GRAIL QUEST series, in a bright and bold repackage.

It is 1347. The Hundred Years War has been suspended. The truce releases English archer Thomas of Hookton to pursue his arch enemy and resume his quest for the most prized relic in Christendom: the Holy Grail. Heading south, Thomas and his men-at-arms begin lightning raids to draw out his enemy.

But fate takes an unexpected hand when the plague strikes. What had been a landscape of castles, monasteries, vineyards and villages becomes death’s kingdom and the need for the grail, as a sign of God’s favour, is more urgent than ever.

Critic reviews

"Crackling with good deeds, fine characters and sparkling set pieces, it confirms yet again Cornwell's reputation for masterly historical novels" (Daily Mail)

"It is all spectacular, rattling good stuff: war and torture; love, lust and loss" (The Times)

"The battle scenes, as always, are masterful; and the vignettes of everyday living, in times of extreme hardship, have the ring of simple truth" (Sunday Telegraph)

Heretic

Enjoyed this title very much .
perhaps needs to be read as the third book in the trilogy to make sense although it can be read as a standalone title.

Excellent

Loved it. great performance although, French accents would have been better for the French characters. Excellent conclusion to the grail quest and an superb hero in Thomas of Hookton. Loved the entire series.

the last book of the series.

very sorry this series has finished enjoyed every minuet of the 3 books
just one gripe the narrators BRUMMI accent in this last book for one of corriadoors as one myself it hurt my ears thats why he only got 4 stars instead of 5 I would recommend this series to anyone who loves Cornwell and books relating to this savage time. Thank you Bernard Cornwell you are the master.

A good ending

A good ending to the trilogy, made up fir the poor second book. Again showing although fictional the squalor of the middle ages and the corruption of the Roman Catholic church and the horrors of the inquisition.

Exciting end to a stirring series

The superstition and religious fervour of the middle ages are captured brilliantly. The brutality, callousness and violence are apalling. Superb narration.

Great on all counts

Really engaging writing and story. I thought the second book dragged a bit in the middle but this was great all the way through. Narrator brings the characters to life.

Absolutely brilliant

I loved the narration. I already loved the story but it was brought to life so vividly.
